Recently, three of my favorite FF Peeps were diagnosed with cancer. In each case, my breath was taken away not only by the awful news, but also because of the poise, strength and positiveness they exuded when they told me. Each of them spoke of their cancer as a bump in the road, a bump they planned to overcome. Having seen each of them train for - and successfully complete - a half marathon last year, I have no doubts that they will run right over that "bump" and come out even stronger on the other side.
Like the runners they are, they are each approaching their treatment plan as if they were training for an endurance event. They have consulted the experts, put together a support team and understand that there will be some tough times that will require extra mental and physical fortitude. Fortitude they know they have because they tapped into it on many a long run. That knowledge creates a confidence that will give them a huge advantage in the fight of their lives.
And like the runners they are, they all plan to keep moving during their treatment and are making plans for their "comeback race". They are not going to let the cancer define them. Instead, people who don't know they are sick will probably continue to define them as one of those crazy runners.
Having struggled with the effects of Lupus, I know how empowering being able to run (even slowly) can be when you're fighting a disease. It makes you feel normal and complete. Melissa Etheridge says it best in her song "I Run for Life". A song she wrote to describe her own experience battling breast cancer and explains why she runs:
I run for hope I run to feel I run for the truth For all that is real I run for your mother, your sister, your wife I run for you and me, my friend I run for life
Our hearts and prayers go out to our cancer-fighting Peeps and everyone who is fighting to overcome a bump in their road. And if you need a little motivation this week, honor Mary (one of our fighters) by heeding her advice: "Be strong, think positive and run when you can!"
Be Fit,

Schuyler's Shoe Review: Newton MV2 |
Newton Running shoes are a unique option for runners looking to transition to a more natural running form. Not only do the shoes encourage a more natural midfoot landing, but with improved form a single pair can last for over 1,000 miles. As great as there features are, many runners who want to work on their form still use a racing flat due to its light weight and fast feel. A new shoe from Newton offers the best of both worlds.
At 5.5 ounces, the Newton MV2 is Newton's first foray into racing flats, but that isn't the shoe's only first. The shoe is "zero-drop," meaning that there is no drop in height from the heel to the toe. While other Newton shoes have features a low 3mm-4mm drop (compared to a typical shoe's 12mm), this shoe is totally flat. For runners who are still transitioning, the shoe includes an optional 3mm lift. Simply insert this in the heel and you have a shoe with the profile of many other minimalist shoes.
The MV2 is also the first Newton shoe to feature a 5-lug forefoot pattern. Unlike their usual 4-lug pattern, this allows the lugs to go all the way to the side of the shoe. Greater forefoot contact creates a faster, more responsive feel when you use the shoe to run fast in a workout or race.
The MV2 represents a racing and workout option for runners already in Newtons. Runners already using a racing flat might find that it offers everything they love about their current flats with a more natural feel. Its zero-drop profile makes the shoe ideal for CrossFit, P90X, and other lateral-agility activities. Whatever your use, you'll have all the energy you need in the MV2.
Learn more about this great shoe in Schuyler's interview with our Newton Guru, Mike. |
Amy's Gear Corner |
Warmer temperatures got you thinking about shorts and tees? Nike's Spring '12 Apparel will be arriving in store late this week. Shorts, shirts, capris, skapri's (skirt+capri) and racing outfits in great new colors!
Brooks Infinity Hybrid Wind Shirt (Men & Woman): While we haven't had to deal with many bitter cold days, Mother Nature has made up for it with windy conditions - and with spring around the corner, we know there is plenty more wind to come! This shirt is perfect for those days thanks to its windproof front panel and sleeves. In fact, the fabric is windproof for up to 30mph! But unlike some thick, crinkly windproof fabric in other gear, this fabric is super soft, quiet and comfy. The top also features thumbholes, reflectivity, front zipper for added breathability and stretch-mesh under the arms so you have full range of motion. Outrun the wind!
Shock Absorber Bras: Last fall, Christine Lee from 96.5 WTIC-FM discovered this sports bra that is not only comfortable but reduces bounce by up to 78% thanks to their unique "Infinity-8" support system developed in response to research showing that breasts move in a Figure-8 pattern with movement in four directions (up, down, sideways and diagonal). This repetitive movement can strain your Cooper ligaments (which can lead to sagging) as well as cause irritation and chafing. Shock Absorber bras have been scientifically proven to reduce bounce by up to 78%.
We currently carry two styles: Shock Absorber Run Bra and the Maximum Support Sports Bra. Both high-impact rated bras feature adjustable backs and shoulder straps (no over-the-head struggles!) and are made with a soft, moisture-wicking fabric that is breathable and high-performance. Band sizes are available in 32-38 and cup sizes run from C-F.
Bondi Band Wicking Neck Gators: New from the designers of the wonderful Bondi Band: neck gators! With their bright colors and patterns and generous length, they are fun, fashionable and functional! Like the Survivor buff's, you can wear them around your neck for warmth and wind-protection, as a headband or over your ears, head and mouth for an additional weather barrier. These gators dry fast, but are best for light sweat wicking
Brooks Gossamer Glove: I can't stand running with bulky gloves, especially during this year's gentle winter. This versatile glove is great by itself on cool mornings and can be layered with a thicker glove or mitten on cold days. Testers like the reflectivity too that this glove offers. Best of all, these gloves can be stowed together in a built-in pocket with a magnet closure, so once your hands warm up, you can simply fold them into their pocket and stow in your jacket or vest pocket and not have to worry about losing a glove. Love it!
WIN High-Performance Sport Liquid Detergent: It's back! After a two-year absence, WIN Detergent is back on the market and ready to tackle your stinkiest workout clothes. This detergent is so good that it's used at the US Olympic Training Centers! WIN uses a scientifically formulated formula that targets embedded odors by oxidizing the offensive odors and stains to remove even embedded sweat molecules that cause stinky workout clothes. Several tests indicate that WIN outperforms competing detergents and is safe and gentle for all fabrics and colors. |
Video Gaith & Peformance Analysis Services | We are pleased to partner with Select Physical Therapy and Pursuit Athletic Performance to offer video gait and movement analysis using sophisticated motion analysis software and hands-on examinations. Currently, we have four options available:
1.) Simple Video Gait Analysis (free - as part of our normal Shoe Fit Process).
2.) Baseline Dartfish Video Gait Analysis ($25) - recommended for those who aren't experiencing problems right now and want a video record of what their biomechanics look like when they are healthy (great to have on-file for comparison purposed before you change shoes, running style or get injured).
3.) In-depth Dartfish Analysis ($150) - recommended for those who are injured and want to determine if their injury is being caused or aggravated by their biomechanics. Things like leg length discrepancies or muscle imbalances and weaknesses may be discovered.
4.) Premium Movement Analysis ($295 - includes a $50 Fleet Feet gift certificate) - This comprehensive analysis peformed by Coach Al and Dr. Strecker of Pursuit Athletic Performance combines functional movement analysis, with a muscle and joint screening and a super-detailed video gait analysis. It is recommended for anyone actively training, especially if they are injured or have a desire to get faster or train better by becoming more efficient. It is not a "one and done" analysis as there will be follow-up exercises and a plan for improving functional strength and movement.iencies and developing a strong core |

Millet - A Gluten-free Food
By Aubrey Schulz |
Looking for another gluten free whole grain to add to your repertoire? Have you tried millet? Yes, millet is a common ingredient in bird seed, but it is not "for the birds". Millet is a tiny yellow circular grain. It can be creamy like mashed potatoes or fluffy like rice.
Before cooking millet, like all grains, it is wise to rinse it under running water in a fine meshed sieve. The holes in most colanders are too big and the grain will be washed down the sink. Be sure to select your kitchen tool wisely. Cook one part millet with 2.5 parts water in boiling water. Turn down the heat and simmer covered for 25 minutes. This makes a fluffy version of millet.
To make a creamier version, stir the millet frequently, adding a little more water each time.
Like most grains, it is useful to cook up a larger batch and use the leftovers during the week.
Consider cooked millet as a breakfast porridge along with nuts and dried fruits. Add chopped veggies, perhaps some chicken or tofu, and a dressing to create a simple salad, or perfect recovery meal.
Use the following recipe as a starting point for a wonderful one pot meal.
Eggplant Coconut Curry (Serves 2-3)
Ingredients:
● 1 eggplant, cubed
● 1 can garbanzos, drained
● 1 can coconut milk
● 1 cup cooked millet
● 4 garlic cloves, pressed or minced
● 1/3 cup dried prunes (or raisins or apricots)
● 1 tsp cinnamon (or garam masala would be great too)
● 1/2 tsp curry powder
● 1/4 tsp paprika
● Sea salt, to taste
Heat pot to medium-high. Add oil and brown eggplant for 5 minutes.
Add water to slightly steam if necessary.
Add garlic and saut for 1 minute.
Add garbanzos, coconut milk, millet, prunes and spices. Stir.
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
