Marist Young Adult Program |

Dear Marist Young Adults,
It is hard to believe that February has come and gone and that the season of Lent is already here! If you have not done so already, it might be a good time to ask yourself the following questions: What do you want to get out of Lent? What does Lent mean to you? Have the traditional practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving been sacrificed to the busyness of life?
The Marist community offers several opportunities for young adults to get the most out of the Lenten season. Through days of reflection, evenings of Taize prayer, retreats and an online chat, young adults can take a much needed step back, reconnect with the Marist family and refocus on their mission to make Jesus known and loved. Please check out the calendar below for event dates and the facebook group, Marist Young Adults, for further details.
If you have a suggestion or an idea for an event, feel free to contact me at Matt@MaristYoungAdult.com. Check out our website, www.MaristYoungAdult.com, for an event in your area.
Peace,
Matt Fallon
Chair, Marist Young Adult Advisory Committee

ONLINE RESOURCE
ONLINE SERVICE OPPORTUNITY
Although Christians are called to service during the season of Lent, one service that can get lost in the busyness of life is to take care of one's own spirit. Do some service for yourself this Lent. Check out the resources below and choose the ones that work for you.
Looking for something different to make Lent more meaningful? Check out "40," a series of sci-fi webisodes. "40" is the story of seven strangers who appear to be the only survivors of a catastrophic event. The fourteen, four to seven minute episodes, serve as a Lenten allegory that is accompanied by meditative reflections based upon scripture.

Looking to live more simply this Lent? Then Lent 4.5 might be for you. Lent 4.5 shows participants how to use the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving for good stewardship of the earth and a simple lifestyle based upon Gospel justice.

Looking for forgiveness? Boston College offers a brief Lenten reflection on the theme of forgiveness. Visitors to the site can share their thoughts and insights on the video by posting right on the page. (This resource was suggested by Br. John Dunning.)

Looking to think more about others? Relentless ACT:S of Sacrifice is a video series that challenges individuals to look at putting others before themselves. (This resource was suggested by Matt Fallon.)

Looking for practical inspiration? Br. Rene Roy writes a daily blog which you might want to consider for Lent. Check out the blog and consider subscribing.

How did you get involved with Marist?
I first got involved with the Marist community during my junior year of high school. I was a Senior Shepherd at school and one of the requirements was to attend a Marist Youth Encounter or one of our school retreats. To get it out of the way, I participated in a Marist Youth Encounter in February 2010. I did not know what to expect but I had heard great things about Esopus. During the weekend, I got to know myself, God and even my friends better. After the retreat I knew that I definitely wanted to be a leader. During senior year I was given an opportunity to be on the Kitchen and Program Support (KAPS) team. The experience was different, but I loved it! It reassured me that being a leader was extremely important, and that it held something very close to my heart.
Why are you still involved with Marist?
I'm still involved with the Marist family because of the impact of the Encounter. The experience my leader gave us that weekend was indescribable. It made me want to be a leader and create the experience for others.
How do you live out your Marist identity now?
I live my Marist identity by leading Encounters and by being part of the Marist Young Adult Program.
Do you have a Marist story to share?
For the April 2011 Encounter, Mr. Kupferman needed a female chaperone and asked my mother to come along. While I was working in the kitchen, my mother was experiencing her first Marist retreat. During the Encounter I gained a stronger bond with my mother. I wrote her a palanca to thank her for everything she has done. I was so proud of her for taking the time out to be an Encounter leader. I couldn't have been more excited to share the Esopus experience with my mother.
