Food Drives: 101
Hosting a food and/or fund drive is simple, and the Great Plains Food Bank has the tools to help make your charitable efforts a success.  We can provide collection containers, promotional materials and, if needed, pick-up the food at the end of your drive.  We will provide you with a report on how much food you collected and the impact it will have on our neighbors in need.  For more information on doing a food and fund drive click here

The Great Plains Food Bank operates out of a 36,000 square foot warehouse filled with perishable and non-perishable food items waiting to be distributed to our partner network of pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters and other charitable feeding programs that assist 1 in 12 individuals living with, or at risk of hunger.  Tours are offered at a time that's convenient and demonstrate to service clubs, schools, church groups, community members and donors how their dollars and volunteer service are directly impacting children, seniors and working families.  Up to 45 semi-loads of food can be stored in the warehouse, including freezer and refrigerator space, with food continually loading in and out of the docks.  To see for yourself and arrange a tour call Cari Drees at 701.476.9125.  A video tour of the GPFB will be available in the coming months, watch your Portions email for more details.  We look forward to working together to solve the problem of hunger in our community.
Check Out Hunger Rings Up Donations
Daily Bread, a program component of the Great Plains Food Bank will be getting a financial boost during the month of July with the annual Check Out Hunger campaign.  Area Hornbacher's have once again generously partnered with the GPFB and Daily Bread on this promotional effort at all of their store registers.  Hornbacher's customers are invited to add $1, $3, or $5 to their grocery bill in support of the Daily Bread program.  Last year this event raised over $17,000; our goal this year is $20,000.  For more information on how you can participate click here.
Introducing Our Network
The Great Plains Food Bank works with over 250 partner agencies to distribute food to nearly 62,000 hungry neighbors in need in 93 communities across North Dakota and Clay County.  Every month an agency is selected to provide information regarding their operation.  This information is then passed onto the rest of our partner agencies through the Food Bank  Highlights newsletter which is distributed with our monthly product list.  To learn more about our fantastic network of providers click here.

The state of North Dakota pledged a total of 20,562 pounds in the Pound for Pound Challenge.  The event, which goes through June 30, 2010 has already raised $800,000, or approximately 5.7million lbs. of food, a portion of which will be designated to the GPFB through the Feeding America network.  Congratulations North Dakota on your weight loss efforts!

Rates of hunger or near hunger among rural households is generally lower than urban households, but slightly higher than the national average.  The irony is that many of these food-insecure households are in the very rural and farm communities whose productivity feeds the world and provides low-cost wholesome food for American consumers.  Learn more
