Touch Your Toes

Rich Can Touch His Toes! For all of you who read this newsletter and think, "I can't do that, I'm too old", look no further than staffer Rich.

Rich was retired when I first met him. He had caught the running bug a few years prior, but wanted to run a half marathon so he signed-up for our Iron Horse Half Marathon training program in 2009. Unfortunately, he was sidelined with hamstring problems and couldn't run. Despite that, he would still come to the Saturday morning practice and hang out in the store while everyone ran. Like any smart businesswoman, I figured if he really wanted to hang out in the store and be surrounded by runners and products, that I'd put him to work!

Rich joined our team later that summer. While his curiosity for understanding every shoe's function and fit led him to create an in-depth Shoe Matrix that has become a key resource for new-hires, Rich's passion for being part of the running community inspired him to join our coaching ranks. He now manages our entire training program and can usually be found running the streets of West Hartford on Saturday mornings encouraging our participants and helping them realize their running dreams. Along the way, he realized his dream of running a half-marathon which he completed with his daughter-in-law, Tara.

But there was always one fitness goal that has eluded Rich: touching his toes. To say that Rich's muscles are tight is an understatement. On a good day, he could barely touch his knees. As part of our No Boundaries program, the participants are treated to a cross-training clinic and workout at Anytime Fitness lead by Trainer Jen. Instead of ribbing Rich about his lack of flexibility, she confidently predicted that she could help him touch his toes. The bet was on and Rich started working out with Jen twice a week.

With each passing week, Rich became a little more flexible - and a whole lot stronger. His running improved to the point where he kept right up with me on a tough 12 mile trail run in the Reservoir. If that wasn't progress enough, he sent the photo shown above to me the other day. Yup, that's Rich, touching his toes!

It was more proof that we're never too old to accomplish our fitness goals. Whether you want to run a 5k, a marathon or even just touch your toes, anything is possible. Yes, it may take a little more time and more focus than when we were young, but you can do it And when you do, post your picture on our Facebook page to share your success - and inspire others to realize they can too!

Be Fit,

Steph

Schuyler's Shoe Review - Newton Shoes

Schuyler in his Vibrams

Sir Isaac Newton may have revolutionized celestial physics over three hundred years ago, but today he is still revolutionizing physics in a different way: running shoes. Newton running shoes are neither traditional nor minimalist. They bridge the gap with a new movement that can be considered midfoot-forefoot running or, as Newton founder Danny Abshire's book coins it, Natural Running.

Newton's Gravity ModelMinimalist footwear allows your foot to move more barefoot-like by lowering the heel-toe height, increasing flexibility and decreasing cushion. Newton shoes start with a more traditional heel/toe height and raise the forefoot up with Land-Lever-Lift technology. This creates an ultimate ratio similar to that of minimalist shoes. The forefoot pad is hollowed out, allowing for amazing energy return. An ideal midfoot strike involves landing near the metatarsals, allowing the heel to touch down, and then using the elastic action of the achilles tendon to spring back up. Newton Running shoes allow this movement with maximum energy return.

For runners new to natural running, the Sir Isaac and Lady Isaac offer a stiffer midfoot with more guidance for your foot. Even though anyone should make a gradual transition into a new type of footwear, this shoe is a little more structured for beginners.

Newton's Lady IssacRunners who are already natural midfoot strikers and want a lighter, more flexible option can look at the Gravitas. Boasting the same general fit and feel of the Sir and Lady Isaac, the Gravitas weighs in two ounces lighter. It lacks the plastic midfoot shank of the Isaac, making it a much more flexible shoe. This means that the shoe forces your foot less while allowing more natural movement.

Either Newton option can be used on its own, as long as you build up gradually. Once you perfect your footstrike, you can expect to get 1,000+ miles from your shoes (traditional running shoes usually last 300-500 miles). Additionally, many runners rotate it in with a more traditional running shoe to help improve form. Some minimalist runners will also rotate the Newton in with their minimalist shoes for higher mileage days.

Regardless of how you use your Newtons, remember Newton's second law: an object in motion will remain in motion. Get started running, and it's hard to stop.

Kids Running Program - Registeration Open
ZoomerangsIf your kids like to run, we've got a fun program just for them: Zoomerangs!

Now in our 7th season, this non-competitive "open track" program is designed for kids aged 4-13. It gives them the opportunity to experience running in a fun, friendly atmosphere where the motto is "Will run for worms" (gummy worms, that is!).

It's a great place for kids to run safely, correctly using good form, make friends and get stronger/build endurance so they can perform better in other sports (or rock the mile in gym class). Most of all, our goal is to empower kids to accomplish their goals and instill in them a lifelong love of running. It's also a great opportunity for mom and dad to spend quality time with your kids - and get in shape too!

The fall edition of our popular program begins on Sunday, September 25 at 4:30pm. All practices take place at the Saint Joseph College Track and last about 45 minutes. After a group warm-up (stretches, form drills and running games), kids will be encouraged to run at their own pace and run as many laps as they feel comfortable running. Our goal is to have kids run/walk 4 laps (1 mile) each practice - though, by the end of the season many kids are running 2-4 miles - and still smiling at the end!

The program will culminate with the Little Manchester Road Race On Saturday, November 19 in Manchester, CT. This race features a 1/2 mile, 1 mile and 2 mile course.

The program cost is $50 per child and includes a Zoomerang Team t-shirt, Little Manchester Road Race entry and sweathshirt, gummy-worms, "lap rewards" and "Track or Treat" (a special Halloween celebration that includes trick-or-treating around the track for healthy snacks and fun loot).

Tunnel to Towers 5k Run/Walk:

On September 11, 2001, a Brooklyn-based off duty firefighter and father of five heard the call to action. When his truck was prohibited from entering the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, he raced on foot towards the site with his gear strapped to his back to meet-up with his company en-route to the Towers. The Tunnel to Towers run is dedicated in the memory, and in honor of all who serve our communities and nation with the courage and commitment exemplified by Stephen Siller.

The Middlesex County Blue Star Mothers have organized a local version of the Tunnel-to-Towers 5k here in CT. The run will take place on Saturday, September 10 at 9:30am in Cromwell. The registration fee is $30 and includes a t-shirt. Register online here.

Bob Villette's 5kBob Veillette 5k:

Meet and run with legendary marathoner Bill Rodgers at the annual Bob Veillette 5k Road Race and 1 Mile Walk on Sunday, September 11.  The run/walk begins at 1:30pm at Library Park (corner of Grand and Meadow streets) in Waterbury.

Register online by September 8 and the entry fee for the run and walk is just $20 for adults and $10 for kids under 12.  On race day, the fees go up $5.  T-shirts and goody bag are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Click here to register online.

All funds raised by this event go toward defraying ongoing medical expenses for Naugatuck resident Bob Veillette, 64, a former runner, journalist and jazz pianist who suffered a massive stroke in 2006 that left him paralyzed from the nose down. Like Rodgers, Veillette loved to run the Litchfield Hills Road Race and did so annually before his stroke. Veillette even met Rodgers at the LHRR in the 1980's.

In addition to running the 5k, Rodgers will be on hand to meet participants and sign autographs. There will also be plenty of kid-friendly activities including a bounce-house, face painting and an arts-and-crafts tent.  Since the race is occurring on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 Terrorists Attacks, there will be a special ceremony to commemorate the day and, at Bob's request, donations will be collected on behalf of the National 9/11 Memorial.

Good Form Running

U.S. Olympian Grant Robison

We are excited to announce that Olympian Grant Robison and Matthew Capstick from New Balance will be coming to the store on Monday, September 19 to lead a FREE Good Form Running Clinic from 7-8:00pm.

Good Form Running was born out of the simple insight that most runners, from the occasional jogger to an elite athlete, were never taught how to run. It was first developed by Curt Munson, owner of Playmaker sports (a running specialty store in MI) who, after being chronically injured, realized that no one practices running.

Overstriding, heel striking, and bad posture are all things that cause a runner to exert more effort, and possibly cause injury due to increased strain. So, working together, Curt and Grant broke running form down into four simple, but highly effective points that can help transform anyone into a more efficient, healthy runner.

During this one hour clinic, you will learn those four key points and practice implementing them with fun drills. The clinic is open to everyone - no matter your experience level or pace. It's sure to be one of the most valuable clinics we have ever offered so mark your calendar today!
