Unfinished Business

NoRa CupcakeI love exploring new places to run. The fresh sights and sounds distract me from my rapidly beating heart and burning legs. It also frees me from my watch since I'm guaranteed a PR no matter how slow I go. The key driver of destination runs usually involves choosing a location close to a sweet post-run treat like apple cider doughnuts from Roger's Orchard in Southington, Bergen Bagels in Brooklyn or breakfast at Henry's Diner in Burlington, VT. Yes, I will admit that I run so I can eat.

A recent escapade started with an article in the Hartford Courant highlighting a new cupcake café in Middletown called NoRa.  The cupcakes they described were so unbelievably decadent that my running partner and I immediately started searching for runnable trails in the area so we had a legit excuse to indulge. Fortunately, Middletown is host to Wadsworth State Park and the Long Estate which have connecting trails so you can go for a nice run without repeating anything.

We mapped out a 4-mile run that included stops at the two waterfalls in the park. We found the first waterfall easily enough but got lost on the way to second/main waterfall and ended-up stuck on a circular trail. We could hear the water rushing, but couldn't figure out how to get there. It wasn't until our third loop that we realized we were going in circles and found a way out. By then, we had gone nearly 8 miles in 95 degree heat and were out of water so we headed back to the car.

Disappointed that we didn't achieve our goal of seeing both waterfalls, we drowned our sorrows and marveled at our inability to go the right way over the most amazing cupcakes. My friend had a Fat Elvis (banana cupcake filled with marshmallow and topped with a peanut butter cream cheese frosting and bacon). I couldn't decide between the one oozing with Butterfingers (one of my most-favorite candy bars) or their signature Irish Car Bomb featuring a Guinness-infused chocolate cake filled with a Jameson-laced chocolate ganache and topped with a Bailey's Irish Cream frosting and a Whopper for good measure. I went with the Butterfinger and it did not disappoint.

After looking at the map (which hindsight proves we should have brought), we realized we were just 100 yards from the waterfall which was accessible via a paved road that we thought was a dead end. The good news is that is gives us a reason to go back and end another run at NoRa. The Irish Car Bomb is calling my name. Unfinished business never tasted so sweet!

Schuyler's "Shoe" Review: New Garmins

Schuyler

In the past few years, we've seen GPS units transform from something that resembles a mid-80's cell phone on your wrist to sleeker, feature-rich units that look no different from a regular running watch. In fact, at a recent college cross-country reunion, a few former teammates were convinced that my watch was too small to be a GPS until they saw the Garmin logo.

While GPS units have become smaller and less expensive, they've also gotten a little confusing. More units on the market cater towards specific athletic niches from trail running to triathlon. In addition to watches from Garmin, Timex, Polar, Nike, Soleus, and more, many runners and triathletes are using their smartphones to track distance and speed. While this can be convenient, the type of GPS chip used in cell phones can have enormous variation in accuracy compared to GPS watches. Since cell phone GPS units are primarily designed to plot your car's movement on the nearest road or find the closest Starbucks, they don't need to be as accurate for stride-for-stride pace as a running GPS.

Garmin Forerunner 10One of the most exciting new GPS units on the market is Garmin's Forerunner 10. The men's version of the watch would be the smallest running GPS in the world, if it weren't for the fact that the women's version is even smaller. This is a perfect beginner runner's GPS, featuring walk/run alerts, a 5-hour battery life (3 weeks in time of day mode), and full waterproofing. Unlike many other entry-level GPS units, the Forerunner 10 can link to your computer so that you can analyze your data and see satellite views of your runs on Garmin Connect. For runners looking for a step up without breaking the bank, the Forerunner 210 bumps the battery life to 8-10 hours, adds optional heart rate connectivity, and features basic track-style interval workouts. Students and teachers can even get $50 back on a 210 with a valid school ID.

Garmin FenixThe other Garmin unit that is drawing attention is the opposite of the Forerunner 10. The Fenix is a fully-loaded watch for those heading into the great outdoors. Featuring full waterproofing, a barometric altimeter, compass, and compatibility with Garmin's BaseCamp mapping software, the Fenix is a revolution for hikers, backpackers, trail runners, and ultramarathon runners. The altimeter can provide real-time hill grade, while pre-loaded bread-crumb trails from BaseCamp can help you find your way.

For those taking some time on the trails, you can adjust the GPS sampling rate to balance accuracy with battery life. Hikers can set a one-minute sample for a battery life of up to fifty hours, trail runners can expect 25-30 hours, and mountain bikers can get 20 hours. For those taking advantage of that battery life on overnight endurance events, the backlight is one of the brightest ever. At its top setting, it can even be used as a backup flashlight.

Amy's Gear Corner:  Be Visible...Be Safe

For all you night owls or early birds, it is that time of year again where you need to be extra vigilant while out and about on the roads. We have an array of products to help you be seen by motorists. From blinking lights, highly visible hats, gloves, headbands, reflective vests and harnesses, to a huge assortment of reflective apparel, we have you covered.

Brooks NightLife: Brooks' famous NightLife collection, which made wearing highlighter-yellow hip, keeps getting better. This year, they've added fluorescent pink, orange and green to the mix and updated the technology by placing panels of black fabric and silver reflective strips in strategic locations that correspond with biomechanical movements so motorists and cyclists can see you sooner - and you stay safer.

Infiniti Half ZipInfiniti Half-Zip II Top (men & women): Wow, these tops sure are bright! This mid-weight top is great alone on cool mornings or as a layering piece when the air turns frosty - and if you get warm, just unzip a little for some natural air-conditioning! These flattering tops feature a longer fit, thumbholes (even for the men!) and a hidden zip pocket. The men's version is fluorescent yellow with black-contrast while the women's is a most-awesome brite pink with fluorescent yellow detail. The high-contrast color combos and retro-reflectivity really make this top pop!

LSD JacketLSD Jacket III (women): The new LSD Lite Jacket III brings a dash of style to an incredibly functional windproof and water-resistant jacket. We love the feather-light material that is perfect for fall and spring as well as clever features like double back ventilation, an easy cinch hood (no more annoying hood-in-the-eyes!) and self-packing option. NightLife yellow is paired with black to make you more visible, yet I think the color contrast looks stylish and sleek. It is sure to be many runner's favorite!

Nightlife JacketsEssential Run Jacket II (men and women): This go-to jacket is sharp and functional! The color contrast is striking during daylight hours and extra visible after dark. The silky material is the perfect combo of not-to-heavy, but not super light like the LSD jacket and is wind and water-resistant thanks to a DWR coating. New this year are side stretch panels so the jacket flexes with you and a soft mesh neck collar. Comfy. Dry. Safe! (want something a little less bright? We've got this jacket in blue for men and white/purple for women).

Utopia Arm WarmerUtopia Arm Warmers (men & women): "These are so cool!" and "Awesome!" along with "Fancy!" are just a few of the comments we've have heard since we put these arm warmers out. What makes them so special? Well, they 1.) are super-soft and long so they fit your whole arm. 2.) come in stylish purple or gradient black colors. 3.) have an upper-arm pocket AND a fold-over mitt! 4.) feature hidden thumbholes and 4.) have reflective details on the wrist. Get yours soon as these babies won't last long!.

Amphipod VizletVizlet Reflectors: These easy-to-attach reflectors can be added to just about anything! Clip them to your waistband, hydration belt, pack, shirt, sleeve, color, vest or cap! They are available in a triangle shape and a flower shape, in three fluorescent colors with some featuring flashing LED lights for added safety.

Argyle SocksArgyle Compression Socks (men and women): Argyle compression socks? Oh yeah! These fun socks do more than make you look awesome - they will have you feeling awesome too thanks to the graduated compression that increases your blood circulation to decreases recovery time. Made by our friends at Zensah, these knee-high socks cover the full calf area and feature moisture-wicking fabric with silver ions for thermal regulation and odor control. There is even extra padding in the heel and toe for added shock absorption! Wear these nerdy, but cool socks pre, during and post-exercise!

Fall 5k Training Program - Begins Saturday!

No Boundaries - Summer 2012
Congrats to our Summer 2012 Graduates!

I's not too late to accomplish your goal of finishing your first 5k or running a personal best in 2012!  Our popular No Boundaries Training Program in partnership with New Balance will be kicking off its last session of the year on Saturday, Sept 29 at 9am.  The program ends with the Mitten Run 5k in Blue Back Square on December 1.

This program will feature 3 different training groups: Walkers, Beginning Runners/Couch Potatoes and Intermediate Runners looking to improve their 5k time. Runners will be able to choose between practices on Saturday mornings at 9am or Wednesday evenings at 6pm (the Walking Group will meet on Saturday's at 9am).

The Beginner Program is designed for people who don't run, those who have a hard time sticking to a running program or are unsure what to do.  We use run/walk intervals and slowly ramp-up the time spent running and distance covered until you can complete a full 5k (3.1 miles).  Our Advanced Program is designed to help you run faster and more comfortably including introducing speed work and oh-so-fun hill repeats!

Both groups will learn proper form using New Balance's Good Form Running Program principles and a runner-specific dynamic warm-up that together will help you run more efficiently, decrease your chance for injury...and enjoy life on the run!

We will kick-off the 10-week program with an Information/Meet the Coaches Night on Thursday, September 27 at 6:30pm.  Registration is $95 (this does NOT include the race entry fee). All participants will get a cool technical running shirt and first-time participants who complete at least half the practices will earn themselves a sweet running jacket courtesy of New Balance. Repeat participants will earn a $20 gift certificate to the store.

No one is too old or too slow for this program so be courageous and join us!  Learn more and register online here or in the store.

Sports Bra FitFest & Sale - Oct 17

Moving Comfort Fit FestIt's time for our quarterly Cupperaware Party sponsored by our friends at Moving Comfort and Enell (makers of Oprah's favorite sports bra)!

The latest research shows that more than 50 percent of women experience breast pain when exercising due to excess movement. Whether you are running, walking or jumping, your girls move in a Figure-8 pattern: up-down and side-to-side. This movement strains your Cooper's ligaments which can lead to premature sagging and back problems, not to mention the chafing that makes showering not so fun after a workout.

It's time to show your girls some love and support - and not with one of those cheap over-the-head sports bras that smooshes instead of controlling and enhancing! Join us on Wednesday, October 17 for a special sale on Moving Comfort & Enell Sports Bras. Save 10% on one bra or 20% on two or more bras - plus, you will receive $5 in Fleet Feet Bucks for each bra bought that can use be used towards any apparel purchase that day (e.g. buy three bras, get $15 to put towards that cute top you've been eyeing).

Email Chaz at events@fleetfeethartford.com or call the store at 860-233-8077 to make an appointment to get professionally fit for a sports bra and we'll reward you with a gift of appreciation as well.

Tasty Tomatillos

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out & Play - & Soak-up Vitiman D

Add some interesting to your shopping cart or reusable tote bag this week. Have you everpurchased tomatillos? These green relatives of tomatoes are staples in Mexican cooking. They are the main ingredient in green salsa verde. Tomatillos are versatile members of thenightshade family and thus related to tomatoes. The fruit is green and about the size of a golfball. Inside you'll find a meaty, white flesh with tiny edible white seeds. They are surrounded byan inedible papery husk, ranging in color from pale green to light grocery bag brown.

Tomatillos can be served several ways. I like serving them raw in a salsa-like salad withchopped tomatoes and corn. They add a unique citrusy taste. I'll eat this salad by the forkful orspread it on top of grilled fish or chicken. As the days grow colder, my tendency is cook warmingfoods like stews and chilis. The following recipe calls for roasting the tomatillos to deepen theflavors. A sauce can be whipped up in a few steps and then combined with chicken, onions andstock to make a flavorful stew.

Tomatillo Chicken Stew

Ingredients:

Tomatillo Sauce:

  • 1 1/2 lbs tomatillos
  • 1-2 jalapeño chile peppers, or 2-3 serrano chili peppers (include the seeds if you want the heat, remove them if you don't want the heat), stems discarded, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tbsp lime (or lemon) juice
  1. Remove papery husks from the tomatillos and rinse well.
  2. Cut the tomatillos in half and place them cut-side down on an aluminum foil-lined roasting pan.
  3. Broil for 5-7 minutes until blackened in spots.
  4. Let cool enough to handle.
  5. Place the tomatillos, any juice they have released, chile peppers, garlic, salt, lime juice and sugar in a blender, and pulse until well blended.
  6. If you make ahead, refrigerate until needed.

Stew:

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, trimmed of excess fat, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil
  • 2 yellow onions, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 1/2 cup chicken stock
  • 2 cups tomatillo sauce (see recipe above)
  • 1 teaspoon dry oregano or 1 tablespoon fresh, chopped
  • 1/2 cup packed chopped cilantro (about one bunch, rinsed and chopped, stems and leaves)
  1. Heat a couple tablespoons of olive oil in a large, thick-bottomed pot on medium heat.
  2. Patdry the cubed chicken parts with paper towels. Sprinkle salt and pepper over them.
  3. Workingin batches so as not to crowd the pan, and adding more olive oil when necessary, brown thechicken pieces on two sides (make sure there is room between them otherwise they will steam and not brown - and don't move them until they arebrowned on one side.
  4. Use tongs or a metal spatula to turn them over and don't move themagain until they are browned on the other side.
  5. Do not cook through, just brown.
  6. Removethe chicken pieces from the pan and lower the heat to medium. There should be a nice layer ofbrowned bits at the bottom of the pan.
  7. Add the onions to the pan, and a tablespoon or two more olive oil if needed (likely). Addground cumin and coriander. Cook a few minutes, stirring occasionally until onions are softenedand the browned bits from the chicken have been picked up by the onions and are no longer sticking to the pan. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds more, until fragrant.
  8. Add the browned chicken, the tomatillo sauce, chicken stock, and oregano to the pan. Stir tocombine. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Cook, partially covered, for 20 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Add the cilantro to the stew in the last minute or so of cooking.
  9. Serve over white rice, accompanied with sour cream if needed to offset the heat from thechiles.

 Iron Heart Book Signing

Oct 11 @ 7-8pm

Brian Boyle's Book

Join us on Thursday, October 11 at 7pm in the store to meet Brian Boyle and hear his triumphant comeback story and purchase an autographed copy of his book, Iron Heart. If you are running Hartford, Brian's story will inspire you to keep going when the going gets tough.

Brian Boyle had just graduated from high school where he was a champion swimmer when his car was hit by a dump truck and he suffered near-fatal injuries. Brian's heart actually moved across his chest in the crash.  He was in a medically induced coma and given little chance of survival.  During many operations, he received 36 blood transfusions and 13 plasma treatments which helped to save his life.

Due to Brian's determination and physical conditioning, Brian gradually progressed from a coma to a wheelchair, eventually competing in the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii and finishing this year's New York City Ironman Triathlon in less than 11 hours. This October he will be running the ING Hartford Marathon to represent the many blood recipients whose lives have been saved, in part, due to Red Cross blood donors.

Brian will have copies of his book for sale and is happy to inscribe them.

 Yoga to Complement

Your Peak Training Period

The majority of athletes in our area are in their "Peak Period" in their training. This means that the season is almost over and that we are just about to complete our big and important races. When you reach your Peak Period, it is appropriate to eliminate intensity in your yoga practice. Overdoing it will affect your race performance.

This is a great opportunity to have a more gentle yoga practice. While we still work and strengthen our core at the beginning of our class, you will find us using longer and more relaxing holds. You can also use this time to focus on the breath and meditation to calm any nervous energy that may be brewing!

Have you begun a taper? Perfect timing! Come check out our class - Sundays at Fleet Feet 5.30pm!
