JANUARY OPEN NETWORKING MEETING
Please join us on Tuesday, January 18th for our January Open Networking Meeting at Food and Finance High School, where culinary arts, hydroponics and aquaponics are part of the school day. Meet just before noon for a tour of the school labs and kitchens with Jessica Mates, community liaison, and Philson Warner, of Cornell University Cooperative Extension NYC, and learn about plans for a rooftop aquaponics greenhouse. The program will follow at 12:30 in the VIP Room where we'll hear about different models of food system education in New York City high schools. *Note the date and please plan to arrive a few minutes early to get through school security in time for the tour.Where: VIP Room Food and Finance High School 525 West 50th Street New York, NY 10019 When: Tuesday, January 18, 2011 Tour of school begins at 12:00p.m. Panel starts at 12:30. Ed Yowell and Fern Gale Estrow begin the Farm Bill Series with this insightful introduction, which places the federal food and agriculture acts in a historical context and gives a brief overview of the 2008 Farm Bill with notations of important developments to set the stage for a discussion of what's to come in 2012.

Mapping the NYC Regional Foodshed
What does it take to revamp the national food system and solve the rising problem of childhood obesity? The team at Columbia University's Urban Design Lab may have part of the answer. Currently, they are working with the Stone Barns Center on the New York City Regional Foodshed Initiative, a study that will map and assess the food system of the New York Metropolitan region, and make recommendations for how to improve it.

The USDA/DOJ Hearings Are Over, What Now?
The five antitrust workshops held by the USDA and Department of Justice throughout 2010 ended with "Margins," which addressed issues facing consumers in a consolidated food industry. In this article, Adriana Velez discusses what to take away from the workshops, and what we may have to look forward to in the coming years.

NYC Chili Fest Comes to Chelsea Market
Don't wait another moment to get tickets for the hottest food event of the winter. Twenty of NYC's most talented chefs will prepare their tastiest chili recipes on Sunday, Jan. 30, in the 500-foot-long concourse of historic Chelsea Market. The event, with proceeds to benefit FSNYC, will be accompanied by beer, music, and good times. It is not to be missed.
