If you are like me, you probably celebrated Independence Day yesterday by sleeping in a bit and barbequing with friends and family - maybe even doing a little shopping at Fleet Feet Sports. As I was headed home last night, it struck me that I didn't do anything to honor the true spirit of the holiday by remembering those who fought - and still fight - for our freedom and the freedom of others around the world.
I thought of my grandfathers who fought in WWII and lost so many of their friends. I thought of all those who went to Vietnam and never returned - and of those who did return, but got the cold shoulder. I thought of my childhood friend Tyler, who was killed in Afghanistan a few years ago, and how his kids will grow-up not knowing their dad. Then I remembered Cliff.
Back in January, CT Native and FF Peep, Cliff Paquette, decided that he wanted to celebrate the gift of life and freedom on his 30th birthday by thanking those who gave their lives to defend it. Specifically, he wanted to run one mile for each of the service members from Connecticut who have fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the time, the number was 52, but the ugliness of war raised that number to 58 in the following months.
The Run for Connecticut's Fallen is this Saturday (July 9). Cliff has partnered with Team MAD and the national Run for the Fallen organization to make this an event for every age and ability. Cliff will begin his honor run in Sterling, CT. Fifty-eight miles later, he will finish with a lap around the Glastonbury High School track (sometime between 1:45-2:15pm).
Team MAD is putting together teams of runners to join Cliff for 10 mile segments (the last segment will be 8 miles). The goal is to have at least two people running with Cliff, one of whom will be carrying an American Flag. Cliff's pace will be around 10 min per mile. Teams can have up to 10 runners who can switch out as many times as needed during the 10 mile segment (support vehicles will be there to pick-up runners).
Additionally, from 11am0in on Saturday, participants are invited to run or walk as many miles as they want around the Glastonbury High School track to honor the memory of a serviceman or woman. Miles will be recorded by volunteers and be reported to the national Run for the Fallen organization. Food and drinks will be available to participants thanks to a few generous sponsors.
If you are interested in participating in this wonderful, non-partisan event honoring our country's fallen heros, please email Volunteer Run Coordinator, Jody Barr. Click here to learn more about the event.

Schuyler's Shoe Review - Adidas Sequence 4 |

When Adidas renamed the Supernova Control line the Supernova Sequence, they were trying to prove that the shoe offered balanced cushion in addition to stability. Over the course of three versions, they made many improvements. Upper fit was dialed in to be sleek without feeling restrictive. The heel ForMotion units were made increasingly gender-specific to account for the differences in mens' and womens' strike patterns.
With the Sequence 4, Adidas created a shoe that is a major re-vamp of the model without alienating runners and walkers who love the Supernova Sequnce fit and feel. Try on the Sequence 4 and the first thing you will feel is the plush cushion. No longer an avgerage moderate stability shoe, this update offers cushion and stability to match high-end offerings like the Asics Kayano, Saucony Hurricane or Nike LunarEclipse.
The new stability system takes a cue from gradual stability systems being introduced throughout the running shoe industry. Previous versions controntrolled pronation with a denser foam medial post. The update uses a gentler midfoot bridge. This piece provides a less blunt transition and softer feel under foot. At the same time, it increases stability over older versions.
Those who worry about their favorite shoe changing have no need to fear. The Supernova Sequence upper fit, snug heel and bunion windows remain the same as ever. |

Amy's Gear Corner - NIKE!! |
A huge shipment of Nike clothes for men and women has just arrived. Here are just a few of my favorite pieces:
Printed 2-in-1 Shorts (Men): These might be the coolest men's shorts we have ever brought in - the plaid print is wicked cool. Nike's Tempo short for men features a 7 inch inseam and an inner compression short (not a skimpy brief) so you get the 3 "C's": compression, comfort and coverage. Plus, the fabric is high-tech Dri-Fit to keep you comfortable and dry. There is even a zip pocket for your keys, cash or fuel.
Racing Shorts (Men): It's a real scorcher out there and we're not just talking about the temperature. Racing season is in full force and these are the shorts that the fast guys are wearing. Whether you like the traditional 2 inch split short or the slightly longer 4 inch racing short, you will love the full-range of leg motion they allow along with light, quick-drying fabric, vented hem and a fitted media-player pocket. This short smokes!
Running Skirt (Women): Ladies, the wait is over - the super-popular Nike running skirt is back in stock! No need to sacrifice style for function when wearing this skirt because besides being ultra-cute and flattering, it has Nike's famous Dri-FIT moisture-wicking performance fabric that pulls sweat off your skin and provides supreme ventilation. The flat-seams reduce troublesome chafing and the reflective elements make you more visible in low-light conditions.
Long Sport Top (Women): Hot summer weather calls for cool clothes like this tank top with a built-in bra from Nike. Why layer when it is so warm outside?! The lightly padded bra in this top provides shape, modesty and support for up to a c-cup while the tank features mesh panels and DRI-FIT fabric to wick sweat and moisture away from your skin. These colorful tops coordinate well with the Nike skirt and shorts in stock.

Featured Race: Summer XC Fun Runs |
Cross country courses aren't just for high schoolers, they are perfect for adults and kids of all ages. Think nice packed dirt and grass trails with a few "rolling hills" to get your heart rate up. Think no cars to have to be on the lookout for. Think SHADE!
The towns of Newington and Bolton both host a summer fun cross country series open to runners of all ages.
The Bolton XC Series began last week and will continue for the next six Wednesday's. Races are held on Wednesday evenings at the Bolton Heritage Farm (aka Rose Farm). There is a toddler 100 meter race at 6pm (free), a kids' mile at 6:10pm ($2) and a 2.3 mile race at 6:30pm ($3). All races are off-road and prizes will be awarded at the end of the series. For more info, click here.
Beginning next week (July 13), the Newington Park & Recreation Department will host their FREE fun runs on the cross country trails at John Wallace Middle School in Newington every Wednesday for the next 6 weeks at 6:30pm. There will be both a 5k (3.1 miles) and 3k (about 2 miles) course. Ribbons are awarded to all finishers. For more info, call the race coordinator, Jay Krusell.
These runs are hosted in honor of Mr. Frank O'Rourke who was a longtime Newington High School XC Coach. Participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who needs to sign the program waiver.
Both the Bolton and Newington runs are a great way for the whole family to stay in shape this summer, as well as high school runners logging their summer miles in preparation for the XC season this fall and for adults like me who want to pretend like they are in high school training for XC again. |

Informal/FREE Marathon Training Support Group
Sat or Sun @ 7am | |
Are you training for a fall marathon like Hartford, Chicago or Niagara Falls and looking for training partners? Join this FREE group led by the Sole Sisters - a group of amazing women who met while training for their first 5k in Fleet Feet's No Boundaries Program in January of 2009. Since then, they have gone the distance at the VT City Marathon, completed a triathlon and the Bermuda Challenge (where, on the flight home, the Race Director for the Niagara Falls Marathon invited them to run). They believe in having fun on the run...and off the run too! This weekend the training plan calls for 10 miles (next weekend, they'll do 11 miles). Paces range from 8-12 min/mile with some runners utilizing run/walk intervals. Women AND Men are welcome to join in the fun! There will be a group leader with copies of the routes on both Saturday and Sunday at 7am so choose the morning that works best for you. Meet in front of the store and make sure to bring your hydration belt or bottle! |
Run/Walk Meet-Up Group: Every Saturday at 8am | |
Every Saturday we will open our doors at 8am to runners and walkers looking to meet-up with others. We will have a place to hold your keys and change of clothes, as well as provide a bathroom, water and a book of routes ranging from 1-18 miles for you to select from. Our goal is to help match people of similar paces and training distances so no one has to run alone.
There is no charge to participate in the Meet-Up. If you already have a group of friends you run with, you can still take advantage of using Fleet Feet Sports as your meeting location from anytime between 8-10am.
