September Open Networking Meeting
Engaging Parents Around Child Nutrition Through Schools
In the spirit of the back-to-school season, our September Open Networking Meeting will be a discussion centered around parental engagement in nutrition through schools. What are schools and organizations doing to encourage parents to make good decisions regarding their children's food consumption? What are best practices for engaging parents around nutrition issues? What are possibilities for the future? Find out the answers to these questions and more from our panel of speakers who are working in the field of child nutrition.
This conversation will be moderated by Elizabeth Solomon, Program Manager of Eat Well Play Hard for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). Panelists will include: Beatriz Beckford, School Food Coordinator, Brooklyn Food Coalition Stephen O'Brien, Director of Food and Food Support, SchoolFood Charmaine Ruddock, Project Director, Bronx Health REACH And others to be announced.

Post-Irene Farm Relief Resources
Many New York State farms have suffered major damage from Tropical Storm Irene in the form of flooded fields, power outages, and broken infrastructure. All of these will result in failed crops, stunted production, and a very difficult season ahead for many regional farmers. We urge you to show support of regional agriculture! Pig Island Returns This Saturday!
This weekend Pig Island II returns to Governors Island. This  huge outdoor cooking event features meat from a sustainable upstate farm and the creations of over 20 top NYC chefs. Accompanied by great craft beers, local wines, cooking demos, giveaways, and fun for the whole family, this event is not to be missed. Bring your friends and enjoy the last days of summer with some delicious food for a good cause. Get your tickets before they sell out!

Food Detective: Edible Schoolyard Brooklyn
Our resident Food Detective, Stephanie Miller, explores the one-year-old Edible Schoolyard in Brooklyn, the first of its kind in New York City. An initiative that is planning to expand to showcase schools in the remaining four boroughs by the end of the year. Since its inception, the program has become a model for school gardens and healthy eating curricula for schools nationwide. Read all about it and consider starting an edible garden at your school!

Video: Back to the Start
This animated video, created to promote the newly-launched Chipotle Cultivate Foundation, "depicts the life of a farmer as he slowly turns his family farm into an industrial animal factory before seeing the errors of his ways and opting for a more sustainable future." The Foundation was created with the goals of supporting family farms, providing food education, and promoting awareness of the importance of sustainable agriculture.
