Hi  ,

Spring is right around the corner. Really!  It is!

The snow cover is finally receding. Last week, I saw a robin in the Trader Joe's parking lot busily collecting bits of string and twigs for a nest. Her version of healthy shopping, perhaps?

Nature is already starting to shake off the heaviness of winter. Are you planning to do the same? After many, many requests, I am finally this year offering the Ultimate Spring Cleanse!  Want to lose a few pounds?  Trouble sleeping?  Stressed?  Tired?  Achy?

This time of year, most of us feel a little plugged up, weighted down, gunked up, tight, stiff, irritable, or inflamed.  You really can shake it all off. Join us!

March is also a great time for more myth-busting. New beginnings in how you perceive food. Are you a victim of white moustache brainwashing? Most of us are. Calcium is a critical nutrient for optimal health, but dairy foods like milk (even organic!) may actually not be your best way to get it.

Eat on purpose. Live on purpose. Choose to be well.

 It's March 18th and already something's blooming!

Dairy Delusions

Got Milk? You do not have to drink milk to be healthy.

Blasphemy, I know.

In fact, dairy foods like milk may be part of why you don't feel spectacular every day.

No matter how many mustache-bearing models you see say otherwise, milk does not necessarily do a body good.

The American Dairy Association wants us to think we will die early (or at least fall and break something important) without a daily glass of milk or two or four. In fact, there are entire countries of people who never eat dairy foods in their entire lives. And they still thrive, get plenty of calcium in their diets, and have Olympic teams. Did you know that over two-thirds (yes, more than 66%) of the world's population has some degree of lactose intolerance? This means your body lacks an enzyme called lactase and cannot digest milk well, causing bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, or other IBS-like symptoms. This is a gastro-intestinal issue and can be easily and 100% cured if you just stop eating dairy foods. If you're suffering, just choose to stop.

But the problem goes way beyond lactose intolerance. For many people, dairy foods are highly inflammatory (just like my reader question at right). As one of the top three food sensitivities in the US, dairy can cause post nasal drip, achy joints or muscles, skin inflammation like eczema, weight loss struggles, and low energy. Unlike lactose intolerance, this is not a GI problem; you may have no GI symptoms at all. Dairy sensitivity is an immune system issue. Your body decides dairy foods are a foreign invader (just like it does for e-Coli or the common-cold-causing rhinovirus) and develops antibodies against it. Antibodies allow your immune system to remember what milk looks like. Then every time you drink it, your immune system activates. And you don't feel well.  You might try fully eliminating all dairy foods for two weeks and take careful note of how you feel.  It really needs to be cold-turkey elimination to gauge your body's response.

Dairy sensitivity is growing! The more we make food look less natural to our immune systems, the more likely our bodies are to reject it. With most milk, we pasteurize it, homogenize it, pump it up with hormones and pharmaceuticals, and feed highly stressed-out dairy cows unnatural grains like corn.   Check out this short video from Dr. Mark Hyman to learn more about dairy myths.   Having low Vitamin D makes you more likely to develop food sensitivities, by the way. Go back to my February article about Vitamin D and depression if you missed it.
A hunk of cheese is part of our entertaining ritual
Many people don't even like dairy but force themselves to eat it for the calcium. Here's another myth! Studies repeatedly show that higher calcium intake does not help bones long-term. Shocking, I know. Flexible bones are made up of a matrix of protein. We typically become vulnerable to fractures as we age because we stop digesting protein well and/or (for women at least) our estrogen levels plummet. Strong bones are fortified with a rich mix of minerals including magnesium, boron, strontium, magnesium, manganese, and calcium. Vitamin D and Vitamin K are also critical to make sure the calcium you eat actually makes it into your bones (vs. more dangerous places like your kidneys are arteries). Unfortunately, mustached models don't talk about this complexity.

Yes, we need calcium! Our body uses calcium to run our muscles. Our bones are just our storehouse reserves. And if you do well with dairy foods, they are an excellent source of calcium. Especially fermented dairy like organic plain yogurt and cheese. I am also a big fan of organic, raw milk, but it can be hard to find in some states Here in Metrowest, you can find it in Framingham and Foxboro.  But if you don't feel at your best with dairy, calcium is prevalent in many other foods as well. Especially leafy green vegetables like spinach and collard greens and kale. Nuts like almonds and seeds like sesame are also good sources. Sesame seed butter called tahini is in most hummus and makes a great base for a stir-fry sauce. A delicious, natural sweet treat is a sesame seed bar called halvah.

If you do take calcium supplements, don't over do it! Despite promotion otherwise, high levels can end up hiding in places in your body. And causing big problems like clogged arteries and kidney stones. Did you know that a significant part of most arterial plaque build-up is calcium? Dr. Walter Willet, from Harvard University's School of Public Health (and easily the most respected nutritionist in the world) recommends no more than 700mg total calcium per day for healthy adults. And part of this comes from food (even without dairy). So I recommend most healthy adults don't need to supplement over 500mg. Calcium may also constipate you; if so, try increasing your magnesium intake.

Tell Me The Truth

Hi Tracy,
I got a serious problem with post nasal drip. Any ideas on what causes it or what I can do to make it stop? I don't have a cold or anything; I just have to constantly blow my nose or clear my throat. When I get a cold, it's even worse.

Signed,

Post Nasal Drip, Drip, Drip

Unfortunately, your discomfort is common - and a typical symptom of chronic inflammation. Your body is daily exposed to something it finds threatening. Sometimes, this is a household allergen. In the wintertime, we keep our houses shut up tight for warmth. Be sure to fully air out your house at least once a week.

However, in my practice I find the most typical cause of chronic post nasal drip is dairy foods. Yes, milk, cream, cheese, etc.. I highly recommend you try eliminating these foods for 2 weeks and see how you feel. To get a good result, you really need to eliminate them 100%. Be sure to look for hidden sources in processed foods (e.g. casein, whey). I know it sounds hard, but you can do it! Many of my clients have found great relief this way.

Dairy Free & Healthly Chocolate Mousse

Looks crazy, I know, but trust me; this tastes great!

1 & 1/2 ripe small avocados, peeled
1 package unsweetened silken tofu (at room temperature!)
2 tsp real vanilla extract
2 bars melted dark chocolate - at least 70% cacao content
2 Tbsp real maple syrup
10-15 drops of liquid stevia

Make sure the tofu is at room temperature and *fully* drained if it was sitting in water. You can get more water out of it by sitting a mug filled with water on top of the block for 15 min.. Melt the chocolate on the stove in a double boiler (or glass bowl set over a saucepan of boiling water). Don't melt it in the pot directly on a burner or in the microwave; it will burn. While the chocolate is cooling, put all other ingredients in a food processor and blend thoroughly until smooth and creamy (no chunks!). Then add chocolate and blend again until well mixed. Chill and serve cold. I love this topped with warmed, frozen berries mixed with a little vanilla.  This is a fun breakfast treat, high in both healthy fat and protein. Enjoy!
