Name:
Occupation: D
Director of Marist Youth Ministry
What experience do you bring to your work as Director of Marist Youth Ministry?hat
Teaching is the foundation to my work in youth ministry. Prior to taking vows as a brother, I taught History to sophomores at Marist High School in Chicago. This continued after profession until 1981 when I moved to Mississippi to teach religion and direct campus ministry at St. Joe High School in Jackson.
At one point, while at St. Joe, I began working with youth at our local parish. The rest is history. I eventually became Director of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Jackson (1987-1992). From Jackson, I ended up directing the Youth Ministry Office in Dutchess Country for the Archdiocese of New York for two years. In 1995 I returned to south Louisiana where I was principal of an alternative school for "at-risk" youth (1995-1997), followed by another opportunity to serve as Director of Youth Ministry this time for the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux (1997-2002). I also served as a member of the board of directors of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry and the Catholic Youth Foundation USA.
What hopes do you have for the Marist Youth programs?
My hope is to build upon the great program Br. Al Rivera began nine years ago. He has laid a great foundation upon which to "grow the program." Based on what I've seen these past few months of transition, there is a solid network of youth, young adults, and adults in our Marist schools and youth programs. Just about everyone I have met wants to be a part of what will unfold in the next few years. I hope to harness that energy and good will so that, together, we can grow the program. What that growth will look like, will depend on all of us.
What does being Marist mean to you?
To me, "Marist" is a mark of "identity". Regardless of where we are in Marist Evangelization--youth, young adult, adult, brother, or lay person--when we say we are Marist, we are claiming a common identity and mission. As Marists, we claim to follow Jesus in the manner of Mary. For Marists, following Jesus has a particular responsibility attached to it. There is a large mural hanging in the dining room at the retreat center in Esopus which illustrates this point very clearly for me. At one side of the print, St. Marcellin is seen gathering and leading young people to Mary. Mary, found in the middle of the mural, then leads these young people to Jesus. Jesus, depicted at the other end of the mural, is seen both breaking bread and reaching out to the poor and destitute. To be fully Marist, we not only go to Jesus through Mary, we also follow Jesus reaching out to those who need him the most. |
