DESIGNING YOUR GARDEN In spring, many of us gardeners start off the season with a huge wish list. Whether it's constructing new garden beds, adding the latest and greatest shrubs & perennials or building a new walkway. You don't have to be a trained landscape architect to build a well designed garden but when building new gardens there are some definite design elements that everyone should consider. 1. First choose a general style that reflects your personal taste. Whether it be informal, or formal, low maintenance or high maintenance, think of gardening like decorating but for the outside. Choose a colour palate that not only appeals to your sense of taste but also complements the architecture and colour of your home. All our annuals this season at Gemmell's are organized in the greenhouse by colour so choosing plants for your containers, hanging baskets couldn't be easier! 2. Put the time and thought into patios, walkways and decks as these elements are a bigger investment and once built are more difficult to change. Build it big enough and wide enough the first time! Upgraded walkways are an easy way to make a property more inviting. 3. The first planting choices for a new garden should be trees and shrubs, these are the 'bones' of your garden. They help give structure to the garden throughout the four seasons. Evergreens are an excellent all year round accent plant and should be incorporated into the front entrance garden of every home. Then shrubs with different flowering times for summer interest. Don't forget the wide array of shrubs available for fall, in vibrant reds, oranges and yellows. 4. When planting shrubs always read the tags! The full grown size needs to be a priority in choosing shrubs otherwise it is a waste of your time and money to have to remove it in 5 years. Sun and shade is another important element of designing a garden. Take the time to record the amount of light that the area receives. Is it morning or afternoon sun and for how long? 5. Don't plant trees too close to the house, hydro lines or other trees. There is nothing more heartbreaking than to have to cut down a mature tree. Also consider investing in a few mature specimens, not just tiny 1 gallon shrubs and trees. You want a garden to look as if it's been there for a few years. 7. Keep it simple rather than peppering your garden with a myriad of plant specimens. Choose a few focal plants then strategically layer with plantings of a few different varieties. Planting in 3's or odd numbers, is a good rule of thumb (especially with perennials). As always, you are welcome to drop into the garden centre any time and our staff can assist you in choosing the right plants for your garden. It is important to measure your garden space and know the amount of light it gets. Our nursery is fully stocked for spring! This week to celebrate the beginning of a new planting season we are having a 20% off sale on all shrubs and evergreens.

| Planting a Tree |
|
1. Be sure to dig a hole twice as wide and twice as deep as the root ball size.
2. Amend the soil you took out of the hole with Quali-Grow Brand 3 Way Mix or manure, peat and compost. Mix in some granulated bone meal, which will break down slowly and feed the tree later in the season. Use this soil to put back in the hole to bring the level back up so that the tree will not be planted deeper than it is in the pot. It's important NOT to bury the base of the stem.
3. It is generally recommended not to disturb the roots when transplanting. It is best to have the soil depth correct in the hole first, then cut the bottom of the pot off. Set the pot in the hole. Slice the side of the pot in one or two places. Start to pack more of the amended soil in the hole as you slide the remaining pieces of the pot off. This will prevent the root ball from falling apart.
4. Make sure the tree is well watered before planting; continue to let the hose trickle at the base once planted until the area is well saturated. You can use any remaining soil to use arond the base to create a moat or a saucer effect to hold the water in when you do water.
5. Fertilize with Parkwood Transplanter fertilizer 5-15-5 at time of planting. This helps in reducing transplant shock and includes a rooting hormone which helps the tree get established quicker.
6. Stake your tree for the first couple of years until it is stable especially if it is in a windy open location.
7. Continue to water when needed and fertilize yearly with either tree fertilizer stakes, liquid or slow release granular what ever best suits your lifestyle.
