Hi  ,

My clients suffer from a wide variety of illnesses and ailments.  But by far, the most common complaint I support is low energy.  Our lifestyles are busy and full of opportunity!  There is so much we want to experience.  But often we find we simply can't keep up.  We end up spending more time on the couch than we really desire.

We struggle with fatigue, exhaustion, and malaise for many different reasons.  In this month's issue, I discuss two of the most common.  The first may not surprise you:  a sluggish thyroid gland.  I hope many of you will join us for May's Thyroid Webinar and learn why your thyroid is keeping you overweight and tired.  The second most common energy zapper, though, might surprise you.  It is not a food or a gland problem.  Simply put:  it's being stuck in negative thoughts.  There is a huge connection between the state of our thoughts and the health of our body.  Is your mind holding back your body?  Are you sure?  Don't be too quick to say, "No - that's not me!".  Change your thoughts; change your entire life.

Eat on purpose. Live on purpose. Choose to be well!

Tired & Overweight?

Your Thyroid is Likely to Blame

Do you struggle with ongoing fatigue? General malaise and low energy? Elevated LDL cholesterol? Do you feel cold much of the time? Low sex drive? Trouble with memory? Is the outer third of your eyebrows very thin or missing? Severe PMS? Constipation? Do you have dry skin or hair loss? Most importantly: are you struggling to lose weight no matter what you do?

If you answer yes to many of the above questions, you may be challenged with hypothyroidism. An epidemic amongst Americans (especially women), a sluggish thyroid gland can create a host of inflammatory conditions that drag you down and keep you there - often for years at a time. Hypothyroidism can also be a hidden contributor to many chronic diseases such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, depression, heart disease, and obesity, just to name a few.

Are you running out of energy half way through your day? Your thyroid is like your body's thermostat. When your

thyroid is sluggish, your body doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone to keep your metabolism running efficiently. Unfortunately, most hypothyroidism is undiagnosed or written off as "just getting older". But what might surprise you is that even when treated, the typical thyroid prescription (i.e. levothyroxine like Synthroid) does not alleviate symptoms fully. That's right - the prescription does not solve your problems. It is not your imagination. You may get ~20% relief, but you continue to struggle. And no, you don't need an antidepressant. You just need to address the root cause of the problem. You do not have to be exhausted.

Join us for an in-depth, myth-busting exploration into hypothyroidism and how you can (finally) get relief!   This will be a live webinar class via phone/computer, so you may join us from almost anywhere. $35pp. Thursday, May 19, 7pm ET.  Click here to register!

Change Your Life:  Cleanse Your Mind

I still can't believe she said that to me again!
Here we go...another miserable day at work.
I am so pissed off.  Can you believe he did that to me!?
I just know this opportunity is going to fall through - yet again.  Sigh...
Why does this kind of stuff always happen to me?
Why is life so hard?

Contrary to how it often seems, the vast majority of our life experience is not what happens around us. But rather, the thoughts and feelings we have in response to what we experience. An event can last for 30 seconds. Our ongoing reaction to it usually lasts many, many times longer. Someone's quick retort that hurts our feelings can last 15 seconds. Our holding on to it - repeating it in our mind, amplifying it to friends, analyzing it lying awake in bed - can last days, or even decades. And color our entire lives.

Are negative thoughts setting the course for your life?In addition to cleaning out our bodies with a cleanse, spring is a great time of year to clean out our thoughts. What old, heavy, and negative thoughts are holding you back? It's easy to answer a quick, "No - that's not me; I don't do that." But are you sure?  Think about it for a moment.

Most of us spend a lot of our time ruminating about what we don't want...what makes us angry, why we're afraid, what we're worried will happen, what frustrates us, why we doubt ourselves. Mentally and emotionally, we get overwhelmed with these details. We end up talking about them to whoever will listen. These thoughts fill our minds while we drive our cars or go about our daily routine. They also keep our body in a chronic, low-level state of fight-or-flight. This mode pushes our adrenal glands to constantly secrete stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Over time, this stress leads to weight gain, inflammation, and many chronic diseases. This isn't speculation; it's been proven in medical studies.

Feel justified being angry or sad or frustrated? You might be stuck. When someone asks, "How are you?", how do you respond? Do you take the opportunity to celebrate what is going well - what makes you feel good? Or do you feel the need to run through your current list of problems and worries and frustrations? Without a conscious intention otherwise, our ego springs at the chance to be righteously upset. To justify our feeling bad. The problem is that all this emphasis makes these undesirable thoughts heavier, more burdensome, and magnetic in our minds. Is this really the life you want to choose?

What would it be like to just let your negative thoughts go?
Just release them. It's not about ignoring the facts in front of you. Be truthful with yourself. Acknowledge what you don't like. Feel your feelings.  But then just let the thought go. Instead, focus on doing what you need to do to move toward your goals.  Speed bumps?  Delays?  Twists? These are just opportunities to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to what we want. Navigate as you need to. But let the thoughts about it go. Let the stories go. Let the unexpected or "negative" events play as small a role in your life as they can. Otherwise negative thoughts usually attract more of what you don't want.

Being positive is the first step to finding joy.

This spring, develop the habit of choosing to think about what you DO want and to let it fill your thoughts. No matter what is happening in front of you, choose to focus on what makes you feel good. It takes practice. But I have seen it completely revolutionize lives. Including mine. The vast majority of our life experience is NOT what happens around us. It's the thoughts and feelings we have in response to those events. You can choose joy.

Sometimes a good laugh shakes us out of our stuck place, so we can refocus on what we want to attract in life. In that vein, I am happy to share this really comical blog post.  Don't miss it. Most jokes are funny because of how oh-so-close-to-the-truth they are. Enjoy!

Tell Me The Truth

Hi Tracy,

You've been working with one of my neighbors on weight loss and getting her thyroid to work better. We had coffee the other day, and she started munching on some brazil nuts. It's funny - these are the big ones in the "mixed nut" bag that I usually push aside, right? But I was surprised when my friend said brazil nuts were one of things you actually "prescribed" to her for thyroid support. Really? What's so special about brazil nuts? I want to know if I'm missing an opportunity in my snack.

Thanks, Am I Nuts?

Thanks for your question! One of the largest problems with typical thyroid medication (for hypothyroidism) is that it only provides T4 hormone. The most bioactive form of thyroid hormone in your body is actually T3. If your body struggles to convert T4 into T3, you won't get much relief from typical medication. Your body needs several key nutrients to convert T4 to T3 efficiently. One of them is selenium. Unfortunately, it is increasingly difficult to get sufficient minerals like selenium from our food. Large-scale commercial farming doesn't involve crop rotation. And the resulting food is simply less nutritious and woefully lacking in minerals. Luckily, nature's most abundant, edible source of selenium is common, tasty, and easy to store. Brazil nuts. Just 3 or 4 as a snack will give you a generous daily dose of selenium - and help your thyroid to give you abundant energy.

 Cooking on Purpose

As the days warm, all sorts of new produce arrives in stores. Here are a couple of delicious, simple sauces for vegetables. Delightful alternatives to the same old, processed Ranch dressing. Enjoy!

Savory Tahini Sauce

1/2 cup tahini (this is sesame      seed butter; find it in the        ethnic foods aisle)

1/4 cup water

3 tablespoons lemon juice (preferably fresh-squeezed: it will taste *much* better)

2 Tbsp natural soy sauce (e.g. shoyu or tamari)

2 Tbsp maple syrup

1-2 cloves fresh garlic, minced

pinch of cayenne (to your taste)

In a bowl briskly whisk together the tahini and water until combined. It will look separated at first: just keep whisking! Add remaining ingredients and whisk until combined. Salt and pepper to taste. Keeps in the fridge for up to a week. Delicious atop sautéed greens like kale or a whole grain side dish like quinoa.

 Zesty Avocado Dip

1 large peeled, pitted avocado (ripe ones are very dark in color and slightly soft when squeezed)

2/3 cup plain yogurt

1 diced tomato (until July, try hot house or grape varieties)

dash or two of cayenne pepper

½ tsp ground cumin

sea salt and black pepper

Mash avocado with a fork until very smooth. Add yogurt, tomato, spices. Blend until smooth in a food processor, in a blender or with a fork. Add sea salt and fresh black pepper to taste. Serve chilled. Excellent with raw cucumber slices or carrot sticks. Or scoop atop a black bean and brown rice medley with freshly minced cilantro and scallions on top.

What Inspires Me

The idea that you call "right" is the idea that someone else calls "wrong." The solution that you call "perfect" is the solution that another calls "unworkable." The position that you feel is unassailable is the very position that others assail.  It is not our job to "fix" someone else's view.  Love is not concerned with "right" and "wrong".  These positions are the very views that keep us apart.  Strive to find what brings mutual benefit.  All true benefits are mutual.
