May 18th 2012

It's your weekend to get planting. The greenhouse is full of colour just waiting for you. Come and browse through the greenhouses and see and buy all the plants at their finest.

Smiths Falls Trade ShowThanks to all the visitors to the Smiths Falls Home Show last weekend. We're sorry we couldn't meet all of you there but hope that our display enticed you to come to the garden centre to see more. Congratulations to the recipients of the $25 gift cards. They were Angela Gibeault, Linda Bartlett, and Brenda Cuppage.

From time to time we get inspiration from the feed back we get from customer's emails that we are decided to occasionally have a section in our emails called "YOUR GARDEN". In this section we will feature comments, garden experiences, plants you love or hate and pictures you may want to share. Help us create a local garden community. We'd love to hear  from you if you have something you'd like to say, please forward it to rob@gemmellsgardencentre.com and we'll share it.

NEW

MYKE

If you haven't heard of this new organic soil additive then  you should read this.

Myke products contain mykoryzzia a naturally ocuring fungus that lives in healthy soil and helps all plants grow more of the fibourous hair roots. Healthy strong root development means the plants can better absorb water and more importantly nutrients from the soil.

After one season plants with Myke used in the soil at planting time have shown a % stronger root system than ones without.

Digging and turning soil in your garden kills all the exisitng mykorrizza , MYKE is a natural way of adding it back. Most farmers today practice no cultivate farming because soil science has disocvered that this mychorriza is essential to healthy soil

What does this mean for you?

If you buy trees or shrubs from Gemmells and purchase Mylke we will extend your plants warrantly from 1 year to 5 years. If you buy Myke for your veggie garden you will have stronger plants with higher yields without adding synthetic fertilzers. If you buy perennials and use Myke, your plants will get established faster and grow stronger.

COOL PLANT

FRANGI PANI  Just arrived!

For those of you who have been to Hawaii will know this plant as soon as you see the flower. It's the flower they use to make leis.

Believe it or not we have a couple of plants here. Here's a little bit of cultural information about them.

They have big clusters of fragrant flowers that grow like bouquets on branch tips from early summer through fall.

Frangipani flowers are each made up of 5 overlapping petals. The waxy blooms are about 2 in (5 cm) wide and are available in many shades of pink, red, yellow or white -- or any combination.

Thick, woody branches carry pointed leaves that grow up to 1 ft (30 cm) long.

This Central American native prefers bright light and moderate humidity. If you can give plumeria care what it needs, you'll enjoy this spectacular tropical plant in your home for many years.

Let the sun shine in. Plants that don't bloom aren't getting enough sun. Growing plumeria require at least 5 hours of direct sun each day.

Give it a winter rest. Frangipani tree will go dormant in the winter months, shedding its leaves and requiring a cool rest. Put it in a cool room -- a basement or garage is ideal as long as the temperature doesn't drop below 55°F/13°C. Water sparingly and stop fertilizing until new growth begins in spring.

YOUR GARDEN

This is one of the many wonderful emails we often recieve from customers here at Gemmell's which makes all the hard work, tired bodies and sore feet worth it.

To the staff and owners of Gemmells Garden Centre...

 Good morning,

I'm sure lots of folks go to your store, buy their wares and aren't aware of how much work you do, or what goes into building a garden centre like yours, but if you have a newsletter and have room for the occasional "letter to the editor", I'd like to tell folks something.....

If you feel a bit disconnected from the world and are out of sorts, go browse the greenhouses and aisles at Gemmells and I promise you'll feel a bit better afterwards!

For me, summer begins with a trip to your garden centre to smell the scents of nature hard at work, to take in the visual buffet of colour and the many shades of green, the unique garden accents, decorative elements, the open spaces and diffused light of the greenhouse canopies, the beautiful plant pots and all the other cool stuff you have tucked into the nooks and crannies of the centre.

Your staff is top-notch. They're crazy busy but still manage to find the time to answer questions and offer advice if someone has a few minutes to wait until the folks at the cash are taken care of first. Your garden centre is an oasis of natural beauty in a world of fast paced, drive-through experiences.

I never caught her name, but I am very grateful to the warm and funny lady who helped me to figure out my Anthurium problem this past Sunday - and my flowering cactus problem - I'm sure she'll remember the interaction. Thank you for taking the time to help me and more than this, thanks for saying to me, "...of course I have time for you - you're a customer!" I haven't heard genuine customer service like that in quite a while and it was a pleasure to hear it spoken by someone who actually meant the words.

So to all of you at Gemmells who work so hard, who take the time to help us newby gardeners to figure out that our papyrus won't in fact, grow in the dry hayfield by the back fence and for answering all those other insane questions we come to you with.......THANK YOU!! Thank you for taking the time and for offering such quality and genuinely warm customer service! You always kick off my summer with a great experience year after year.

Warmest regards,
