Greetings!
As you can well imagine, things are abuzz here at Gemmell's this time of year. We're planting, seeding, and setting up all the funky new things for 2011. Every year we seem to take on a new project to make Gemmell's bigger and better! This season one of our several new projects is that we are relocating and expanding our pond area. Many customers in the past have commented that it's hard to source pond plants and products and that they'd love to have more choices locally. We listened! Drop by this spring to see all things water related, there's some really interesting new options for those who covet a pond but don't have the space or time to build one but I'll save the details for a future newsletter. In the meantime, THINK SPRING!

NEW FOR 2011
astilbe colour flash

Astilbe Colour Flash

After reading about this interesting Astilbe variety in a gardening magazine we decided to grow it ourselves. This astilbe produces spears of pretty pale pink flowers that extend 8" above the foliage. The leaves start out brilliant green in spring and then change to purple-burgundy as the season progresses. A true chameleon for the garden.
Grows 10" H ( flowers to 18") Zone 3 in light to moderate shade.
HORTICULTURAL THERAPY
hibiscus yellowWe've just loaded up on some gorgeous fresh tropicals. For the colour starved we have brilliant Hibiscus in red, orange, and yellow, fragrant Gardenias, and Ice Pink Oleanders (some yellow too!). There are very
funky Bromeliads as well as fresh luscious foliage plants. So if you are looking to bring a little life back in your home after a dreary winter or simply have a touch of spring fever. Drop in and have a wander around!

FABULOUS FRUIT TREES                                                                     by Kelly Heath, Retail Manager

Kelly head web
If your fruit trees are producing more disease than fruit then you should read on because one early spring day spent outside caring for your trees will greatly help you reap the rewards come summer time.

The next couple of weeks is the best time for applying a Dormant Oil
Spray Kit on your fruit trees. In today's eco sensitive world it is a great choice for reducing pests and disease by up to 50%!

Dormant Oil KitWhat is Dormant Oil you may ask? It is a mixture of Horticultural Oil and Lime Sulphur. Mixed together its a one-two punch to help your fruit trees. It truly is considered one of the best organic defenses against diseases because the spray smothers over wintering spores, fungus and pests.  Dormant Spray can damage leaves and needles on trees and shrubs. It is important to spray your fruit trees when they are dormant, before the buds have begun to open (bud-break) in early spring. The spray can also damage surrounding evergreens and perennials, so it's advisable to cover any susceptible plants in the over-spray zone with a tarp. It's also crucial to choose a clear dry day, with no breeze and  above freezing temperatures. Before you begin spraying be sure to assess your trees for any dead, crossing or broken branches for now is an excellent time to prune.

For more information on Dormant Oil feel free to drop in and talk to one of us here at the garden centre. P.S. don't forget to bring us one of your wonderful apples in the summer :)

Happy Gardening!
