Planting a Tree

April, 22nd, 2009

Dear

Well here comes spring.

You know it's always funny to see people coming to the garden centre over the last few weeks expecting to see the sales areas looking the way they remember them from last year when they were out. The only problem is that they remember them the way they looked in May, not March and April.  Well rest assured that all the plants that will be overfilling the sales areas again this year are growing in one of the 22 greenhouses behind the garden centre, that you don't get to see. Don't worry.

The forecast for this weekend is Sunny and 25, now that's early.

Come and see us this weekend and for sure May 2nd which is our OPEN HOUSE. We will be passing out $20 to each of the first 250 customers that day to use at the garden centre. (A $5.00 loaded Membership Card to the Gemmell's Garden Club and 4 vouchers to pick up free plants through the season.) We hope to see you there.

Take care, and have a terrific day!

Rob Gemmell
We need you to spread the word that we will be recycling all plastic horticultural pots and flats at the garden centre this year. They are types 2, 5 and 6.
They must have soil removed but not necessary washed. The cleaner they are they the more successful the recycling process will be. Styrofoam will not be accepted. Any containers that came from us will be reused and the rest will be returned to the plastic pot manufactures to be recycled and blended into new pots. They must be brought to the garden centre during business hours.

MORE TREES.........PLEASE!

"Today is Earth Day!" Well, what can you do for the Earth you ask?
How about plant a tree?

Did You Know?
-Trees are one of the longest living organisms on earth.
-One large tree can absorb up to 10lbs of air pollutants.
-Shade trees when properly placed can save homeowners 10-50% on cooling bills. Vice versa they act as wind barriers in winter and can result in 10-15% heating savings. This translates directly into a reduction in the amount of greenhouse gases!
-They protect our soil by reducing soil erosion and surface runoff.
-2 large trees produce about 400 lbs of oxygen each year which is the amount an average person consumes in a year.
-Trees provide habitat and food for wildlife.

There are so many more benefits to planting trees that I cannot even begin to list them all here but I think you are beginning to get the point. With so many wonderful varieties of trees to choose from there is one for every gardener's niche.

When choosing a tree it is important to consider the spacing and size, planting trees too close to others and to buildings will only result in it having to be cut down in the future.  If you are going to all the work of choosing, buying, then planting a tree be sure to know what the full grown size will be.
Also, think about what characteristics you want in a tree;
Is it to provide shade?
Do you want it to flower?
Is it an accent/ specimen?
Is it to provide privacy or a screen?

This season at Gemmell's we have brought in a wide selection of trees in various sizes and prices. We have also expanded the choices in smaller sized trees as we find many people are driving smaller more gas efficient cars (very eco). Our delivery service has also been expanded to serve a broader area and includes mulch & soil as well as tress, shrubs & flowers.
It couldn't be an easier time to buy a tree!

Planting a Tree
1. Be sure to dig a hole twice as wide and twice as deep as the root ball size.

2. Amend the soil you took out of the hole with Quali-Grow Brand 3 Way Mix or manure, peat and compost. Mix in some granulated bone meal, which will break down slowly and feed the tree later in the season. Use this soil to put back in the hole to bring the level back up so that the tree will not be planted deeper than it is in the pot. It's important NOT to bury the base of the stem.

3. It is generally recommended not to disturb the roots when transplanting. It is best to have the soil depth correct in the hole first, then cut the bottom of the pot off. Set the pot in the hole. Slice the side of the pot in one or two places. Start to pack more of the amended soil in the hole as you slide the remaining pieces of the pot off. This will prevent the root ball from falling apart.

4. Make sure the tree is well watered before planting; continue to let the hose trickle at the base once planted until the area is well saturated. You can use any remaining soil to use arond the base to create a moat or a saucer effect to hold the water in when you do water.

5. Fertilize with Parkwood Transplanter fertilizer 5-15-5 at time of planting. This helps in reducing transplant shock and includes a rooting hormone which helps the tree get established quicker.

6. Stake your tree for the first couple of years until it is stable especially if it is in a windy open location.

7. Continue to water when needed and fertilize yearly with either tree fertilizer stakes, liquid or slow release granular what ever best suits your lifestyle.
