MEMBERSHIP REWARD

September 3, 2009

(Membership Reward sales run Wednesdays to the following Thursdays each week)

Dear

As I am sure, many of you have had a busy week getting ready for back to school or maybe the last holiday trip for the summer. Whatever it may be I hope you enjoy the fantastic weather.

So next week when the dust settles you'll have to come out and pick up some of the fall mums to decorate with this fall. They are some of the best we've grown. I'm sure you'll love them as much as the customers have that have purchased some already. Hey and best of all they are grown right here and not shipped in from other areas. At only $4 each when you buy 5 or more they're a great deal and will do a great job decorating.

By the way, we will be open on Monday from 10:00am until 4:00pm.

Oh and one more thing; present your MEMBER REWARD CARD at the cash and save an additional 10% on Nursery Stock during the month of September. If you don't have a Member Reward Card, just ask at the cash.

Take care and have a terrific weekend.

ALLTHE DIRT

THE GRASS IS NOT ALWAYS GREENER

In fact sometimes the most interesting grasses come in many shades other than green!
These are a great way to jazz up you planters in late summer, fill in that empty spot and add some textural interest and begin to move your planter's look into the next season.
Here are some different varieties available here at the garden centre:

Toffe Twist 2CAREX 'Toffee Twist' interesting mop top sedge grass in a brownish rust colour that looks excellent in mixed containers or makes a bold statement all on its own.

MilletORNAMENTAL MILLET this unique foliage plant changes from chartreuse to burgundy as it matures creating a multicoloured effect. Burgundy flower spikes add interest in fall. Striking in large containers at the centre of a mixed planter. Looks great with fall mums.

Grey Haired GrassGREY HAIR GRASS has attractive tufts of blue-grey grass that is an excellent filler at the edge of containers. Tolerates drought and is a wonderful contrast to burgundy.

Purple Fountain GrassPENNISETUM 'Red Riding Hood' upright arching, rich burgundy fountain grass does wonders for any container garden. Attractive pinkish plumes in late summer. Great fall thriller!

Ponytails GrassFEATHER GRASS 'Ponytails'  Graceful wispy foliage adds a soft touch to containers. Light green turning brown in fall adds motion to plantings.

The great thing about any of these grasses is not only their effectiveness as fillers but their longevity; they last right into the fall. Once the rest of your containers start to fade you can add sedums, fall mums, and asters for a total fall look!

It's a great time to plant especially with the Home Tax Credit offered by the government this year; be sure to keep all your receipts!
FALL NEMATODES

Just a quick reminder that we are currently taking orders for fall nematodes. Those of you not familiar with nematodes, they are a natural predator to grubs and are an eco-friendly choice for pest control in your lawn, especially now with the pesticide ban in Ontario. Grubs have a spring/fall life cycle. Fall applications provide a very high kill rate as the grubs are usually smaller and closer to the surface. We order these on a customer request basis only, so be sure to call and get your name on the list if you are looking to apply them this September.

ECO SEED
September is also a great time to overseed your lawn.  We carry a full line of grass seed choices here at Gemmell's for full sun to shade. Our newest introduction is Eco Lawn which is mainly a fescue based mix. It is very drought tolerant and grub resistant because fescue is a deeper rooted grass so it can withstand more stress than the bluegrass varieties. For those of you in love with a golf course lawn then our Estate Mix is a great choice with 60% bluegrass.
FALL FERTILIZER

Feeding your lawn is an important aspect of keeping it strong and healthy and therefore less susceptible to weeds and pests. Apply fall fertilizer in September to help feed the roots and strengthen the grass as it enters its winter dormancy period. For those of you that have used our 3 step feeding program from Fafard, the third step is available now to apply any time in September. If you haven't fed your lawn all season then you may want to consider doing it now, as well as overseeding, for better results in spring.
LILY BEETLES

Many of our gardeners have been in this summer with woes of the dreaded Lily Leaf Beetles. These pests can defoliate a lily in a matter of hours. For those lily lovers out there they are a real pain in the ......garden!
Dealing with these pests is not as simple as spraying them with insecticidal soap, nothing seems to kill these guys except one of 2 methods.

1. Squish every single one of them by hand (I know, I know...yuck!) It is truly labour intensive but it works!

2. Neem Oil. which is a natural product derived from the Neem Tree, is another effective method of attack. Here at Gemmell's we have found that only the Neem Oil Concentrate is effective in controlling Lily Beetles. Mixed at a rate of 30ml (the instructions say 10ml) to 1 litre of water with 2 drops of dish soap as an emulsifier is the recommended rate. Be sure to coat the undersides of the leaves in order to kill all eggs and larvae and repeat every 3 weeks. Note: this method is most effective on the egg and larvae stages so be proactive and check your lilies weekly.

There is an excellent garden link from Phil Reilly at Reilly's Country Gardens that is very in-depth and informative about the Lily Leaf Beetle if you are interested in reading more. We were first given this website by one of our customers here at Gemmell's (thank you!)
