FIVE GREAT THINGS TO PLANT THIS FALL
Fall is such a nice time in the garden. No humidity or bugs to drive you out! It's a great time to take stock of your garden and make any changes. Whether you are moving plants around or planting something new, a sunny, crisp fall day is a gardeners paradise. Here are a few things that are great to plant in the Fall.
BULBS
Plant now for lovely spring colour to greet you after the long cold winter. If you have squirrel problems consider sticking to alliums, and daffodils or intermix tulips and daffodils. I love the species tulips and the sweet little narcissus for naturalizing.
GARLIC
Grow your own this season, it's easy! There is nothing like fresh garlic, it's sticky on your fingers when you peel it, not like the grocery store varieties from China. Once you cook with fresh garlic it's hard to go back. Make sure you plant a hard neck variety which is hardiest in our climate. This season we have one of the most popular hard neck varieties 'MUSIC'. Come soon as it sells out fast!
BURNING BUSH
This beautiful shrub plays it cool all season in your garden until fall when it burst into fall with it's fiery red colour. A hardy favourite, this shrub is a must have in every garden. It grows approximately 5 ft in height and width and loves full sun.
EVERGREENS
Very often the forgotten soldiers in the garden, evergreens give something back all year round. They tend to fade into the background during the summer months when the flowering shrubs steal the limelight but come Fall, Winter and early Spring when the rest of the garden seems naked, evergreens provide excellent texture and colour. Fall is a great time to plant evergreens as there's more moisture and the temperatures are cooler. My new favourite is Cypress 'Soft Serve' from Proven Winners.
GRASSES
Ornamental grasses exploded into popularity with perennial gardeners in the past few years. Hardy and drought tolerant they make a great show in the fall and winter months.
Our favourites at the garden centre;
Little Bluestem Schizachyrium scoparium 'Prairie Blues'
