Dear
I can't believe the amount of rain. Two weeks ago I hoped that we were not headed for another soggy summer, well it looks like it's here. It sure helps the gardens grow. I know there are issues when things are too wet but it's better than being too dry. For those of you who have broadleaf evergreens; did you know that if they are given plenty of water in the summer that they will have a better chance at retaining all their leaves in the winter? A wet fall alone will not be enough for them to soak up and store enough water. Make sure you make it out to get another Luna Hibiscus. These are a favourite in everyone's gardens as they have such huge blooms. Sometimes they are called dinner plate hibiscus. The blooms are literally that big. If you find a nice gardening day, stop out and see some great sales that are now on. Perennials are now on at 30% (Luna Hibiscus excluded) as is the Nursery. And Hanging Baskets are now buy 1 get 2nd 50% off. Fill in those holes and take advantage of these reduced prices.
Have a terrific day and thank you again!

Greeting Gemmell's Gardeners! How is your summer going so far? We've had mixed reports here at the garden centre about how people are feeling about the cooler weather but you cannot deny that it's the PERFECT weather to get out and work in your gardens. We've had unprecedented amounts of perennials and shrubs flying out the doors and people are still adding annuals plantings and hanging baskets to their yards. Send me an email, I'd love to hear what you think! HOLIDAY HELP! Many of you are probably planning on doing some vacationing this summer whether it be for just a few days or longer but what do you do with those gorgeous planters and hanging baskets that I know you've all been religiously feeding and caring for? SOIL MOIST These amazing little water gel crystals are a gardener's best friend. They are described as a 'delivery system' used to release water into all types of potting soil. They absorb water similar to a sponge and as the surrounding soil dries, the water is released to the soil. The best way to get these into the soil of already planted baskets is to poke several holes into the soil with a pencil and pour the beads in. WATER SPIKES This ingenious invention we just brought in this season saves time and helps maintain consistent moisture in your plants with simply its 'flow control device' and an empty water bottle. Simply fill and empty water bottle with water and screw the plastic flow control device to the end. Insert the tapered end into the soil of your planters or hanging baskets so the bottle is now upside down. Adjust the control to best suit your planter or hanging basket needs and voila! The great thing about this crafty little invention is you can also add water soluble fertilizer to slowly feed your plants at the same time. SHADE This can be the best friend when going away for a few days. Simply moving your planters or baskets into a partly shaded area of your property reduces the amount and the frequency of watering. HEAVENLY HIBISCUS!
Julia has just brought into the Perennial area some gorgeous Hibiscus fresh from our greenhouses. These beauties are huge in 2 gallon pots and worth every penny. Available in four colours 'Pink Swirl' 'Blush' 'Red' and 'White' she recommends planting them now to enjoy their gorgeous giant dinner plate sized blooms in mid - late August. They are heat tolerant and drought tolerant (once established) and grow to 24"-36" tall in full sun. Make a dramatic statement in your garden while attracting butterflies and hummingbirds! Our shrub, tree, evergreen and perennials sale continues this week with EVERYTHING 30% off (Luna Hibiscus excluded). We have a great selection - these are not the dregs!
It's a great time to plant especially with the Home Tax Credit offered by the government this year, be sure to keep all your receipts! |

SUMMER FESTIVAL OF COLOUR |
|
|
As many of our Gemmell's gardeners may or may not know we do a second seeding of annuals for our summer program. We started this program after so many requests mid summer for flowers for weddings and parties, from people who just wanted to jazz up their planters or fill empty holes in their garden, and from our many garden addicts (you know who you are!) who just can't get enough! These annuals are in bigger 5 ½" terra cotta pots and are fresh from our own greenhouses (another chance to shop local!) not the tired leftovers you see at other places. We also bring in fresh crops of hanging baskets and planters. If you get a chance, drop in for a wander about the greenhouse, it is a truly glorious sight right through July and August.
