Leading the Way in Client Choice
| | Dorothy Day Food Pantry freezers allow clients to choose their own frozen foods. | The Dorothy Day Food Pantry is not only one of the first agencies to work with the Great Plains Food Bank, it is also a leader in the "Choice Model". This model allows the client to take only what they need and want instead of getting food preboxed that they wouldn't use. For example, a father was able to choose a cake and frosting from the desserts shelf to make a cake for his son's birthday, and a Muslim family was able to choose products that don't contain pork. This food pantry model is a success, and Dorothy Day is serving as a model for other pantries to follow. Dorothy Day is also commited to the people they serve by being involved in many community events with churches and the tri-college system to inspire more people to help feed their hungry neighbors in need. Working Together to Make a Change
The Great Plains Food Bank, together with six Feeding America food banks is proud to be a founding partner of Hunger-Free Minnesota, a transformational, collaborative movement to fight hunger in our communities. We came together after a series of five groundbreaking hunger-related studies, conducted over the past 24 months, shed light on hunger's devastating, pervasive and costly grip on Minnesota. Among these studies is the Missing Meal Study which found an annual shortfall of 100 million meals among low-income Minnesotans. To learn more, or to join the movement, visit here.

Adding a Little Helps a Lot
The Great Plains Food Bank is excited to partner with all six Fargo-Moorhead Hornbacher's stores and their customers during the month of July for the Check Out Hunger campaign. This campaign is simple and easy. At the time of check-out, shoppers are invited to add a $1, $3 or $5 donation to their grocery bill. Donations collected will support the Daily Bread perishable food recovery program supplying quality and nutritious food to those living with, or at risk of hunger in the Cass-Clay community. "Our employees have been passionate about this campaign for the past 19 years," said Matt Leiseth, President of Hornbacher's. "Ending hunger in our community is a shared responsibility and the generosity of both our employees and our customers has created a spirit of togetherness as we work toward a common goal of feeding our hungry neighbors in need."

Supportors Stepped Up to the Challenge
The Great Plains Food Bank is working harder every day to assist individuals and their families right here in North Dakota and western Minnesota during these tough economic times. Hunger in our region is a daily challenge, and we are always looking for partners in our hunger relief efforts. That's why we were excited to participate in the Pound For Pound Challenge which brought together NBC's "The Biggest Loser: Couples," General Mills, Subway, and the Feeding America network of food banks! The Pound For Pound Challenge invited individuals to pledge their weight loss goals and or every pound pledged the Pound For Pound Challenge donated the monetary equivalent of a pound of food to the Great Plains Food Bank. The response we had from our state was inspiring! A grand total of 9086 pounds were pledged for the Great Plains Food Bank. On behalf of all of us, and the 66,000 people we serve each year, thank you for taking the Pound For Pound Challenge!
