Dear
It seems ironic that just when we write about water and its importance to the garden we get a big dump of rain. Nevertheless read on to find out how important it is. As for rain I like it when it doesn't happen on the weekends. The fall is such a nice time to enjoy your garden and the fall colours. My family and I will be checking the colours out this weekend with another last camping trip. Let's hope the rain holds off.
Take care and have a terrific weekend.

FALLING FOR WATER |
|
Autumn is a second spring, when all the leaves are flowers. -Camus FALLING FOR WATER!!! I just cannot stress enough the importance of watering your trees, shrubs and especially evergreens in the Fall. Those of you who have heard me ramble on about this when purchasing your shrubs & trees this season may skip the next bit of information but many of you who haven't should please read on!! Plants need moisture to help them survive the winter. Now that our thoughts have turned to all things autumn; back to school, apple picking, the changing colours, we all but forget the gardens that had preoccupied our minds and hearts for the last 3 months. With the cooler temperatures, we often assume that plants have gone dormant but the winter damage that trees and shrubs sustain stems from their inability to draw water from the frozen earth. Winter can resemble desert like conditions (no I'm not crazy), strong winds with no windbreak can make plants very susceptible to winter burn and deep watering greatly minimizes their chances of injury. The most important time to water is in late autumn, just before freeze up. All evergreens, deciduous trees and shrubs should be given a deep watering before packing in the hose for the season. The idea is to have the stems and branches full of water before freeze up, so don't let your garden go thirsty at this important time of the year.

JAZZ UP THE FALL GARDEN |
|
Want to extend the garden season? Revive your garden with a riot of colour this Fall. Take a look at this gorgeous garden and how successfully they used our fall mums to create a definite WOW factor!
Mums are the official favourite flower of the Fall and have taken the gardening world by storm. Here at Gemmell's we can't seem to keep the greenhouse filled this season but that's no surprise since these gorgeous plants literally sell themselves. Blooming right until the harshest frost, they are floriferous to a fault, outperforming many late blooming perennials and come in a rainbow of colours. Why not jazz up your garden this Fall?

BEHIND THE SCENES |
|
Just an update as to what is going on behind the scenes at Gemmell's. We have just started seeds and cuttings for next year's perennials and though I can't reveal any secrets yet there are some good things to come. We start our perennials in autumn so by having a winter under their belt they bloom the first season for our customers. A team of people continue to work hard at putting together our 2010 Wholesale Catalogue which determines what you'll be seeing on the benches here at Gemmell's next season. Many of you may not realize that Gemmell's is also a wholesale grower with 22 greenhouses. We deliver fresh locally grown plants throughout Ontario. |

SPRING BULBS |
|
Now is the time to plant bulbs for tons of colour next spring! Daffodils, and Garlic absolutely should be planted in September. Tulips, Hyacinth, Muscari, Alliums and Snowdrops can be planted until late fall. We have some really interesting varieties this year. My new fav is the 'Blumex' tulip, but the El Nino is a close second! To keep those pesky squirrels at bay try adding bloodmeal to your bulbs when planting. Other gardener tricks are: hen manure, dog hair, or mothballs. Squirrels usually stay away from Daffodils and Narcissus. |
