The Secret to Summer Running... |
As I finished my run on the Reservoir trails this morning, I passed a dog that was also finishing his workout. His fur was frizzy, he was panting heavily and his tongue was hanging way out of his mouth. He looked exactly how I felt. Yup, the dog days of summer are here!
I will admit to not being much of a summer runner. I can handle some heat, but I hate the high humidity. It feels like I am trying to breathe through straws; never getting enough oxygen to fill my lungs. Even on my easy runs, I breathe hard. And then there is the sweat - copious amounts pour from every pore in my body. After an hour run last week, you could wring out my shirt, and my hat was dripping water like a faucet. It looked like I had run in the rain.
Fortunately, August isn't prime racing season for most of us. It's more a time to build-up our foundation for the fall. Pace isn't as important as just getting out there and running (or walking). I like to think of it as making a deposit in my Bank of Fitness. The small weekly deposits may not seem like a lot individually, but in a couple of months, there will be a sweet payoff. Sometimes you get a glimpse of the payoff when Mother Nature surprises us with a cool, non-humid summer day and you feel like you could just run forever.
Knowing that I'm not going to be breaking any records, I have been trying to get into a different mindset - relax a bit more, enjoy the scenery or company, take a different route, walk if I really feel out of rhythm. Lynne Tapper, tri coach and co-founder of Team Training New England, reminded me the other day about two key ingredients that every run should include: deep breathing (not heavy breathing, but relaxed, cleansing breaths that allow more oxygen to get to your muscles and brain) and smiling. Yup, smiling! If it always feels like work, it's becomes more of a mental challenge to get out and run.
Yes, there are times when you need a tough workout, but more times than not, you should enjoy your time on the run (or in the gym or on the field). That means not exercising in what Sally Edwards called the Black Hole in her book Be a Better Runner. Sally recommends that 80% of our runs be "easy" and 10-20% be "very hard" (based on heartrate threshold values). Unfortunately, most of us run in that in-between "Black Hole" zone - too hard to be easy and too easy to hit the "very hard" threshold.
Contrary to popular belief, research proves that running in that Black Hole is not very productive. Runners who trained 80% of the time in the easy zone, improved 26% more than runners who ran in the Black Hole. And you can bet the easy zone group enjoyed their training a whole lot more.
So take a cue from Lynne and Sally and relax and smile more on your summer runs. Enjoy the journey towards fitness...and speed!

Schuyler's Shoe Review - Brooks' Neutral Shoes |

Think of Brooks, and you will generally think of the brand that defined motion control. The Addiction, Beast and Ariel are many runners' and walkers' go-to shoes for flat, pronated feet. Similarly, the Adrenaline is now the most popular stability shoe in the country, selling more pair in wide and narrow widths alone than many shoes do in medium.
What many runners and walkers do not know is that Brooks makes an array of shoes for neutral feet as well. These shoes represent a range from light and fast to protective and plush.
The Summon is one of the few shoes that still uses Brooks HydroFlow cushioning technology. This old-school shoe still boasts new-school performance. Full midfoot ground contact makes it the best choice for flat-footed neutral feet or substantial orthotics. A slightly upturned toe promotes efficient and quick toe-off.
For runners who want some speed in their ride, the Ghost is for you. New to Fleet Feet Sports, this shoe has a wider forefoot fit than any other Brooks neutral model. Toe-spring is increased over the Summon, giving the shoe a very quick feel. Brooks DNA ensures that this is a high-mileage trainer that can also hold up to any speed you want to throw at it.
The Energizer Bunny of the Brooks neutral line, the Defyance keeps going consistently year after year. Built as a neutral version of the Adrenaline, this shoe has a firmer midsole than many other neutral offerings. This firmness gives it a more responsive feel while holding up to heavier runners and walkers. A snugger fit means it is a great option for narrow and low-volume feet.
Finally, the Glycerin 9 is a minor update to a major success. The Glycerin 8 was the first shoe to introduce DNA, a cushioning compound that firms and softens based on impact levels. In just over a year, this material has revolutionized the Brooks line-up. While the previous version had heel and forefoot DNA, the new update boasts a full-length DNA piece to provide unmatched cushion from heel-strike to toe-off.
Brooks "Run Happy" Weekend is Aug 12-14. Purchase any $150+ in Brooks gear (shoes, apparel and accessories) and get Brook's ultra-comfy, EZ Tech Tee for FREE. A $30 value! |

S! Caps: The secret to staying cramp-free in this heat and humidity! S! Caps by Succeed, are a salt/electrolyte tablet that alleviates muscle cramping, buffers the stomach and protects against hyponatremia. It is a very popular product among endurance athletes. The easy-to-carry capsules provide just the right amount of sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, phosphate and citrate to keep you going. It contains no fillers like sugar or maltodextrin. Just swallow with some water and keep on going!
Gatorade Endurance Formula: This is not your ordinary Gatorade! Gatorade Endurance contains 1.5 times the amount of sodium and 3 times the potassium of regular Gatorade, plus more chloride, magnesium and calcium. The "saltiness" encourages you to drink more and helps speed those valuable electrolytes back to your muscles so they can continue powering you through your workout or race. Many marathons, including Boston, Chicago, New York and Philly, serve GEF on course so if you don't plan on carrying your own hydration on course, be sure to pick-up a canister so you can start training with it. And good news (especially for you, Ken S), we now have all three flavors of GEF: lemon-lime, orange and fruit punch!
FitBooks: Sometimes the best way to make a healthy habit stick is to track your progress and hold yourself accountable. Research found that people who write down their goals are 75% more likely to achieve them. The threat of a blank page in my book is usually enough motivation to get me moving!
This neat fitness logbook is perfect for those just getting into shape and for those training for a specific event. Every day has its own page to record your workouts and food intake. I like "nutrient tracker" checklist that reminds me to eat my RDA of fruits & vegetables and drink more water. The books are sturdy and small enough to fit you're your purse, gym bag or briefcase, features a pocket in the back to stash some cash and includes a pen so you can fill it in wherever you are.

Knee, Ankle & Achilles Braces: CEP's parent company, Medi, is a leading provider of compression and braces in the medical industry. Several years ago they began offering their line of medical-grade compression socks and sleeves to athletes and weekend warriors to great success (it's our top-selling compression sock and short). Now, they are pleased to launch their line of braces and sleeves direct to the consumer without a doctor's prescription to provide advanced support both during and after exercise.
The braces and sleeves are made with a highly elastic, breathable and moisture permeable knit fabric that stabilizes your knee/ankle/Achilles and surrounding muscles, while also improving coordination and blood circulation. Additionally, the braces feature customizable silicone gel inlays for targeted support and improved alignment, and Medi's Additus+ System which combines compression with functionality so you can run, bike, walk, zumba, etc without restriction.
Currently in stock is the RxOrtho Knee Brace, Achilles Brace, Ankle Brace, and their knee and Achilles support sleeves |

Run Las Vegas with Team Challenge |
Team Challenge is an endurance sports training program that raises funds for Crohn's and colitis research and patient services in exchange for training, support, and lodging and airfare to the Las Vegas Marathon on Dec 4.
Participants range from seasoned athletes to novices who want to get in shape, triumph over a challenge, and/or meet other motivated people. Teams train in honor of local patients who are battling Crohn's and colitis, known as honored teammates. Their stories provide inspiration and motivation to train in their honor and fundraise for a cure.
For over 40 years, the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) has paved the way to a cure by creating the first research programs dedicated to Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. With escalating numbers of new cases, the need for research and patient support funding is greater than it has ever been which is why Team Challenge was created.
As a Team Challenge participant, you will receive:
- Personalized fitness training by an experienced coach for 4 months
- A supportive team to train with each week
- Training clinics and helpful tips on topics like nutrition, hydration, injury prevention and shoe fit
- Expenses-paid weekend to the Las Vegas Marathon (airfare, hotel and race entry)
- A dedicated Team Manager and Mentor
- Team uniform including a training shirt and race day singlet

"I wish I just had a few hours to myself..." | Have you uttered or thought these words? It is a challenge to find the pause button in our lives, much less find the time to use it! Our days are filled to the brim with work, children and the responsibilities that come along with being an adult. This time deficit is the driving reason behind the breathe women's health retreat.
Join Lynne Tapper of Team Training New England in the magical setting of Camp Robin Hood in Freedom, NH on September 15-18 for breath - a women-only health retreat. By consciously carving out these few days, you'll be giving yourself the breathing space you desire. Putting your daily routine on hold can provide some much needed perspective and the opportunity to recharge your batteries.
Activities for the weekend include yoga workshops, book discussions, cooking classes, kayaking, sailing, water skiing, running, biking, tennis, wine tasting, massages, reading and writing under shady trees...and breathing! There is no set schedule and every activity is optional.
Registration is $500 and includes rustic lodging at the camp, food and most activities. Click here to learn more or register for breath today - you will thank yourself tomorrow! |
Coconut Water- All Hype and no Help?
By Aubrey Schulz |
What was once a little known treat is now turning up more frequently. Coconut water is being touted as the new, natural energy drink. Promotional images on company websites display runners, mountain bikers and other active individuals happily playing outdoors. But is coconut water a good substitute to sports drinks?
Coconut water is the clear liquid taken from the center of the coconut. It differs from the white coconut milk that is high in calories and fat and most often used in soups and curries. Instead, coconut water is low in calories (50-60 calories per serving) and fat free with electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphate) and small amounts of many amino acids. It has a high amount of the electrolyte potassium, 15 times as much as the average sports drink. Sports drinks have been engineered to provide the body what it needs the most, sodium since our sodium levels are most depleted after an intense workout.
Post workout is a key time to rehydrate and rebuild fatigued muscles. Containing 95% water, coconut water will boost hydration levels. However it lacks protein, a key component of recovery. Coconut water fails to provide the recommended 15-17 grams of protein.
It is important to be vigilant about reading food labels. It is promoted that sugar has not been added. However the drink is not without sugar. The water naturally contains about 11-12 grams of sugar. Flavored varieties have additional quantities of sugar and more calories. Additionally, the price can also put a dent in your weekly budget. At $2 a bottle, the price of your weekly coconut water fix can get pricey very quickly. A glass of water and a banana will accomplish the same replenishing goals.
If coconut water is a treat that you like as a post run reward, then keep it in the mix. However if you are using it as the latest-and-greatest, get faster advantage, you are probably mislead. True, it is a more natural replacement to the brightly hued sports drinks. The lone ingredient is coconuts and that is refreshing in time where the ingredients list commonly extends beyond five ingredients.

Urban Challenge
Fri, Aug 12 @ 6:00pm | |
This fun event sponsored by New Balance is a combination running and trivia scavenger hunt similar to the television show Amazing Race. Teams of two will receive clues leading them to different locations throughout the Center & Blue Back Square where they will complete a challenge, then race (run or walk - no wheels!) to the next challenge location.
Knowledge of the area will give you an advantage, but teams can use their phones, Internet and people on the street to help them solve the clues.
Fleet Feet has teamed up with various businesses in the area, whose identities are secret until you figure them out from the clues. While we can't reveal who they are, we can tell you that there are some fun (and tough!) challenges in store for you.
The event fee is $25 per person ($50 per two-person team) and includes a high-quality tech tee and post-event all-you-can-eat BBQ. There will be prizes for the Top 3 teams, as well other fun categories such as team name, costume and most-spirited.
To register, complete this registration form and send it to the store with payment or register online. If you don't have a partner, we will match you with another solo participant. This event is family friendly and family members may compete together as one team (just register the two oldest members of the team).
The event is limited to 100 two-person teams - and everyone who registers before August 5 is guaranteed to get the shirt size they requested (late registrants will get a shirt, but sizes will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis).

Informal/FREE Marathon Training Support Group
Sat or Sun @ 7am | |
Are you training for a fall marathon like Hartford, Chicago or Niagara Falls and looking for training partners? Join this FREE group led by the Sole Sisters - a group of amazing women who met while training for their first 5k in Fleet Feet's No Boundaries Program in January of 2009. Since then, they have gone the distance at the VT City Marathon, completed a triathlon and the Bermuda Challenge (where, on the flight home, the Race Director for the Niagara Falls Marathon invited them to run). They believe in having fun on the run...and off the run too! This weekend the training plan calls for 9 miles (next weekend, they'll do 12 miles). Paces range from 8-12 min/mile with some runners utilizing run/walk intervals. Women AND Men are welcome to join in the fun! There will be a group leader with copies of the routes on both Saturday and Sunday at 7am so choose the morning that works best for you. Meet in front of the store and make sure to bring your hydration belt or bottle! |
Run/Walk Meet-Up Group: Every Saturday at 8am | |

We will have a place to hold your keys and change of clothes, as well as provide a bathroom, water and a book of routes ranging from 1-18 miles for you to select from. Our goal is to help match people of similar paces and training distances so no one has to run alone.
There is no charge to participate in the Meet-Up. If you already have a group of friends you run with, you can still take advantage of using Fleet Feet Sports as your meeting location from anytime between 8-10am.
