Be The Movement

THE EXTRA MILE

Issue #112

 Sept 11, 2012

Remember

Sept 11Eleven years ago I awoke to super-blue skies and crisp fall air - much like the weather this morning. There is nothing like a gorgeous morning to reinvigorate the spirit and put you in a great mood. At 8:46am, those cloudless, beautiful skies would be marred by the first of four ugly acts of terrorism in the span of 77 minutes, and the resiliency of Americans would be tested.

What initially seemed to be an isolated event, turned into a widespread war zone as planes crashed into the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, PA and rumors of bombs and other hijacked planes spread. The world seemed to stop spinning. People halted their morning routines and were glued, breathless, to the horrific images on TV. For an instant, America seemed defeated.

But the human spirit cannot be conquered so easily. Literally, out of the ashes and burning buildings, people united to help each other. First responders of all ranks and levels (including a fire department chaplin), on-duty and off, risked their own lives to save others. Strangers wiped the dust off of fellow strangers, offering water, food, rides home and a shoulder to lean on. A group of incredibly brave passengers onboard a hijacked plane sacrificed their lives with the rallying cry, "Let's Roll".

I find great comfort and pride that in humanity's darkest moments we put our differences, be it race, creed, political persuasion, nationality, social status or pride, aside and unite to support each other. Only together can we conquer adversity and accomplish great things. Together, our spirit can never be defeated.

Today we remember those who died and their families who carry on as their loved ones would have wanted. We honor them, their selfless sacrifice and the resiliency of America when we rise above our differences and help a fellow stranger. I can think of no better way to commemorate 9/11 than with a random act of kindness. I encourage you to do the same

Let's Roll!

Schuyler's Shoe Review: Cross Trainers

Schuyler

Every now and then we'll see shoes come through the door with some unmistakable wear patterns. They have holes in the sides where the upper meets the midsole, rubber peeling off the sole by the big toe or the little toe, and are blown out on both sides of the heel collar. Each of these shoes was subjected to a similar form of abuse: they were running shoes that were used for cross-training activities with lateral movement: CrossFit, P90X, Insanity, or any similar boot camp, aerobics, or cardio class at home or at the gym.

New Balance 871 Cross-trainers are often misunderstood. While many people think that cross-trainer means "cross-activity" or "cross-surface," a cross-trainer is really ideal for any activity with lateral (side-to-side) movement. If your workout involves box jumps, plyometrics, lunges, planks, pivots, or any similar activities, a running shoe isn't built to take those types of movements. Designed for side-to-side movement, a cross-trainer will hold the foot in, preventing you from rolling your ankle and retaining durability when subjected to these types of activities.

Saucony Trex Some of the most technical cross-trainers include the New Balance 871 and Saucony Trex. These shoes feature flared soles that can prevent you from rolling your ankle out, midfoot cradles, and very snug uppers to keep your foot firm to the platform of the shoe. These is also an emphasis on forefoot cushioning, since cross-training activities get you up on your forefoot more than running or walking. Shoes like the Ryka Transpire and Saucony V2 resemble running shoes visually, but still have this emphasis on forefoot cushioning.

Ryka Exertion Some cross-trainers get even more specialized. The Ryka Exertion is a shoe designed specifically for cardio-dance activities like Zumba. This shoe features a smoother bottom that is non-marking, as well as an emphasis on pivot stability, allowing you to sport your dance moves while staying well-supported.

New Balance Minimus Many CrossFit and P90X practitioners prefer the opposite: something less specialized. For these activities, you can consider a more minimalist shoe like the New Balance Minimus Trail. This shoe is incredibly flexible, but has a snug midfoot-band that holds the foot in for side-to-side movement. Regardless of which shoe you pick, any of these activities can complement your running-and your running shoes-to make you a stronger, more well-rounded athlete.

Amy's Gear Corner:

Saucony Boston PantBoston Pant (Men & Women): This is a classic beloved by runners of many generations! Not much has changed since Hind first debuted this pant (originally called the Munich Pant). It still features a comfy elastic waistband, zippered legs and a butter-soft, yet durable fabric - but now there are side zip pockets for secure storage! We always sell out of this pant (so does Saucony) so don't wait until the first frost!

Saucony Revel Long SleeveRevel Long Sleeve (Men): Go from a hard-core workout to errands around town in this great long sleeve tech tee. The heathered knit fabric makes look and feel like cotton, but it is a moisture-wicking synthetic material with 50+ UPF. The semi-fitted design and reflective elements make this a perfect all-around performance tee perfect for fall running, walking and/or hiking!

Saucony Cha Cha CapriCha Cha Flex Capri (Women): Wearing this capri may add a little cha-cha-cha to your stride! Designed to move WITH you, thanks to the 4-way stretch fabric that flates at the knees and wide, flat waistband that feels comfy whether you are running, walking, at the gym or doing yoga. Tired of basic black? You'll love the dark gray colorway with a pop of fuchsia on the waistband that matches perfectly with the LX long sleeve and LX Tank.

Saucony LX Tight ShortRun LX Tight Short (Women): Fans of fitted shorts will love this great 3" inseam short featuring a breathable, wicking stretch fabric to keep you cool and comfortable - even during hot yoga! The short has an inner slot pocket at the waistband for your key, fuel or chapstick and a fashionable ModStripe waistband for extra flair. Super comfy!

Saucony LX TopRun LX Long Sleeve (Women): The LX stands for "luxury" in this rockin' long sleeve v-neck tee. This soon-to-be-favorite is versatile enough to wear before, during and after your workouts. The v-neck and MODStripe fabric creates a stylish and high performing combo, while the soft stretchy fabric is soft, sleek and flattering. Cool shifted side seams prevent chafing too. Nice!

Saucony Run LX TankRun LX Tank (Women): Hit the roads, trails or gym in this fun and sassy tank! It features Saucony's soft, but high-tech PowerKnit LT fabric for optimum sweat-wicking, stink-reducing performance. A/B-cup girls can get the support they need from the built-in shelf bra and X-back design, while C/D-cups may want to wear their own bra underneath for added support. The fitted design makes this tank look both athletic and feminine so you can show that you are one fit chick!

Fall 5k Training Program - Sign-up Today!

No Boundaries - Summer 2012
Congrats to our Summer 2012 Graduates!

It's not too late to accomplish your goal of finishing your first 5k or running a personal best in 2012!  Our popular No Boundaries Training Program in partnership with New Balance will be kicking off its last session of the year on Saturday, Sept 29 at 9am.  The program ends with the Mitten Run 5k in Blue Back Square on December 1.

This program will feature 3 different training groups: Walkers, Beginning Runners/Couch Potatoes and Intermediate Runners looking to improve their 5k time. Runners will be able to choose between practices on Saturday mornings at 9am or Wednesday evenings at 6pm (the Walking Group will meet on Saturday's at 9am).

The Beginner Program is designed for people who don't run, those who have a hard time sticking to a running program or are unsure what to do.  We use run/walk intervals and slowly ramp-up the time spent running and distance covered until you can complete a full 5k (3.1 miles).  Our Advanced Program is designed to help you run faster and more comfortably including introducing speed work and oh-so-fun hill repeats!

Both groups will learn proper form using New Balance's Good Form Running Program principles and a runner-specific dynamic warm-up that together will help you run more efficiently, decrease your chance for injury...and enjoy life on the run!

We will kick-off the 10-week program with an Information/Meet the Coaches Night on Thursday, September 27 at 6:30pm.  Registration is $95 (this does NOT include the race entry fee). All participants will get a cool technical running shirt and first-time participants who complete at least half the practices will earn themselves a sweet running jacket courtesy of New Balance. Repeat participants will earn a $20 gift certificate to the store.

No one is too old or too slow for this program so be courageous and join us!  Learn more and register online here or in the store.

Kid's Running Program - Only 47 slots left!

If your kids like to run, we've got a fun program just for them: Zoomerangs!  This non-competitive "open track" program is designed for kids aged 4-13. It gives them the opportunity to experience running in a fun, friendly atmosphere where the motto is "Will run for worms" (gummy worms, that is!).

Zoomerangs! It's a great place for kids to run safely, correctly using good form, make friends and get stronger/build endurance so they can perform better in other sports (or rock the mile in gym class). Most of all, our goal is to empower kids to accomplish their goals and instill in them a lifelong love of running. It's also a great opportunity for mom and dad to spend quality time with your kids - and get in shape too!

Thanks to our friends at the  Glastonbury River Runners, we will be again hosting a session in Glastonbury (at Smith Middle School) and one in West Hartford (at the University of Saint Joseph track).  Both will meet on Sunday's at 3:30pm.

Zucchini Brownies

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out & Play - & Soak-up Vitiman D

Is there someone in your household who dislikes eating their veggies and prefers to eat sweets? To combat this behavior it might be necessary to be a little sneaky. There are several cookbooks out there, including Jessica Seinfeld's Deceptively Delicious, that highlight recipes which adds cauliflower, squash and other vegetables into your weekly meals. The Sneaky Chef uses various vegetable purees to boost the nutritional content of her recipes. The other ingredients and flavors mask the taste of the veggies.

In your search for these sneaky recipes, always consider the ingredient list. Cookies with bananas and zucchini might sound healthy, but if the recipe includes almost a cup of sugar and several teaspoons of butter, it might be a good idea to pass over this recipe. The following recipe balances sweetness, fats and veggie quite nicely. I made this for a Labor Day picnic and people couldn't believe there was no flour and they were gluten free.

Zucchini Brownies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup almond butter
  • 1 cup chopped or grated zucchini (to make really small pieces, shred then cut the zucchini)
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  •

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350.
  2. Combine all the ingredients into a large bowl and mix everything together.
  3. Pour into a greased 9x9 baking pan.
  4. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Spring Marathon Training Program Info Meeting

(Destination: UTAH!)

Sept 18 @7pm

Sand Hollow Marathon

Do you have a passion for running and traveling? If so, then Get Out N Play's Destination Marathon to Utah should be at the top of your list. In March, Aubrey Schulz and Bill Honeck are bringing a group of runners to the land of red rocks and vibrant blue skies in Hurricane, Utah, on the doorstep of the world famous St. George and two fabulous National Parks; Zion and Bryce.

Fly into Las Vegas on Thursday, March 28th and get settled into your condo, where you'll be spending the next four nights. On Friday, we'll spend the day preparing for the race with yoga, packet pick-up and the important pre-race meal. Saturday is your day to tackle the 26.2 miles on The Hollows Marathon.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a more scenic course. The roads take you around and into the Sand Hollow Reservoir and along the surrounding streets with views of cliffs and sweeping vistas. The out and back course does feature a considerable hill at mile 18, with the rest of the course consisting of rolling hills. On Sunday, you'll have a few options; including golf, sunning on the red rocks, or a trip to Zion National Park. Then on Monday, it's time to make the journey back to the East Coast.

To help prepare you for this spring marathon, Aubrey and Bill will coach you for 20 weeks. You should be able to run six miles on our November 4th start. We'll be training as a group with runs on Tuesday evening and long runs on Sunday mornings. Interspersed throughout the training will be eight seminars on topics designed to improve your training and race performance. Throughout this program, you will have unlimited access to your coaches - and Adidas has sponsored some sweet swag!

A spring marathon is a perfect way to start your 2013 season. Come into the race well prepared and injury free with a huge foundation to surprise yourself and build confidence in your racing abilities. Add this marathon to your list of accomplishments.

Attend the open house at Fleet Feet on Tuesday, September 18th at 7 PM. Email Aubrey or Billwith questions and to RSVP in info night.

Don't want to travel to Utah?  This training program will also be appropriate for those running the Nation's Marathon in DC (March 16) or the Cape May, NJ Marathon (March 24).

 Yoga to Complement

Your Training

How can you use yoga to complement your training? Goal-oriented training, or periodization training, means that your training is organized around the races that are most important to you. You divide your year into "periods" or smaller "mesocycles." During each mesocycle, a specific type of training is emphasized. Each mesocyle builds on the one preceding it to enable you to move from building a solid base to reaching your peak just in time for your top race.

Simply put, the intensity of your yoga practice should be in inverse proportion to the intensity of your mesocycle.

If you come to our weekly yoga class now, you will find a LOT of recovery going on. Of course, we still focus on the core, but our strength work is limited. Most people are racing now, or just finishing their big races. The intensity of the class now is low. However, as we move into winter you will find that we will kick up the intensity and bring on more strength work.

Come check out our class - Sundays at Fleet Feet 5:30pm! We are very informal and we laugh as much as we can. Let me know if you are a beginner, have any injuries, and where you are in your training cycle.

Meghan is a certified yoga instructor and a certifiably crazy ultra-runner (she is training for a 100-mile race this fall). Catch up via her blog, Facebook pageTwitter (@MegColFanning) or email:
