The endless heat and humidity has made it extra tough to train this summer. Sucking wind has taken on new meaning as it feels like every breath is through a straw. Gallons of sweat seep out of every pour making it look like we went for a swim rather than a run. Even the smallest hills feel like mountains.
But we dig deep to find the strength to lace up our shoes and complete our workouts. We shut out that voice in our head that says "can't", "won't" and "it's too hot". Instead, we convince ourselves to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Maybe slower than usual, but still, we move forward. We know our efforts will pay dividends come fall. We know the sweet rewards of success and perseverance will be ours. We know we will have earned it.
Saucony is hosting a contest for running stores throughout the country to create videos showing how their community "Finds its Strong" and inspires others. Because the more we all run, the stronger we all get. We need your help to make our video and invite you to send us your photos and short (<30 second) video clips showing what makes you strong. Maybe it's your posse of running mates. Your coach. A motivational sign or song. A well-deserved post-run treat. The admiration of your family when you conquered your goal. A clean bill of health.
Send your photos/video to steph@fleetfeethartford.com or drop them off at the store before August 26. Strong is out there. We want to know, what's yours?

Meet Our New Sports Medicine Director |
In our quest to be more than just a shoe store, I am very excited to announce that Stacy (Ciarleglio) Provencher has joined our team as our full-time Sports Medicine Director and Athletic Trainer. Stacy joins us after eight years of managing the sports medicine program at Select Physical Therapy and being the athletic trainer at Hall High School. Many of you already know Stacy as she frequently staffed our Saturday morning injury assessments, met with our training group participants and helped manage our Running Clinics.
Stacy received her B.S. in athletic training from Northeastern University and M.S. at University of Hartford. She is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), RRCA-certified running coach, American Red Cross CPR Instructor and, most recently, earned her functional movement screen and kinesiotaping certifications. Even better, Stacy is an avid runner, having completed her first ultra this spring and is a huge proponent of using body-weight and dynamic exercises to build core strength and improve stability, leading to more efficient, injury-free running so don't be surprised when she recommends replacing a day or two of running with gym time.
Her role at Fleet Feet Sports will include offering free in-store injury assessments, helping fit customers with medical issues/injuries, training staff on the latest biomechanics research and video gait analysis techniques, enhancing our training programs by incorporating core-strength elements and functional movement screens, producing medical content for our web site and visiting local businesses to host Fit Clinics and Lunch-and-Learns. Her Injury Assessment hours are posted under the Events Calendar, but you can also contact her via email. stacy@fleetfeethartford.com. |
XC Spike Night - Monday, Aug 27 - 4-7pm |
All middle and high school XC athletes are invited to join us for our Saucony XC Spike Spectacular on Monday, August 27 from 4-7pm! We're switching things up a bit this year to add some elements of fun and tips that will make you a better runner. Of course, there will still be swag, pizza, beverages, discounts on spikes and trainers and this year's limited-edition tee that may be our coolest design ever.
At 4:00pm the festivities will kick-off with a 20min Good Form Running Clinic that will focus on the four keys to help you run more efficiently and injury free including running posture and cadence. The clinic is participatory, so wear your running shoes and gear so you can do the drills and exercises.
After the clinic, we'll host an XC Expo featuring tables showcasing the latest products (spikes, massage tools, compression and nutrition) as well as some fun and games to test your spike wrenching and counting abilities. Sweet prizes to the winners.
Inside the store, we'll have extra staff on hand to fit you for the perfect pair of spikes and trainers. In addition to 10% off, you'll receive the limited-edition t-shirt and can pick from our rainbow of shoelace colors to customize your kicks even more.
To top it off, your team will earn a check worth 10% of your team's purchases that day to be used towards uniforms, shirts, post-season party, etc. Plus, the school with the highest percentage of their team purchasing their spikes at Fleet Feet Sports from August 27-September 2 will get a special visit from a 2012 Track Olympian at practice. Oh yeah!! |
Schuyler's Shoe Review: XC Spikes |

With the Olympic track action over in London, speed is on many runners' minds. From Galen Rupp's 10,000 performance that brought home to the United States its first Olympic distance track medal in almost four decades, to Mo Farah's amazing 5,000-10,000 double gold medal, to Meb Keflezighi's fourth-place comeback in the Marathon, many of us were glued to our televisions and Internet streams. With these races as inspiration, high school runners everywhere are ready for a season of fast and muddy cross-country racing.
Traditionally, cross-country spikes have been bulkier than track spikes, almost double the weight, often resembling stripped-down trail shoes rather than sleek racing machines. The past few years have seen developments in cross-country spikes that blow older models out of the water (or the mud). New cross-country spikes resemble the track spikes you saw flying around the track in London.
Saucony's top-selling Kilkenny XC sees sleek new colors that can show through even the nastiest covering of dirt. More substantial changes are afoot in their high-end Shay XC. The new update to Saucony's elite-level spike removes the customizable color panel of the previous version, but with it reduces a full ounce of weight. This shoe molds to the foot like a mid-distance spike, while providing protection from rocks, roots, and debris.
From Brooks, the Mach 14 also weighs in lighter than its previous versions. In a green-to-blue fade for men and a blue-to-pink fade for women, the Mach 14 has a narrower fit and more of an upturned toe than other models. New Balance has a brand new spike this season, the high-end 900. With greater tread, lighter weight, and a thinner upper, this spike is New Balance's first foray into an elite-level spike for cross-country.
For entry-level runners, Nike has one of the sleekest cushioned XC spikes on the market. The Waffle XC for men and the Jana Star XC for women boast a plush EVA midsole that provides cushion without excess weight or bulk. A seamless upper ensures a comfortable ride for runners new to the close-to-the-ground feel of spikes. And for those looking to emulate their favorite Nike athletes from London, the industry-defining Victory track spike is available in an XC-flavored version. The Victory XC is built for speed. While it may not make you into an Olympian, it just might make you feel like one. |
Amy's Gear Corner: |
Before March 13, 1977, there were no women's workout clothes. Two female friends from Arlington, VA changed all of that when they created a company that served the clothing needs of active women. No more having to wear men's shorts!
Over the past 30-years, Moving Comfort has been the go-to brand for women who want to look as good as they feel on the move. This year they've amped up their gear with a special collection called Urban Gym. It's funky, stylish and designed for your toughest workout. Wear it and show you are Fit like a Chick and proud of it!
Urban Gym Tank: A 2-in-1 tank with a relaxed fit. Featuring fabric made with S-café (recycled coffee grounds) that provides excellent moisture management and odor control. Because while we ladies sweat, we don't like to stink!
Urban Gym Tee: This tee has it all- performance and style with a great dolman-inspired look. You can even cinch the waist to customize the fit. Like it's partner tank, this tee is made with S-café to keep you fresh and dry.
Urban Gym Skirt: A Fit Woman is a Powerful Woman - especially when she works out in a skirt! This skirt is as cozy and soft as your favorite sweatshirt and looks great on its own or with a pair of leggings or compression shorts. I like wearing skirts to workouts or after races because it makes changing out of sweaty clothes discrete when you're in public.
Urban Gym Capri: Sparkle-licious! Made of space-dye fabric, this capri features Moving Comfort's signature PowerFit Band that provides flattering compression support at the waist, adjustable lower-leg gather, hidden front stash pocket, no-chafe flatlock seams and a sassy look! Pairs super well with the Gym Skirt.
Urban X-Over Bra: This bra rocks! The Urban X-Over offers support and pizzazz. It has all over mesh with splice inserts, fun straps, and stylish colors, as well as seam-free interior molded cups for modesty, adjustable criss-cross straps, encapsulation and compression. This bra is available is available in S-XL in both an A/B and C/D cup.
Cool It Hoodie: Hard to believe but fall is just a few weeks away. Time to start craving a cozy hoodie! Just in is this wonderfully soft, heather-grey French terry hoodie. It's like your boyfriend's sweatshirt only with feminine lines, big hand pockets and thumb holes. You will want to wear all the time!
Men, we didn't forget you! Just in is a refill of our favorite New Balance gear featuring Icefil fabric which actually cools your skin down by up to 5 degrees when the fabric get wets from your sweat thanks to Xylitol being woven into the fabric (yup, the same substance that makes chewing peppermint gum so refreshing!)
Icefil Short Sleeve Shirt & Singlet: Look as cool as you feel with these great tops. Both the short sleeve shirt and singlet are moisture-wicking and odor-resistant with areas of reflectivity to keep you visible in low-light conditions. The Icefil fabric feels cool and silky on your skin. Looks sharp too!
5" Run Short: Looking for a great every day "go-to" short? This is it! The 5" inseam allows for full range of motion without being too short or too long. It is made of a moisture-wicking fabric designed to pull sweat off your skin and onto the short and features a secure back zip pocket, elastic waistband with internal drawcord and a constructed crepe brief so you don't need to wear underwear.
3" Split Shorts: This sleek split short is built for speed! It is reflective and moisture wicking, keeping you safe and comfortable. And, it has N1- New Balance's new layering system the provides a soft, breathable and odor-resistant base layer to wick-away moisture during high-intensity activities. From the track to trails, this split short is versatile and ready to help you set PR's!

Kid's Running Program - Registration Open
Just Added - Zoomerangs for Kids w/Autism |
If your kids like to run, we've got a fun program just for them: Zoomerangs! This non-competitive "open track" program is designed for kids aged 4-13. It gives them the opportunity to experience running in a fun, friendly atmosphere where the motto is "Will run for worms" (gummy worms, that is!).
It's a great place for kids to run safely, correctly using good form, make friends and get stronger/build endurance so they can perform better in other sports (or rock the mile in gym class). Most of all, our goal is to empower kids to accomplish their goals and instill in them a lifelong love of running. It's also a great opportunity for mom and dad to spend quality time with your kids - and get in shape too!
Thanks to our friends at the Glastonbury River Runners, we will be again hosting a session in Glastonbury (at Smith Middle School) and one in West Hartford (at the University of Saint Joseph track). Both will meet on Sunday's at 3:30pm.
For more information or to register your child(ren), click here.

This non-competitive "open track" program is open to all ages and gives individuals with Autism the opportunity to experience running in a fun, friendly atmosphere.
Thanks to the generous support from AFC, the program fee is just $20/child. AFC will also provide experienced therapists to help with the program. Practices will be on Sunday's from 4:30-5:30pm at the College of Saint Joseph track in West Hartford beginning on September 23. Click here to register or get more information. |

Tomato & Avocado Salad
By Aubrey Schulz |

Summer meals shine in simplicity. Leave the lengthy braising and roasting cooking techniques for the imminent cooler weather. Today use your knife and not the oven to prepare a fresh summer's bounty. In five minutes, with five ingredients, you can create a stunning, flavorful tomato salad. For salad style points, arrange the tomatoes and other ingredients on a pretty platter, rather than in a bowl.
Ingredients:

- Goat cheese
- Basil, minced
- Balsamic Vinegar
- Olive Oil
- Sea Salt and Freshly ground pepper
Directions:
- Arrange the tomato slices on a platter.
- Top with avocado, crumbled goat cheese and basil.
- Drizzle balsamic vinegar and olive oil over the salad. Complete by adding salt and pepper.
- Serve.

Yoga Will Make You a Better Athlete
As an endurance athlete and a yoga teacher I can assure you that yoga will make you a better athlete. Yoga will help you gain more flexibility, strength, and balance. Spending time on a yoga mat will also help you become stronger mentally. Yoga is also a tried and true way to prevent injuries, if that yoga is done specifically for athletes. You can benefit by adding a yoga practice to your training plan by specifying your yoga practice to your training.
Yoga is typically regarding by athletes as a stretching routine - indeed, visions of Cirque De Soleil may come to mind. However, a yoga practice designed for the athlete will help lengthen and stretch tight muscles. This will promote the use of your full range of motion. Tight muscles are prone to injury, especially when we engage in activities that use repetitive motions such as swimming, biking and running. Stretching will help your body process lactate after exercise and will improve muscle oxygenation.
Yoga will also help you strengthen your body as a whole. A yoga practice for athletes involves poses that use "static holds" - such as holding your body in a push-up position - and poses that "flow" from one to the other, such as a Sun Salutations. A crucial component to strength for an athlete is your core strength. To build core strength in, you can use static holds, flowing from pose to pose, along with specifically targeted sit-ups. It is very important to practice all poses with correct alignment. This will promote joint stability by not only by strengthening the muscles in your body, but also the ligaments and tendons that are connected to those muscles.
If you're curious, come check out our class - Sundays at Fleet Feet 5.30p! Bring your skepticism! Talk to me! We are very informal. Let me know if you are a beginner, have any injuries, and where you are in your training cycle. Cost is just $10/class and a portion of the proceeds are donated to Food Share.
Meghan is a certified yoga instructor and a certifiably crazy ultra-runner (she is training for a 100-mile race this fall). Catch up with Meghan via her blog, Facebook page or Twitter (@MegColFanning). You can also email her at zendurancenow@gmail.com
Just $10/class - A portion of the proceeds will go to FoodShare
