August Open Networking Meeting
The Landscape of Food Policy Councils: Past, Present, Future
The August Open Networking Meeting will feature a panel of experts who will discuss the achievements and potentials of food policy councils around the United States, as well as the work of the NYS Food Policy Council. Learn about the USDA Hunger Free Communities Grant, which is helping support the creation of a food policy council in New York City.
The discussion will be moderated by Mark Dunlea, Executive Director of Hunger Action Network NYS. Panelists will include:

The People's Potluck at Taller Boricua Gallery
This summer, a series of artist-led dinner dialogues was held with community leaders around the city with the goal to encourage discussion of the various social issues facing contemporary society. Read about the experience from Hans Bernier, who participated in the July People's Potluck, which was focused on issues of food access.

Dekalb Market and Farm Opens in Brooklyn

A new market grows in Brooklyn this summer. The Downtown area celebrated the opening of the unique Dekalb Market, with food and retail vendors housed in shipping containers, on July 23. The market hosts an incubator urban farm on site, which will be used by community groups for educational purposes as well as growing food for people in need. Check out this photo tour of the new space, and then head on over this weekend to enjoy the full extent of what Dekalb Market has to offer.

Video: Urban Farm at the Battery
Ground was broken on the Battery Park Urban Farm this spring. Located in Downtown Manhattan, the one-acre farms serves as an outdoor classroom for several schools in the area. Challenge Yourself to be a Locavore this September
Here is your chance to show support for regional agriculture and do something interesting to celebrate the season. NOFA-NY is hosting the 2nd Annual Locavore Challenge and FSNYC is partnering on the initiative. We are daring you to participate in the free challenge and see how many of the fun activities you can complete. Try out something new like foraging, or host a locavore book club. You can commit to take a Bite-Sized, Meal-Sized, or even a Feast-Sized Challenge, and encourage all your friends to register with you!

The Return of Pig Island on September 10
Pig Island II will return to Governors Island this September. The  huge outdoor cooking event features meat from New York State Farms and the creations of 20 top NYC chefs. Accompanied by great craft beers, local wines, cooking demonstrations, fun giveaways, and entertainment for the whole family, this event is not to be missed. Bring your friends and enjoy the summer wind-down with some delicious food for a great cause.
