My Thanksgiving List

Thank YouAs much as I look forward to the delicious Thanksgiving feast followed (almost immediately) by my traditional Thanksgiving nap, one of the best aspects of this holiday is giving pause for all the reasons I have to be thankful. This year, I am especially...

Thankful for my wonderful staff, who despite the banging, incessant dust and constant moving of products caused by the renovations, have never complained or provided less than their typical amazing level of service. Day in, day out, they energize the store with their personalities and knowledge and are always going the extra mile to help you find the best fit so you can live fit comfortable and injury-free. They make the store a fun place to be!

Thankful for all of you loyal customers have also braved the organized chaos of the build-out and made the decision to shop local even in today's tough economy - and for recommending us to your family, friends and colleagues. It is because of your business, past, present and future, that we are able to expand our store and make it even better. Our design goal for the new store is to make it feel like a community clubhouse where everyone, young and old, fit and not-so-fit, feels welcomed and inspired. I can't wait for you to come see it on December 3!

Thankful for my general contractor Marc and his hard-working team (including Chris, Phil, Billy, Mason and Nelson) who took a 90-day renovation plan and shortened it to 45 days so we could be open in time for the holidays. I can't say enough about this crew. Their work ethic and product is top notch. I think I'm actually going to miss them when they're gone.

Thankful for my family and friends for their endless love, support and patience. Without them, I wouldn't be me. They make me laugh, keep me going when times get tough, bring me chocolate, pick-up the slack when I get behind, teach me to delegate, kick my butt on a run, don't let stress get the best of me, and enable me to enjoy what I do every day.

Wishing you a Thanksgiving full of delicious food, good friends...and an endorphin-filled run!

Be Fit,

Steph

Schuyler's Shoe Review:

Schuyler

As runners, we all live in fear of shoe updates forcing us to find a new favorite shoe. We spend years running in a model that we grow to love, and a single version update can leave us (or at least our feet) homeless. And as much as I love to celebrate exciting new shoes, occasionally we see an update that isn't quite what we want. Case in point was the 2011 versions of Mizuno's neutral Wave Rider 14 and moderate stability Wave Inspire 7 whose alterations of a heal tab and wider forefoot left some long-time fans on the hunt for a new favorite.

Mizuno Wave Rider 15Thankfully, the new Wave Inspire 8 and Wave Rider 14 correct the slight overcompensations to create a really nice update.  As a result, long-time fans who were put off by the 2011 changes will find the newest versions comfortable and familiar.  Fans of the Inspire 8 and Rider 14 will find a shoe with all those features and a more dialed-in fit. Finally, fans of lightweight, streamlined neutral shoes in general will be pleased with the new models that combine the best of both worlds.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 8While the innovative separate heel tab remains, it has been lowered a slight amount to prevent heel slippage without digging in. The forefoot is still higher volume than two or more years ago, but now it is a slight increase that should accommodate the widest range of feet. Finally, the heel and forefoot heights have been returned to where they were, making the two shoes just slightly lower-profile and lighter weight than your average trainer. As a bonus, the shoes are available in cool, bold colors, as if they are Mizuno's way of saying "welcome back" to fans of any version.

Amy's Gear Corner

Don't know what to get your favorite athlete or weekend warrior this holiday season? Here are some of my favorite items:

Holiday Wish List

Timex Ironman Run Trainer GPS:This new watch from Timex is top-of-the-line, except for the price: $190 without heartrate, $230 with heartrate PLUS there is a $50 rebate through Dec 31. This watch has all the features you expect like average pace, current speed, distance, five display options (each with up to four data windows), 2-workout memory and a performance pacer to help you meet your time goals. I use a GPS watch to ensure my workouts are more consistent and my pace right there for important races.

CEP CLONE Compression: The faster you recover, the harder you can train. These custom-made compression tights regenerate your legs by exposing your muscles to more oxygen and nutrients and penetrating deep veins to flush out lactic acid and waste. Schuyler, Duncan and I are one of the few certified CLONE Fit Specialists in New England. Come in and we'll take 41 precise measurements so CEP can custom weave two pairs of medical-grade compression tights for you. I wore mine after my Ironman and was really satisfied with how well and quickly my legs recovered.

Tifosi Sunglasses: Sunglasses aren't just for the summer. Whether you run, bike, play golf, tennis or another outdoor sport, they can help you perform year-round. These stylin' glasses are available in men, women and kids' sizes and cost around $50. We love Tifosi because there glasses can satisfy the discerning elite athlete to the weekend warrior - staffer Kate loves them because they look cool!

Mizuno-Breathe Thermo Gloves: I don't like big, bulky gloves - but I hate cold hands even more. Enter these gloves from Mizuno - thin but very warm thanks to the amazing Breath Thermo material that wicks and warms at the same time. Genius!

Sweaty-Bands: OMG, they don't slip!  These headbands are the best! Super cute and highly functional - you won't have to deal with flyaways when you wear this stylish headband that can handle any workout you throw at it. A new shipment of bands just arrived - everything from solids to playful patters to a turkey-themed one!

Darn Tough VT Socks: You'll be darn tough wearing these socks! Whether you prefer the thin mesh or the thicker cushion, your feet will be dry and comfy all year long. They make great socks for skiing, snowshoeing and in a care package for your favorite soldier.

Wooly-White Superfeet: Tis' the season for Uggs, slippers and other cozy footwear that are known to flare plantar fasciitis. But slide in a pair of these fuzzy Merino wool inserts and your feet will get the support they need and the coziness they deserve. Ahhh...

Foot Rubz: This little ball, that looks like a dog toy is one of the best foot massage tools I have ever used. Gently roll the 172 stimulating fingers under your foot for fast relief. It's the perfect stocking stuffer or teacher gift. And at only $5, it's easy on your wallet too!.

The Grid: Give the gift of a daily massage - without having to pay a masseuse. This staff and customer favorite is the ultimate foam roller. The PVC cylinder base is wrapped with a proprietary distro-desnsity foam with special raised surfaces that mimic the palm and fingers of a human hand. Also available are DVD's showing you how to use it for the ultimate core workout. And it's compact size, makes it highly portable!

Fleet Feet Sports Gift Card:  The perfect gift when you don't know what your loved one needs!  Gift cards are available in any amount (how about $26.20 for your marathoner?) and can be redeamed in any Fleet Feet in the USA.  Get your cards in the store or order over the phone.

Featured Races - Mitten Run

Mitten Run LogoJoin our No Boundaries graduates and fellow Fleet Feet Peeps during this great community run around Blue Back Square.  The race will be held rain, snow or shine (we're hoping for the shine).

The Kids Fun Runs (1/2 mile and 1 mile options) will begin at 10:00am, followed by the 5k at 10:30am.  The course begins near Town Hall and winds through the wide avenues of West Hartford, past festive shop windows and neighborhoods decorated for the season.  It finishes in the center of Blue Back Square in the open area between Cheesecake Factory and the library.

The race is expected to have over 1,500 runners so plan on leaving early for the race to find parking.  You can also save time by picking up your packet at the West Hartford Town Hall (50 South Main Street) from 2-5pm on Saturday, December 3. Registration fee is $28 for the 5k ($30 after Nov 29) and $10 for the kids run. Registration includes a cotton long-sleeve t-shirt, but you can upgrade your shirt to a long-sleeve tech tee for an additional $25.

The race also collects NEW mittens, gloves, hats and scarves that are donated to the less fortunate through the "Town That Cares Fund".  Drop off your donation in the collection boxes at packet pick-up & help your neighbors stay warm this winter!

Brussels Sprouts that Taste GOOD!

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out & Play - & Soak-up Vitiman D

I recently prepared and served Roasted Brussel Sprouts with Grapes at a cooking workshop.

My intent was to introduce a healthy, colorful Thanksgiving side dish to the attendees. The most common response was surprise...followed by, "Can I have some more?". For many, brussels sprouts are shunned, but this recipe roasts the vegetables to bring out their natural sweetness. Pairing vegetables and fruit further elevates the sweetness and the appeal of the veggies.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and may some delicious veggies make their way onto your plate.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 pounds Brussels Sprouts, trimmed and halved

  • 1 pound red seedless grapes

  • 3 T olive oil

  • 2 Cloves garlic, sliced

  • 1 T fresh thyme leaves

  • Sea salt and black pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 375F
  2. On a large rimmed baking sheet, toss the Brussels sprouts and grapes with the oil, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper.
  3. Turn the Brussels sprouts so the cut side is down and roast until golden brown and tender, 20 to 25 minutes.

Meet-Up Group logo

Every Saturday we will open our doors at 9am to runners and walkers looking to meet-up with others.  We will have a place to hold your keys and change of clothes, as well as provide a bathroom, water and a book of routes ranging from 1-18 miles for you to select from.  Our goal is to help match people of similar paces and training distances so no one has to run alone.

There is no charge to participate in the Meet-Up.  If you already have a group of friends you run with, you can still take advantage of using Fleet Feet Sports as your meeting location from anytime between 8-10am.
