July 6th 2011

Greetings!

Summer has arrived! It has been a hot week, I hope you haven't lost any plants. During these blasts of heat you should be watering your hanging baskets in the morning and at night. To ensure baskets and planters continue to be beautiful and luscious it is crucial to fertilize them with a water soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer every week. There is just not enough in the soil to sustain them all summer long and they begin to yellow and look weak. Please make sure you buy a good well balanced fertilizer that has micronutrients in it.

The plants in the greenhouse are loving this heat. Everything still looks great!

See you soon!

WATERING
This time of year I see alot of homeowners out spraying their lawns with a hose during the heat of the day. This is the absolute worse thing you could do for your lawn. Watering needs to be done early in the morning or late at night with a sprinkler. Light spraying causes shallow roots whereas deep watering promotes nice deep root systems that can tolerate drought better throughout the summer. Watering during the heat of the day can also burn the grass. Lawns that need watering first turn a bluish hue then white before going completely off.
So  watch your lawn during these extended periods of heat for stress. If you have to reseed use a mix with lots of fescue which is far more drought tolerant and grub resistant.  Good Luck!

HYDRANGEAS                                                                    by Kelly Heath, Retail Manager

It's Hydrangea Time! With so many fabulous varieties available hydrangeas are a must in every garden big or small. Hydrangeas do best in part sun and love constant moisture so don't plant them in a hot dry area. Morning sun and late afternoon sun are the best light conditions for hydrangeas. Fertilize monthly for the biggest and best blooms.
