Honor the Fallen - Run!

Run for the FallenLast week, as I was waiting for my connecting flight out of Dallas/Ft. Worth, a request for silence came over the airport PA system. The speaker went on to say that that the Marine standing by the entrance to Gate 29 was there to accompany his friend and fellow soldier, who had recently been killed in Afghanistan, on his final journey home.

Through the airport windows, I could see a hearse pull up to the plane to load the soldier's casket. For a few moments, there was complete silence in the airport as we paid our respects to the soldiers. It was a powerful reminder to all of us that although the War in Iraq is over and Osama Bin Laden is dead, our servicemen and women are still on-duty. They are still sacrificing their lives in the hope that freedom can be won for others.

Running with the FlagOne way that we can honor those who have served is by running or volunteering at this year's Run for the Fallen event on Saturday, July 28. I participated in this powerful event last year and can honestly say that running with our nation's flag and remembering all those past and present who have sacrificed their lives was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

This year, our friends Cliff Paquette and Meghan Collins Fanning (our Yoga for Runner's instructor) will be running 63km from Ellington to the Glastonbury High School Track. Each kilometer will be dedicated to one of the 63 servicemen/women from CT who has died serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Members of many of the fallen's families will be present at the track where their loved ones will be honored in a moving ceremony.

Runners are needed to form a relay team that will carry the American Flag and accompany Cliff and Meghan. There are six segments to choose from ranging from 5-11 miles. Goal pace is 10 min/mile and the group will be escorted by members of the Patriot Guard Riders and support vehicles carrying water, food and a medic. Runners will be transported to your chosen starting point so that you will end at your car.

The run begins in Tolland and will run through Vernon, Bolton, Manchester and Glastonbury. You can run as little or as much as you would like.

Volunteers are also needed for the Support Crew to help shuttle and support the runners as well as staff the ceremony at Glastonbury HS.  Click here to learn more - or email Jody Barr if you would like to be a part of this powerful event.

Schuyler's Shoe Review: 870v2

Schuyler

Minimalist running shoes are a bit like an influential band that never developed the huge fanbase of the bands that followed it. While minimalist shoes are popular with many runners, there will always be a large segment of runners who need more cushioning, stability, or heel elevation than a typical minimalist shoe offers. Even if those runners never know it, they may find themselves in a shoe heavily influenced by the minimalist movement.

New Balance 870v2 - Men The New Balance 870v2 is a moderate stability trainer that could never have existed without minimalist technologies and design elements trickling up. Like many shoes in the past year, it features a 8mm heel-to-toe offset. This is lower than the traditional 12mm, but higher than the 0-4mm drop on the average minimalist shoe. This lower heel, combined with an outsole that has full ground contact form heel to toe, means that you can strike anywhere from heel to forefoot with a smooth and natural feel.

New Balance 870v2 - Women As New Balance's second major shoe to feature its RevLite midsole foam, the 870v2 is light enough that you might worry it doesn't have enough cushion or durability. RevLite is 30% lighter than traditional midsole foam with the same resiliency. A small medial post provides stability for moderate overpronators. The seamless welded upper prevents rubbing and allows triathletes to wear the shoe barefoot.

The "in-between" nature of shoes like the 870v2 creates enormous versatility. This shoe, along with similar models like the Saucony Guide 5 or Brooks Ravenna 3, is suited to a variety of runners and walkers. Runners used to a higher stability shoe can use it as a racing shoe for marathons, while runners who want to take a step more minimal without jumping in the deep end can use it for day-to-day training. Even those who train more minimal models can use a shoe like this as a recovery day shoe. And, I promise, it won't destroy your minimalist-hipster cred. A good shoe is always a good shoe.

5 Mile Training Program - Registration Open

Starts: Saturday, July 28 @ 8am

Will Run for Fritters

The Apple Harvest 5 Mile race is one of our most-favorite races, thanks to the scrumptious apple fritters served after the run. The race is hosted by the Southington YMCA who is, once again, partnering with us to offer this great summer-into-fall training program. By popular request, Coach amy Kubisek will be back to lead this program. Her energy - and love of hills - is contagious so be ready to have some fun!

This training program is great for any runner who had recently completed at least a 5k (3.1 miles) - but is also good for those who can run a 10k (6.2 miles) and want to get faster. It begins on Saturday, July 28 at 8:00am and culminates with the Apple Harvest 5 Miler race on Sunday, September 30.

Most of the Saturday morning group runs will start/end at the Southington YMCA - though we will take a few field trips to West Hartford to run from Fleet Feet Sports so participants can take advantage of special discounts in the store on these days. There are optional runs on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm (from Fleet Feet Sports) and Thursday evenings at 6:30pm (at St. Joseph College track).

The registration fee is $100 (does not include race registration) - but does include your training plan, coaching with a low coach-to-participant ratio, a cool tech tee and other surprises along the way.  Special mini-clinics will ensure that in addition to training properly, you're given the right knowledge about footwear, socks, insoles, sports bras, hydration and other important topics that can improve your enjoyment of running

Register online or in the store.

Half Marathon Training Program

Info Meeting - Wed, July 25 @ 7pm

Starts: Saturday, July 28 @ 8am

Half Marathon = 13.1 Miles

The half marathon is the perfect distance - and the ING Hartford Half Marathon course is one of the best around as it weaves its way through West Hartford including a jaunt in Elizabeth Park. This program is appropriate for those who can run/walk 6 miles at an 11:00 mile pace (or faster) before the first practice.

Train with us and see how much fun 13.1 miles can be! Click here to register or learn more (fee is $125 and does not include the race entry fee).  Our group long runs will be on Saturday mornings.  Additionally, we will do a Tempo run on Wednesday evenings and a Track Workout on Thursday evenings.

While our goal race is the ING Hartford Half Marathon, this program is appropriate for other half marathons in October and Novemeber.

Featured Run: X-Treme Scamble

X-Treme ScrambleSometimes you just need to break away from routine and do something crazy.  For runners, that means doing one of the Hartford Marathon Foundation's Thursday night X-Treme Scrambles.

Thanks to the great support of the folks at Riverfront Recapture, Harpoon Brewery and Moe's Southwest Grill, these 5ks are not your typical road race.  No.  Sometimes you run across the bridge and down the stairs to Charter Oak Landing.  Other times you may climb over Park River, wade along the river beach or climb up the Riverfront steps.  Be warned: portions of the course might get you wet, might make you curse, might make you dirty, but will always make you smile - especially since there is cold Harpoon beer, a Moe's burrito and music waiting for you at the finish.

There are two X-Treme Scrambles left this summer: Thursday, July 26 at 6pm (theme is Kickin' off the London Olympics) and Thursday, August 23 at 6pm (swing to country music legends).  The course starts at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza.  Cost is $28 ($23 if you are a student and $10 for kids aged 5-17).

Moving Comfort Bra Fit Fest - Aug 15

Moving Comfort Fit Fest

When was the last time you purchased a real, properly-fitted sports bra? If you are like most of us, it's probably been way too long. With regular use, your sports bra should be replaced every 6-12 months, otherwise your girls aren't getting the support they need which stresses your Cooper's ligaments, leading to pre-mature sagging and back problems. Not good!

Make it a point to support your girls and join us on Wednesday, August 15 for a special sale on Moving Comfort Sports Bras. Save 10% on one bra or 20% on two or more bras - plus, you will receive $5 in Fleet Feet Bucks for each bra bought that can use be used towards any apparel purchase that day (e.g. buy three bras, get $15 to put towards that cute top you've been eyeing).

Make an appointment to get fit by one of our bra-fit experts, and we'll reward you with a gift with purchase as well! To reserve your appt, email Kristen (events@fleetfeethartford.com) or call the store at 860-233-8077.

Kids Triathlon Camp - Aug 13-18

Tri KidsThe 3rd year of Team Training New England's Kids Triathlon Camp and Race is sure to be a hit.  Tri Camp is open to children aged 6-13 and runs from 9am-12pm on August 13-18 at Eisenhower Park in West Hartford.

Campers will spend a week learning about and training for a kids-distance triathlon on Saturday, August 19 (there is even a family Triathlon Relay Race option!).  They will learn about fitness, healthy eating habits, as well as bike, swim and run skills - and have a blast conquering their goals and making new friends! For proof, watch this short video from last year's program.

If you've done a triathlon and had your kids cheering you on from the sidelines, now is the chance to switch roles!  Learn more and sign-up here!

Did you know that Fleet Feet Sports now carries kid-sized triathlon tops and bottoms?  Yeah, we do!

Summer XC Runs

for all Ages

Various Wednesday Evenings in Bolton & Newington

XC = Cross Country

Cross country courses aren't just for high schoolers, they are perfect for adults and kids of all ages.  Think nice packed dirt and grass trails with a few "rolling hills" to get your heart rate up.  Think no cars to have to be on the lookout for.  Think SHADE!

The towns of Newington and Bolton both host a summer fun cross country series open to runners of all ages.

The Bolton XC Series begins on Wednesday, June 20 and continues through August 8 (no race on July 4). They are perfect for the whole family as well as both new runners and competitive long-time runners.

The races are held on Wednesday evenings at the Bolton Heritage Farm (aka Rose Farm).  There is a toddler 100m race at 6pm (free), kids' mile at 6:10pm ($2) and a 2.3 mile race at 6:30pm ($3).  The max family charge for one night is $10. All races are off-road (no traffic!) and all profits support the Bolton High School Track Team. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the series.  For more info, click here

********

The Newington Park & Rec Dept will host their FREE fun runs on the cross country trails at John Wallace Middle School in Newington every Wednesday at 6:30pm beginning on July 11.  There will be both a 5k (3.1 miles) and a shorter 3k (about 2 miles) course.  Ribbons are awarded to all finishers.  For more info, email Jay Krusell at jaykrusell@yahoo.com

These runs are hosted in honor of Mr. Frank O'Rourke who was a longtime Newington High School XC Coach.  Participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who needs to sign the program waiver.

Both the Bolton and Newington runs are a great way for the whole family to stay in shape this summer, as well as high school runners logging their summer miles in preparation for the XC season this fall and for adults like me who want to pretend like they are in high school training for XC again.
