Real Farm Bill Stories

The 2008 Farm Bill provided funding for a number of nutritional and developmental initiatives that may now be on the budgetary chopping block. Read about some of these successful initiatives that have benefited from various programs provided by that bill:

Just Food, Farm School NYC - Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program

Lower East Side (NYC) Girls Club - Community Food Projects Competitive Grant Program

Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York - Specialty Crop Block Grant Program

Greenmarket, GrowNYC - Farmers Market Promotion Program

New York Department of Agriculture and Markets - Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program

This series was assembled by Ed Yowell with the help of the FSNYC  policy interns and volunteers.

Freegan Pita

Foraging for Answers to Food Waste

Hans Bernier and Meret Hofer take a tour with Freegan.info in this insightful piece about how one group approaches the problem of the billions of pounds of food that are wasted in this country. After the waste reclamation tour, the group prepares a family-style meal with the foraged foods at a feast the next day, embracing the sense of community around the movement.
