ONLINE SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

Let's Say Thanks

Throughout the month of December, Marist Young Adults have been joining others in saying thanks to the troops serving overseas.  Sponsored by Xerox, the "Let's Say Thanks"  program allows an individual to choose a greeting card and add a message.  Xerox then prints the card and sends it to a soldier.

So far over 600,000 cards have been sent through facebook.  If you are interested in participating in the "Let's Say Thanks" campaign, just click on one of the icons.

Thanks

Merry Christmas Young Adults!

During this season of giving I would like to take a moment to reflect on some of the gifts for which the Marist Young Adult Advisory Committee is thankful.  We have made great strides in starting a group in New England.  In NY and NJ, young adults have been gathering regularly to help lead retreats and to provide service. The Miami group continues to be active and has sponsored some exciting events to celebrate Halloween and Advent; the group looks forward to starting "Theology on Tap" in the spring. In Texas Bernardo de la Garza-Trevino hosted a night of Scripture Reflection and invited people from his campus to share in the Marist spirit.  We look forward to an exciting Spring Semester!

In Chicago, we've had a bit of a rough start this year and are looking for someone from the region to serve as a representative on the advisory committee.  If you're interested in getting something started, please let us know!

As always, if you have any suggestions for an event please feel free to contact me at

Fallon85@gmail.com.

I hope this newsletter finds you among loved ones and looking forward to a new exciting year!

 THE SEASON OF SERVICE
                                                                     Erin Sleigh

Throughout December Marist Young Adults have been involved in a number of service activities.  A team of young adults helped to conduct a Junior Retreat for Mt. St. Michael Academy in the Bronx.  Young Adults throughout the country participated in "Ryan's Toy Roundup," a toy drive sponsored by the family of Erin Sisk to honor Erin's cousin Ryan and to help needy children throughout NJ.  Seventy-six young adults sent cards to soldiers overseas through the "Let's Say Thanks" program sponsored by Xerox (see side bar for more information).  And on December 18th, young adults in the NY/NJ area helped load "Santa's Sleigh" with over 400 bags of gifts for needy families in Elizabeth, NJ.

YOUNG ADULTS REPRESENTED AT THE
PROVINCIAL CHAPTER
                                                                     Caroline Chapter
Matt Fallon and Caroline White represented Marist Young Adults at the recent Provincial Chapter held in Esopus, NY.  During the Chapter the Brothers and their colleagues met to discuss issues facing the Marist community in the United States.  The chapter also marked the beginning of Bro. Ben Consigli's term as provincial.  The Brothers elected the following councilors to assist Bro. Ben:  Bro. Roy George (Vice Provincial), Bro. Hank Hammer, Bro. Kevin Handibode, Bro. Ken Hogan, Bro. Sean Sammon, and Bro. Steve Schlitte.
 ADVENT ONLINE RETREAT

Mike AdventSixty young adults participated in an online retreat held each Sunday during Advent.  Retreat materials, including one of the Sunday mass readings and reflection questions, were posted online.  Weekly reflections were prepared and presented by Mike Pastore, Matt Fallon, Nikki Guerrero and Roland Varriale.  An online chat was offered each Sunday for young adults to share their reflections.

How did you get involved with Marist?
I got involved with Marist through the retreats at Roselle Catholic as well as through the Encounter Program. I made my Encounter in April 2005 and have been an Encounter leader ever since!

Why are you still involved with Marist?
Marist is a family to me. It is a part of who I am and because of that, I stay connected.  I continue to work as a retreat leader because I want others to have the same experience of the Marist family.

How do you live out your Marist identity now?
I am an active member of the Marist Young Adult Program as well as a retreat leader. I am looking forward to helping other young adults learn more about the Marist message through my work on the Marist Young Adult Advisory Committee.
