Assistance Keeps Family Afloat
Dan and Lindsey Stadick lived in a rental home just off of the Souris river in Minot. As the river rose in the spring, water was slowly creeping up to their living room window. When their world and living situation changed, the Stadick's received an emergency food box prepared by the Great Plains Food Bank.  They then learned that they were eligible for the SNAP Disaster Assistance Program.  Through that program they received a two person Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card to use for groceries to keep the household fed. The Stadicks have been fortunate in that they were able to close on a new home before the winter snow flies, but they are still dedicated to helping friends and neighbors clean up after the devastation "I never expected we would be the ones needing help," says Dan. "Many thanks to those who continue to help in our community, including the Great Plains Food Bank, you give us the strength we need to keep going."

Working Together for Our Neighbors
The Great Plains Food Bank has many partners that come together to engage their customers in creating a hunger-free North Dakota and western Minnesota. In the past three months many partners and friends have held large campaigns or participated in events to benefit Daily Bread, a perishable food recovery program of the Great Plains Food Bank.

During the month of July Hornbacher's asked their customers to donate to the Check Out Hunger campaign.  As a result, store managers and the executive management team presented the Great Plains Food Bank with a check for $35,499.  Matt's Quote

The 14th Annual Chefs' Gala and Auction held on October 12 was a sold out event that featured 25 chefs and beverage purveyors from throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area.  Merrill Lynch and it's employees generously sponsored this event with $7,000 which provides 70,000 meals for our hungry neighbors in need.  In addition, 600 guests joined together to raise over $58,000 to support Daily Bread and the Great Plains Food Bank. Thank you to the outstanding chefs and beverage purveyors for donating their time, talent and amazing foods; this event does not happen without them. Please think of their restaurants when you plan your next evening out and mark your calendars for the 15th Annual Chefs' Gala and Auction on October 10, 2012!

Food and Funds Drive 101

One of the sources of food we rely on each year comes from the hundreds of families, individuals, businesses, schools, churches, and service clubs that conduct community-wide food and fund drives. Last year we collected 286,657 pounds in food drives. That's a 172% increase in the total number of pounds in the last five years! If you are planning to have a food and funds drive for the holiday season, our website has an entire page dedicated to giving you the support that you are looking for to start your project. For this information please click hereThe Great Plains Food Bank also has a community events and communications coordinator who can assist you with planning and advise you on best practices for operating a food and fund drive. Please contact Cari Drees for more information as we work together to create hunger-free communities.
