My new book, Eileen Downes...the artist who "paints" with bits of torn paper for a palette - selected works is now available for purchase.  The 55-page art book is a glossy, soft bound book filled with full-color photographs of my art from several series, including the Stepping-Up Series, American River Series, God's Wings Series, as well as seldom seen pieces from corporate and private collections.  The book includes introspective essays about my work and the creative process written by famed New Zealand assemblage artist, Dale Copeland and local Sacramento author Ginny L. Yttrup.

Beauty and the Brain
art piece goes to Neurosurgeon in Cleveland, Ohio

Making Art from the Sarcoma Experience...
My dear husband has been battling brain cancer for 5 years now. It has been a difficult struggle for him, for me as his wife, and for our three children. I felt compelled to build something positive out of this situation, so I did what I do best - I made art.
As a way to honor select US Neurosurgeons, I began a series of large, bright collage paintings called Beauty and the Brain.  I select top-notch US neurosurgeons from nominations made by patients, caregivers, staff and other sources, and I give the paintings to these neurosurgeons as a gift of appreciation for their skill, compassion, and caring demeanor. The first in the series went to Dr Cully Cobb in Sacramento, CA - my husband's neurosurgeon. Another was awarded to Dr Ossama Al-Mefty of the University of Arkansas Medical Center. He is known internationally for his pioneering surgical approach to previously "inoperable" tumors. Another painting went to Dr Chandranath Sen of St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.

I am currently working on the next painting which is for Dr Joung Lee, a neurosurgeon in Cleveland, Ohio. The doctors are quite surprised when they receive my letter telling them about the project, and that they will be receiving one of my paintings as a gift. I have not met any of them, except, of course for my husband's doctor. One neurosurgeon wrote me a heartfelt thank you note, but really the thank you goes to the doctors, and the paintings are actually from their patients, not from me. You see it is their patients who are appreciative of the doctors' skill, expertise and care.
one for Dr Lee
Here's the one for Dr Lee, currently in progress on my working wall in my studio...it should be completed this week.

Or read the article printed in our local newspaper describing the project.

It is an honor to be given the gift to create beautiful artwork, but it is a tremendous blessing to share it with others.
