Staying Cool

Hot RunnerThere is nothing like a heat wave to up the challenge quotient of running. Here are some of my favorite tips for staying cool on the run:

Run Early or Late. The sun is especially potent this time of year so aim to run when the sun is below the horizon (either early morning or evening). While it may be tough to get out for an early morning run, you get the added benefit of cooler road temperatures (no fried feet!) and can enjoy the rest of your day in air conditioned luxury. Just remember to wear bright clothes and reflective gear so you're visible to autos.

Run Slow(er). Summer running is more about survival than speed. Most runners find that their pace slows 30-90 seconds per mile due to blood (and oxygen) being directed toward your skin to keep it cool - instead of to your muscles to provide power and flush out lactic acid and waste. Respect the slowdown as your body's way of protecting itself from overheating. The good news is that your efforts, despite slower times, will yield benefits once the weather cools.

Run for Cover. Running in the woods on a dry, sunny day can feel 10-20 degrees cooler than a run on the roads - the difference between running comfortably and running in a sweat box. Plus, the added challenge of hopping over rocks, roots and branches will slow your pace  and allow your body to work more efficiently.

Drink Early & Often. Your body is like a radiator that works optimally when its reservoir is full of water. While you should always carry water with you to drink and dump over your head, it is also important to hydrate throughout the day to help recover from your last run and prep your body for the next run. For added benefit, drink electrolyte-enhanced beverages like Nuun (sugar-free and only 3 calories) and stay away from caffeine and alcohol which are diuretics/dehydration accelerators.

Screen Out the Sun. Runners are at a high risk for melanoma. Protect yourself with sweat-proof sunscreen. It works - and feels - better if you apply it 30-60min before your run.

Dress Light. Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothes made of synthetics or wool (yes, wool - it's surprising cool on hot days) - no cotton! You'll be drier and more comfortable. Plus, some New Balance, Zoot and Pearl Izumi gear is made from IceFil fabric which cools the surface of your skin by a few degrees thanks to embedded Xylitol (think cool sensation in peppermint-flavored gum).

Disguise Yourself. Wear a visor or well-ventilated hat to allow heat to escape from the top of your help. Give your eyes a break by choosing hats/visors with bills that have dark undersides and/or wear sunglasses. Eye strain can increase overall body fatigue.

Be a Kid. See a water sprinkler or hose - run through it. See how many drinking fountains you can visit in a run. Run mile repeats that start/end at your house so you can soak yourself (especially your head) with a hose each break. Stuff your short pockets and sports bra with ice cubes - or get the new Cool Point hand cooler. End your run a the local pool or lake for a post-run swim - or take a cold shower. Ahhhhh

Cross-train inside...or organize your running gear and wait for cooler days.

Be Fit!

Schuyler's Shoe Review: Summer Sandals

Schuyler

You know the scene: it's a hot summer day, you just finished your long run, and after some stretching and a smoothie, you're ready to kick back and relax.  So you slip on your flip-flops, the kind with the nice soft foam, and head out to do some errands.  Your feet felt great on your run, so why are your arches starting to get sore?  Is it that old plantar fasciitis flaring up again?  All of a sudden, you aren't so sure you will even be able to run tomorrow.

Unfortunately, the care that many of us take in selecting a supportive, well-cushioned running or walking shoe does not extend to our choice of casual wear.  Among all the footwear available, the standard flip-flop is one of the least supportive.  Often these "pronation accelerators" are built with cheap foam that breaks down quickly and unevenly, with no arch and with a strap that can cause blisters and irritation.

And while you might spend an hour each day running or walking, you can easily spend a full day walking around in a flip-flop that fails to support your foot. Fortunately, we carry sandals from Montrail and Superfeet that are actually GOOD for your feet!

Montrail Lithia SandalsMontrail's Lithia sandal provides a supportive platform to keep your feet healthy, comfortable and cool all summer long.  The full-length Integrafit footbed is comfortable out of the box, cradling the foot and providing support for the arch and fascia tissue.  If strong initial support is not enough, you can customize the sandal by heating it in the oven and molding it to your foot.  The Gryptonite outsole ensures traction on a variety of surfaces from the mall to the beach.

Superfeet SandalsSuperfeet's sandal is built on their patented Superfeet Green Insole, the most supportive option in their line.  The integrated deep heel cup offers more shock absorption than foamy flips and the midfoot shank, similar to that of a running shoe, provides torsional rigidity necessary for plantar fasciitis and other injuries. The sandal is treated with Agion antimicrobial coating to prevent odor and bacteria from developing and is made with EcoPure, a foam that biodegrades fifty times faster than standard foam in a landfill.

Whether you are recovering from an injury, hoping to avoid a future one, or simply want the most comfortable, supportive causal summer footwear around, upgrade your flips. Your feet will thank you!

Amy's Gear Corner:

Elisabethan ShirtElisabethan Eco-Fashion T's: These fabulous handmade tee's are a super cute way to show the world your accomplishments! Designer and recycler extraordinaire (and Dartmouth grad), Elisabeth Delehaunty, makes these tees in her Colorado studio from reclaimed t-shirts and adorns them flower, 13.1 or 26.2 appliques and funky 3/4-length striped sleeves. Each shirt is one-of-a-kind, pre-washed and destined to become one of your favorites. Limited quantities available!

T-Shirt DriveElisabeth needs our help restocking her stash of "experienced textiles". This summer our goal is to collect 100 cotton tees in good, USABLE condition (no fading, holes, stains or tech tees) that will be used to create future shirts. Particularly desired are solid or shirts with great prints or stripes. The bigger, the better. Favorite colors are hot pink, grass green, turquois and neutrals. Everyone who donates a tee will be entered into a drawing to win a FREE Elisabethan tee, plus we'll donate $50 to the charity of your choice!

Cool PointCool Point: This product is cool - literally! To run safe in hot temperatures, you need to stay as cool as possible. Scientific studies show that performance, pace-setting and fatigue is all guided by signals to the brain. Cooling your hands (your body's natural radiator) stimulates thermoregulation signals to the brain which has been proven to improve athletic performance and delay fatigue.

But ice cubes don't cut it for long when it's really hot. Enter Cool Point - an innovative product that chills your palm for up to 60 minutes. It is lightweight (under 5oz), doesn't distract from your normal running motion, durable and recyclable. Steph has been product testing it for the past two weeks and has been impressed by how well it works, despite her early skepticism. Check out this video from the CapTexTri.

Saucony Hydralyte TeesHydralite Tops (men): Testers agree- this Saucony-favorite is fantastic for hot weather running! It is ultra lightweight (100gm) and features a breathable grid construction for superior moisture management. Whether you choose the singlet or the short-sleeve shirt, you will feel like you're running shirtless. Made from recycled materials, it's environmentally friendly too!

Pearl Izumi SkirtRed Running Skirt (women): We have the perfect skirt for your 4th of July festivities and the Red Dress Run. This fashionable and functional skirt from Pearl Izumi has a side split that allows for full range of motion, longer inseam than most running skirts, inner brief (no compression short ride-up!) and flattering wide waistband with stretch draw cord for extra comfort. We love the easy access back envelope pocket and interior pockets for gels. It even has reflective elements for low-light visibility!

Run for the Fallen - Needs Runners!
Run for the FallenThere is perhaps no better way to honor those who have served in the past and present then by running or volunteering at this year's Run for the Fallen event on Saturday, July 28. I participated in this amazing, well-organized event last year and can honestly say that carrying our flag, running with Cliff and remembering all those past and present who have sacrificed their lives was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

This year, our friends Cliff Paquette and Meghan Collins Fanning (our Yoga for Runner's instructor) will be running 63km from Ellington to the Glastonbury High School Track. Each kilometer will be dedicated to one of the 63 servicemen/women from CT who has died serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Members of many of the fallen's families will be present at the track where their loved ones will be honored in a moving ceremony.

CliffRunners are needed to form a relay team that will carry the American Flag and accompany Cliff and Meghan. There are six segments to choose from ranging from 5-11 miles. Goal pace is 10 min/mile and the group will be escorted by members of the Patriot Guard Riders and support vehicles carrying water, food and a medic. Runners will be transported to your chosen starting point so that you will end at your car.

Towns that the run will travel through include: Tolland, Vernon, Bolton, Manchester and Glastonbury. You can run as little or as much as you would like.

Volunteers are also needed for the Support Crew to help shuttle and support the runners as well as staff the ceremony at Glastonbury HS.

Click here to learn more - or email Jody Barr if you would like to be a part of this amazing event.
Become a Girls on the Run SoleMate

Girls on the RunGirls on the Run is an international program that blends running and physical activity into a 24-lesson curriculum designed to promote positive emotional, social and physical development among girls in grades 3-8.

While there is no GOTR chapter in CT (yet!), the chapter in Boston is recruiting SoleMates to join them in running the ING Hartford Marathon, half marathon and 5k while raising money for this wonderful program. As a SoleMate, you will have access to coaching and group training. The program is open to both men and women.

Watermelon Salad w/Goat Cheese

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out & Play - & Soak-up Vitiman D

One of the necessities of summer barbeques is the presence of watermelon. Who can resist reaching for a slice of refreshing watermelon?  It is also a delight to see watermelon as an option at the post-race food table. With its high water content, it helps to replenish those lost liquids.

One cup of watermelon has only 48 calories. It is an excellent source of Vitamin C and the antioxidant lycopene. This salad is perfect to serve at your Independence Day picnic.

Watermelon Salad with Goat Cheese

Ingredients:

  • 1 small watermelon, rind and seeds removed and chopped into 1 inch pieces
  • 1 cucumber, peeled, seeds removed and chopped
  • ½ cup goat cheese
  • 1 sprig of lemon verbena
  • ¼ cup or less of olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ cup unsalted pistachios
  • Sea salt (my fav is Fleur de Sel)

Directions:

  1. Add the lemon verbena leaves to a mortar and pestle and grind them up, bruising the leaves.
  2. Transfer to a separate container and add in the olive oil. Let it sit for about an hour.
  3. Combine the watermelon and cucumber in a large bowl. Refrigerate until just before serving.
  4. Crumble the goat cheese over the salad.
  5. Add the lemon juice to the lemony olive oil. Pour over the salad and gently toss.
  6. Just before serving garnish with pistachios and a sprinkle of sea salt.

Substitutions: Lemon verbena is not readily available in the supermarkets. Mint leaves are an alternate, albeit different tasting, option.

Summer XC Runs

for all Ages

Various Wednesday Evenings in Bolton & Newington

XC = Cross Country

Cross country courses aren't just for high schoolers, they are perfect for adults and kids of all ages.  Think nice packed dirt and grass trails with a few "rolling hills" to get your heart rate up.  Think no cars to have to be on the lookout for.  Think SHADE!

The towns of Newington and Bolton both host a summer fun cross country series open to runners of all ages.

The Bolton XC Series begins on Wednesday, June 20 and continues through August 8 (no race on July 4). They are perfect for the whole family as well as both new runners and competitive long-time runners.

The races are held on Wednesday evenings at the Bolton Heritage Farm (aka Rose Farm).  There is a toddler 100m race at 6pm (free), kids' mile at 6:10pm ($2) and a 2.3 mile race at 6:30pm ($3).  The max family charge for one night is $10. All races are off-road (no traffic!) and all profits support the Bolton High School Track Team. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the series.  For more info, click here

********

The Newington Park & Rec Dept will host their FREE fun runs on the cross country trails at John Wallace Middle School in Newington every Wednesday at 6:30pm beginning on July 11.  There will be both a 5k (3.1 miles) and a shorter 3k (about 2 miles) course.  Ribbons are awarded to all finishers.  For more info, email Jay Krusell at jaykrusell@yahoo.com

These runs are hosted in honor of Mr. Frank O'Rourke who was a longtime Newington High School XC Coach.  Participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who needs to sign the program waiver.

Both the Bolton and Newington runs are a great way for the whole family to stay in shape this summer, as well as high school runners logging their summer miles in preparation for the XC season this fall and for adults like me who want to pretend like they are in high school training for XC again.

The Stephen Taber

Come sail Maine's gorgeous Penobscot Bay with us! The trip will be led by our Events Manager, Kristen, and her husband Dave. While the Taber is a National Historic Landmark, it has been updated with modern amenities like electricity, running water, bathrooms and cozy private cabins. The all-inclusive trip fee is $788.

Perhaps the best feature on board is a vintage woodstove that produces five-star meals at the hands of a talented chef.  We're talking handmade breads, soups, risotto, gnocchi, roasts and delectable deserts - complemented by fresh ingredients from local gardens and the sea and perfectly paired wines.  Their motto is to error on the side of decadence.  It's no wonder Rachel Ray is a huge fan!

To be tempted even more, check out the Stephen Taber's web site.  Call Captain Jane at 1-800-999-7352 or email info@stephentaber.com to reserve your spot on the Fleet Feet Sports Running Cruise.
