Dear
I hope everyone had a great Canada Day. The weather was great. I can't believe that the weather forecasters had that one pegged so wrong. As Kelly mentions below the summer months at the garden centre look great with all the annuals in full colour and displayed so nicely. It's a great time to come and add a little more colour to the garden and to get ideas for another year. Sometimes in the spring the plants are just too small to see what their potential could be, and many of the neat varieties get missed. So come and check things out, you'll never know what you're going to see, like Steve Colwil did while his wife checked out the plants. This fellow was sitting on a Water Hyacinth in one of the ponds at the garden centre.

Have a terrific day and thank you again!

A LITTLE BIT OF THIS AND THAT LIZ'S PICK OF THE WEEK! Oh for OKRA This season we grew a new vegetable to us called Okra. It loves the heat so these plants just in from the greenhouse are absolutely luscious. Okra is an amazing versatile, healthy food. It can be eaten raw or cooked in salads, stews or in a stir fry. Very easy to grow, it contains a powerful compound called glutathione that shows promise for fighting cancer and heart disease. Rich in Vitamin C, calcium and potassium, it is also very low in calories. Why not try something new this season? MULCH Now is the time to mulch if you haven't already done so. Mulch is a key ingredient to a successful summer garden. It manages to both reduce weeding and retain moisture in your garden, it works like your own personal gardener without the weekly fees! There are many varieties and colours available, some are more decorative while others are more natural looking; red, black, brown and natural cedar mulch (which smells great too!), pine bark mulch, pine bark chips and cocoa mulch are a few we carry here at the garden centre. If you are looking for a bit more time by the pool or on the deck this summer then you may want to consider mulch. All mulches are 20% off this week only! BUGS We have had an influx of gardeners into the garden centre this past week with bug issues. The humid weather of last week must have brought them on. Since the Pesticide Ban was passed this past April there are not as many choices available to gardeners. The key players now in insect control which are eco-friendly are Insecticidal Soap (used for most common pests) and BTK (used mostly for caterpillars and worm like insects) both of which we carry here. There is also a new multipurpose 3 in 1 Spray by Safer's that is an insecticide, fungicide and miticide. We have also found that the best way to treat orange lily beetles is through using Neem Oil but only in the concentrate. All powdery mildews, black spot and rust are now treated with Garden Sulphur or Copper Bordo. Good Luck!!!
P.S. Just a reminder, if you are bringing any diseased or bug infested samples into the garden centre for an opinion to please place them in a sealed plastic bag. Thank You!

SUMMER FESTIVAL OF COLOUR |
|
|
As many of our Gemmell's gardeners may or may not know we do a second seeding of annuals for our summer program. We started this program after so many requests mid summer for flowers for weddings and parties, from people who just wanted to jazz up their planters or fill empty holes in their garden, and from our many garden addicts (you know who you are!) who just can't get enough! These annuals are in bigger 5 ½" terra cotta pots and are fresh from our own greenhouses (another chance to shop local!) not the tired leftovers you see at other places. We also bring in fresh crops of hanging baskets and planters. If you get a chance, drop in for a wander about the greenhouse, it is a truly glorious sight right through July and August.
