ONLINE SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (C.I.W.) is attempting to get a one penny per pound increase in pay for picked tomatoes from Burger King. The workers currently make around 40 cents for every 32 pound bucket of tomatoes picked. This means that they must pick roughly 2 tons (4000lbs) to make $50 in one day. The one penny increase would almost double their pay. For more information on the efforts of C.I.W. or to sign a petition visit http://ciw-online.org/

luniceTwelve young adults in the NY/NJ area gathered for a Good Friday/Holy Saturday retreat in Esopus.  Participants were invited to enter into the passion of Jesus the Christ through music, video and visual arts.  Retreatants walked the Way of the Cross set to popular music, explored the effects of social sin through music videos and engaged in a visual meditation of the passion of the Christ using a variety of famous paintings.  Those present also joined the Redemptoristine Sisters for their Good Friday liturgy.

How did you get involved with Marist?
My first Marist experience was during my junior year of high school when I was invited to attend the Marist Youth Encounter.
Why are you still involved with Marist?

Three days at a retreat house in Upstate New York changed my life forever. It gave me a chance to look deep inside and realize who I am, what I wanted to do, and what I wanted to change. The experience helped me to take a new look at  myself and my relationships with God and with others. More importantly it helped me to grow. After that weekend I was hooked. I found any excuse to return to Esopus with amazing people - even if it meant cleaning some dishes :) I wanted to help others feel the way I felt after I left an awesome experience.

How do you live out your Marist identity now?
I try to be the best person I can be and live the Marist way. It's hard now being in the "real world," working and going to school. It's hard to take time to reflect and think about what Jesus has taught us. Thankfully I was asked to be part of the Marist Young Adult Advisory Comittee. It is truly an honor to share my thoughts and experiences with everyone in the Marist Community.
Anything that you want to add?
Before embarking on my Marist Encounter, I didn't even know who Marcellin Champagnat was. He was a face that was incorporated in our school's hallways and church. But that was it, he was just a face. After hearing the stories of Marcellin's life, his passion and the love the Brothers all shared, a face became a true hero, someone to admire and respect.
