| Greetings! |
Our beloved cat, friend and co worker Nicky was laid to rest after a brief illness this past week. There were many tears shed from the employees here at Gemmell's as Nicky has been an integral part of our team for the last 10 years. Our official greeter to the garden centre from his post under the rocking chair,
 Nicky was a
customer favourite. He was also the first editor of the Gemmell's Newsletter. Nicky was a lovable lazy soul who could often be found splayed across the retail desk or sleeping amongst the plants. Renowned for his hard work ethic, he oversaw countless plantings of perennial cuttings every fall from his homemade bed that Julia always fashioned for him out a plant tray. He was also often seen attending many of our workshops wandering between the customers trying to garner all the attention from Liz that he could! Our ambassador to Gemmell's will be greatly missed!

WHAT'S NEW |
How has your summer been? Hot enough? Although we've been sweating off a few pounds here in the greenhouse, we welcome the hot weather as it makes for gorgeous displays of flowers (if you can keep them watered). I have mentioned before the great new watering systems that we brought in this season. Well we had our first success story last week. The Norton's explained to me that they went away for a holiday and had their containers set up on this system which they had purchased from here and were thrilled with the results. Mr. Norton had run it off a rain barrel that was completely empty when they returned and all the plants were happy & healthy. So if you are tired of replacing your hanging baskets & containers every season drop in to check out this new watering system that will last you for years. If you did manage to lose your baskets in that heat wave then never fear we have just restocked the greenhouse with fresh baskets and are offering a 2 for 1 sale. There are also lots of fresh summer annuals to spruce up your containers or gardens. 4" annuals are now 50% off! Building a new garden? I have a fresh shipment of shrubs that have just arrived in the nursery this week. What's new? Wine & Roses Weigela, Rosy Glow Barberry, Dappled Willows ( get them now as these babies sell out fast!) Purple Smoketree, and Sungold Cypress just to mention a few. Everything is 30% off

TIRED OF WATERING YET? |
We have 2 new innovative products for keeping your hanging baskets and containers watered when you are away. Excellent choice for cottagers!
Basket Booster
Simple design that waters according to the basket weight. Water is fed through a valve that releases drops of water based on the transpiration rate of the plant. The tiny hose has a connection to the faucet end. As the plant begins to dry, the water lost is replaced. There are no pressure regulators, timers etc. It maintains perfect moisture levels for weeks. The bonus? It uses 70% less water than regular hand watering.

Proven Winners
Click here to watch a quick video Leave it to this innovative company to design the Water Wise Watering Kit. An easy-to-use, self-contained kit makes it simple to water container plants, hanging baskets, flower boxes, and landscape beds automatically. In fact, you can water up to ten containers or 30 feet of landscape beds from a single faucet. And, if your garden is larger than that, additional kits can be easily attached to water even more plants from the same faucet. Just set it and forget it. It's simple to use and cheaper than installing irrigation systems. WaterWise isn't like other drip systems where you have to purchase tubing, emitters, clamps, etc. and try to match up the individual parts on your own. Everything you need is in one kit, and the step-by-step instructions make set-up simple.

| PLANT OF THE WEEK | |
Okay we couldn't choose just one this week!
Butterfly Bush Buddlei davidii
True to its name this beautiful plant attracts tons of butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. It flowers non stop throughout August. Beautiful 2 gallon plants are standing 3-4 feet high in our perennial section in gorgeous shades of pink, white or deep purple.
Grows 5' but need to be cut back every spring Full Sun

Rose of Sharon Hibiscus syriacus
A true gardener's delight these shrubs from the hibiscus family are real show offs in your yard. Covered in blossoms in late summer they add punch to the late summer garden. This season we carry 'Blue Satin' a stunning light blue with a burgundy eye, a lovely double fuschia pink called ' Lucy', and 'Red Heart' a true white with a red centre. They border on hardiness but many customers here at Gemmell's have great success with them.
If you are a garden fanatic then they are definitely worth a try! Grows 5'-6' Full Sun
Perennial Hibiscus Hibiscus moscheutos 'Luna Series'
I know we seem to be on a bit of a hibiscus thing but these flowers are outstanding! Enormous sized blooms in deep red, white or pink swirl. These are truly monsters in bloom size and absolutely nothing else compares.
