Health and Wellness Tips Brought to you by Purpose LLC

March  2009

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant.
 If we did not sometimes taste of adversity,
 prosperity would not be so welcome.

- Anne Bradstreet
Hi ,
I was driving home from a local wellness fair yesterday and spied a carpet of purple crocus in a neighbor's yard just beginning to peek out of the ground.  I almost missed seeing them; they were beautiful but so subtle.  If I hadn't been paying attention, I would've totally missed them.  It's funny to me how such a simple thing can be so exciting.  I have focused the past year on being more attentive to what's actually going on around me.  This means paying less attention to that endless talking analysis and commentary going on in my head.  Instead, I try to absorb what I can actually see, hear, and feel in the moment.  It can be hard to do at first, but I find the practice tremendously freeing.  The advent of Spring is a great time to begin to live (and actually see the world around you!) on purpose.  Consider making a point to spend at least a few minutes each day outdoors simply taking in the miracle of nature around you.

Welcome to my many new subscribers!  I am happy and grateful to say my practice is booming and expanding.  There are so many fun activities coming up this Spring that I want to share with you... a brand new series of group classes on overcoming Stomach/GI ailments, cooking demonstrations (Glorious Greens is back for Spring!), one-night seminars on Beating Sugar and Overcoming Exhaustion, an exciting cocktail hour talk on Extreme Self-Care paired with a Natick Collection fashion show, a free teleconference you won't want to miss...and much more!  There are some details below and much more on my web page under Programs and Events:  www.eatonpurpose.com

Food Focus:  Water

Surprised to see a focus on water in the middle of the winter?  Actually this is the time of year when most of us (including most of my clients!) struggle with dehydration.  In the summer when it's hot and humid outside, it's easy to remember to drink liquids, especially cool and fresh water.  During the cold winter, however, cool drinks simply aren't as appealing.  The problem is that the winter air in most areas of the US is exceedingly dry.  So when you don't drink enough you may end up with dry skin, dry eyes, chapped lips, exhaustion, muscle aches, and extended bouts of illness.  So it's important to stay hydrated this Winter!

A common health myth is that everyone needs to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.  However, there's no scientific research backing this claim; each of our needs for water is a bit different depending on our bio-individuality, where we live, our activity level, and our diet.  The key is to listen to your body and respond to any sense of thirst.  Be sure to keep something to drink at hand at all times so you don't get dehydrated simply due to inconvenience.Hot and savory miso soup is a quick comfort food on a cold day!

Obviously the wide variety of sodas, heavily marketed "energy drinks" and "supplement waters" are not a healthy way to stay hydrated.  They are all loaded with sugar.  Most of us are less active in the winter, and extra sugar in our diet is the last thing we need to maintain a healthy weight.  So here are some healthy ideas to help you drink more.  Make water more interesting with a squeeze of citrus (lime, lemon, orange) or slices of cucumber (try it!).  If water doesn't appeal to you when it's cold, try drinking herbal or weak green tea (the latter is a great appetite suppressant, by the way).  Another option is diluted chicken broth:  a steamy and comforting mug can rejuvenate the soul on a cold day.  Low-sodium soups in general are a delicious way to give your body water.  Check out this months' recipe!  You might also try a mug of hot water with a slice of lemon or perhaps a few slices of fresh ginger; add a teaspoon of honey if you wish.  This tonic is a great way to start the day with H2O and soothe your gut and your throat at the same time.  Don't let the winter blues get you down.  Be creative in staying hydrated to ensure a high-energy winter!

Eating on Purpose: Are you giving in to Energy Drink Seduction?
So what's so wrong with all those energy and  "refreshment" drinks like Gatorade?
 Here again is the ingredient list for Gatorade Frost:

Can you guess this common American "food" product?

There are dozens of brands out there...Red Bull, Vitamin Water, SoBe, Propel, Snapple, PowerAde.   The public is becoming more concerned about the ill effects of soda (rightfully so!).  As a result, drink manufacturers have been quick to introduce a parade of new healthy-sounding, energy-promising drinks.  Some feature massive amounts of caffeine.  Some even throw in a few vitamins for good measure.  The harsh truth, however, is that they are still expensive, sugar-laden, artifically-colored bottles of water with a dash of chemicals.
A simple vegetable has been turned into our most dangerous sweetenerIf you think little on the label above sounds healthy and refreshing for your body, I must  agree with you.  I don't want to sound like the Food Police though; an occasional drink like this here and there is likely of little concern.  However, most Americans have a favorite drink or two that they consume daily, typically more than once.  My focus today is on high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).  You might have seen the deceptive TV ads aired the past few months trying to lull you into a false sense of security about HFCS.  I hope to give you some reasons to think otherwise!

We subsidize corn production in this country, so food manufacturers are always looking for new ways to process and sell it to the public. High Fructose Corn Syrup has been their crowning achievement: an incredibly cheap sweetener easy to mix with almost anything.  Unfortunately you find it in almost everything today...fruit drinks, spaghetti sauce, salad dressing, crackers, and virtually every commercial baked good and energy drink on the market.  The problem is that when eaten regularly HFCS increases appetite and promotes both obesity and diabetes.
No matter how good it tastes, it's not worth ruining your health!
You have a hormone in your brain called leptin.  Among other key bodily functions, it controls your satiety response to food.  In other words, it tells you to stop eating when you've had enough.  HFCS is chemically-engineered to suppress this hormonal response and has been shown to create leptin resistance.  Bottom line:  your body isn't as capable of telling you when to stop eating.  Over time, you give in to these terrible cravings and overeat, especially sugary or white-flour-laden foods which promote belly fat in particular.  Learn more here about what HFCS does to your body.

But here's something of even more concern!  HFCS is contaminated with mercury.  Almost everyone today is aware of mercury risks; heavy metal toxicity is at the root of dozens of modern epidemics like Alzheimer's,  Autism, Cancer, and Parkinson's.  A recent study found that HFCS processing methods in many factories contaminate the food with a very dangerous level of mercury.  The study results highlight mercury level by product if you want to learn more.  But in general, I think this is the crowning concern on an already tall stack of reasons to avoid HFCS.  It will take some diligence and keen label-reading, but you can become an expert with a little practice!  Make a choice on purpose to prioritize your health and pass on foods with high-fructose corn syrup.

March Recipe:
Cozy Chicken and Quinoa Soup

Ingredients:

* 1 lb boneless chicken breast (preferably free-range, no-hormone)
* 2 long celery stalks, chopped
* 2 long carrots, chopped
* 1 Large onion, peeled & chopped
* 2 cloves garlic, pressed or minced
* A couple sprigs of fresh thyme (strip off tiny green leaves and discard woody stems)
* One carton (32 oz) of chicken broth (preferably no MSG or additives - check label)
* 1 cup of quinoa, rinsed (preferably soaked in room temperature water for at least ~2 hrs)
* Small bunch of fresh parsley, finely minced
* Sea salt and pepper (to taste)
* 1 Tbsp olive oil
* 1 Tbsp butter
Note:  In case you are unfamiliar, quinoa is a whole grain commonly used in South America.  It's mild, nutty, and high in protein.  Try it!

Directions:
Cut chicken into small pieces.  Warm olive oil until shimmering in a soup pot or large saucepan.  Brown chicken for about 3 minutes.    To the pan, add butter, onion, celery, and carrots and sauté until vegetables are softened yet crispy and gold brown on the edges.  Now add garlic and thyme and sauté for about two minutes more until garlic is golden brown (be careful not to burn it).  Pour chicken stock in pan and stir quickly to remove bits from bottom of pan.  Bring to a boil.  Add rinsed quinoa.  Cover and reduce heat.
After 15 minutes, add salt and pepper to taste and parsley.  Cook for 5 more minutes and serve.
