May 13th, 2009

Dear

It wasn't nice to get a couple mornings of frost earlier this week. Hopefully everyone is being smart by buying early but not planting out just yet. Remember the 24th of May has always been the rule of thumb. Many experienced gardeners will even wait to put them in later than that, but the best selections are found now.

Nematode PackageWith the ground temperature warm now and some rain in the forcast it couldn't be a better time to apply the nematodes, they are now in. Get them on now to prevent more dead grass in the growing season.

We need your input. I have 5 quick questions for you....

Enjoy!

Take care, and have a terrific day!

ALLTHE DIRT
WHY NOT GET DIRTY THIS WEEKEND?

Well gardening fever has hit the greenhouse in full force this week! Happy gardeners are filling their carts with all the newest gorgeous custom designed Victorian Baskets, annuals and perennials. This week we thought we'd talk a bit about annuals, designing with them, care of them and of course....... some of our favourites!

Designing with annuals
Annuals are an integral part of any garden. Most often they are used in hanging baskets and planters as accents to yards, patios and front entrances.  But tucked into those small bare spots in your garden they can give a colour boost to any space. Cosmos, Cleome, or Victoria Salvia planted within an existing perennial garden can add summer long colour while still keeping within the design elements of an English Garden. Impatiens, especially white, tucked along the edge of a shade garden help give a little life to the various shades of green, and are a perfect accent to variegated hostas. When choosing plants, consider the effectiveness of colour blocking by buying in 3's and 5's, all plants show better when planted in groups of similar colours.

Containers
Don't be shy when choosing plants for your container plantings. There are so many new and interesting varieties available. Dare to be different! Texture is a big consideration this season, with more and more gardeners incorporating grasses, fillers and coloured leaves in their containers for interest.
Some of our new favourites are;

Carex a Carex Toffee Twistbrownish/burgundy soft grass which is very modern looking, we saw a lot of this displayed at the horticultural shows this past winter.

Hakonechloa Hakonechloa a beautiful chartreuse coloured grass that grows well in shade,

IresineIresine  an amazing filler with deep red variegated leaves is a stylish accent for brightly coloured flowers.

Brugmansia
Brugmansiaa tender perennial with variegated foliage. This is an excellent container plant, looks great with white annuals.

Diamond Frost EuphorbiaDiamond Frost Euphorbia, small white flowers look like they are dancing on air with this fabulous trailing annual. This was a hit last year, we sold out of it before May was over.

Hawaiian Blue Eyes Hawaiian Blue Eyes covered in dainty blue flowers, this sun loving annual is just new this season. Excellent trailer.

Persian Shield Persian Shield dramatic deep purple variegated upright annual that is a new intro for shade planters.

 Coleus Blaze Dark Star
Coleus Blaze Dark Star dark purple (almost black) foliage makes this annual stand out from other coleus. Wonderful contrast plant.

I obviously could go on and on about all the fabulous new annuals but why not come out and browse for yourself?

Colour
Choose a colour theme for your pots, hangers, window boxes, then choose varying shades along that tone or choose a colour and then add in a contrasting colour for effect. For example lilac impatiens look beautiful planted with bright orange begonias. Don't forget...the aisles are organized by colour this year which makes it easier to choose complementary plants.

Care
Annuals are heavy feeders. To keep the blooms coming all season long it is imperative to fertilize. Here at Gemmell's, we recommend a slow release granular fertilizer which fertilizes gently every time you water as well as using an all-purpose water soluble fertilizer once weekly or biweekly. Some varieties of annuals get 'leggy' as the summer progresses, don't be afraid to give them a haircut mid season to promote more top growth and generate more flowering.
As always, we have lots of educated staff on hand to help you with any questions or assist in choosing plants. Feel free to bring your pots in and we can help you plant them up at our potting bench!
