Hi

Ok this is the weather we've been waiting for. WOW! A little hot for some but it's easier to get motivated to plant with weather like this than with frost warnings, let's hope the rain on Sunday that's forecasted comes overnight to water in all the great gardens you're starting.

I took a look through the back greenhouses today and was quite impressed with the plants. It's always nice to see the greenhouses full and in so much colour but at the same time it's great to see the greenhouses when their empty too! At the rate plants are moving out of them they're sure to clear out.

Magnolia Yellow Bird frost damageIf you've been out in your garden this week you're probably noticing some weird shaped or dried and burnt leaves. Yes in fact the frost can and did damage lots of established perennials, shrubs and trees. In my own garden, my awesome Yellow Bird Magnolia that I've written about even got Hosta Frost Damagetouched. The growing tips of the leaves and the remaining blooms are outlined in brown. The hostas, plume poppies and even a maple tree are going to need more time to look their best. In most cases things will rebound because they have established roots that aren't damaged.

This week we have the coneflower or Echinacea 'Tomato Soup' on sale! (see picture down and to the left). Last year we introduced this Terra Nova variety to you and we sold out in no time. This year we are better prepared and have more. Tomato Soup Rob'sThis picture is the one that I have in my garden. I planted it in late spring and enjoyed 2 blooms that year. It came through the winter just great. This year I'm looking forward to seeing lots more of the red blooms again.

Thank
you
Take care & see you this weekend!

Get Dirty This Weekend!

It's Victoria Day weekend a gardener's favourite time of year! Veggies, annuals, hanging baskets, perennials shrubs, a shade tree, what to plant first? It's hard to know where to start. Well we aren't making it any easier for you here at Gemmell's.  We have continued the colour blocking of the greenhouse with a funky new addition of painted windows Victorian Red and Windowto indicate the row colours. Liz's new Victorian Hanging Baskets and Planters are flying out the door. People love all the new garden art and pots.  There are so many cool new plants, the greenhouse is bursting with colour and the nursery has been stocked up! This week I thought I would mention some of the new and exciting things at the garden centre:

Annuals

As always, we continue to grow some of the more unusual and unique annuals as well as the tried and true favourites. Always top quality, always grown right here! If you want your garden to stand apart from the rest take some time to browse through the greenhouse for some of the latest introductions.

Container Ready

Container Ready 1Container Ready 2This year, Rob designed a new 'container ready program' that are in 1 gallon, 2 gallon and 3 gallon sizes. Great combinations for your patio that you just pop in a container and presto instant WOW! You don't even have to get your hands dirty.

Euro Pot VeggiesHerb Vic HB

Vegetable gardening continues to rise in popularity among gardeners across the country. This year we have grown herbs and veggies in Euros (1 gallon pots) these bigger sizes are great for containers on your deck. There is lettuce, mesclun mix, cucumbers, peas, basil.

Also new this season; luscious herb planters and hanging baskets for the gardeners who love to cook!

Colour Blocking

Last season we organized the annuals in rows by colour since most gardeners choose plants based on colour preference. You told us you loved it! It makes for easy planter combinations and accents to match any home. So this year we've done the same with perennials. The colours are identified with a painted board above them and so far customers have enjoyed browsing through looking for that perfect plant. Let us know what you think?

Planting

We now offer a planting service in the nursery. All trees are planted properly with amended soil, transplanter fertilizer, mulch, and staked.

Best of all? We'll extend our guarantee to 2 years! Drop into the nursery to ask about this new service.

Glass Greenhouse

As many of you may have noticed there is an amazing old glass greenhouse on the north side of our property that had been out of commission for several years. This season we've brought it back to life. It now houses a lot of our garden art and accents perfect for any garden. Lots of interesting new pots as well as garden flags, bamboo fencing, funky metal geckos and the hot ticket item of the season; gorgeous glass bird baths that I can't keep in stock.
