Expansion!

Construction Ahead! This week I celebrate my third anniversary of owning Fleet Feet Sports.  So much has changed in the three years since Alice turned over her keys and entrusted me to the store she created.

For one, I know my way around town much better.  For the first year, I rarely ventured off Farmington Ave since doing so guaranteed that I'd get lost.  The staff used to take bets to see how long it would take before I called them, lost and in a panic.  Fortunately, Farmington Ave had most everything I needed - work, home, food, coffee and good running.  It was a momentous day almost a year later when a friend invited me to the Corner Pug for housemade kettle chips and a pint of beer.  I didn't even get lost on my way home!

Second, there are so many familiar faces that come into the store now.  When I first moved to CT, the only people I knew were my Mom & Dad.  But now, I feel like I have friends visit me at the store every day.  Customers like you that share your passion for running and living fit.

We've built quite a community - one that welcomes everyone regardless of age or ability.  Over 1,000 people have graduated from our training programs, and our track workouts and fun runs can top 50 people even in the heat or snow.  Many are like Schuyler's mom, Amy, who never thought she could be (or even want to be) a runner, but has since fallen in love with running.  After almost two years of running 5k's, Amy conquered her first 10k on Sunday - clocking an impressive time and proving that Schuyler gets his running skill from his mom!

I have enjoyed watching your kids grow-up and find their own joy in running.  I remember when Mary Painter first brought her toddler son into the store.  He would just sit in his stroller and stare at me quietly.  I couldn't get him to smile or laugh at me.  Fast-forward to this weekend when he bounded into the store telling me all about dragons and then later, running a whole mile at Zoomerang practice - grinning and giving me a high-five after every lap.

Just as your kids have been growing, so has my "baby".  We now have nearly 20 dedicated staffers who give one of the best customer experiences around.  Many have been with me since my first summer - with Schuyler celebrating his six year anniversary this July.  That's almost unheard of in retail, but then again, we don't think of ourselves as just another retail store.  We are self-help specialists and daymakers who are fortunate to love what we do - and do what we love.

It's the reason why our new store managers, Noelle and Sean Coughlan, uprooted their family to CT this March.  They were working at a small Fleet Feet store in Stuart, FL and loved it so much that they decided to pursue opening their own Fleet Feet.  They have come to CT to learn all there is to know about "running" a store.  I think we got the best end of this deal because the Coughlan's are wonderful - so enthusiastic and knowledgeable and will help us to build an even better community.  Starting with a much bigger store.

That's right, we are going to be expanding!  Later this summer, Harry's Pizza will be relocating to a new spot across from Town Hall, and we will be building out their space, along with updating our current space to create a new store over double our current size.  While I'm not looking forward to the impending construction, I am super excited about having more space to make shopping - and visiting - more comfortable.  If you have any neat ideas for our new space, let me know.  I want the store to be a reflection of our community - and a place that continues to empower and inspire!

Thanks for an amazing three years!

Be Fit,

Steph

Schuyler's Shoe Review - Nike Breathe

Schuyler in his Vibrams

It's now taken as a given that many popular shoes will also exist in a winterized version: rugged and grippy outsole, water-resistant or waterproof upper, and darker colors to hide mud and muck.  Only Nike, however, was innovative enough to come up with the opposite concept.  The Pegasus Breathe and Structure Triax Breathe are perfect shoes for the hot days of summer that are already upon us.

In terms of function, these shoes are identical to their year-round counterparts.  The Pegasus provides firm, responsive cushioning in a roomy package.  There's a reason this shoe has remained a favorite for twenty-eight years.  The Structure Triax, now in its fourteenth year, boasts great stability for overpronators.  Even with a snug arch wrap, the forefoot is wide open to accommodate bunions.  The men's and women's versions of this shoe are gender-engineered, with the women's featuring a more flexible forefoot and a more sculpted heel to better match the unique gait of a woman's foot.

What makes these new versions different is, as you would expect, the breathability.  The mesh around your foot is open and airy, allowing a nice breeze to blow right through and sweat to wick off even faster.  Pair these with a DryMax sock and you might think your feet never started to sweat at all.  The sock-liner of each shoe is perforated and topped with a moisture-wicking fabric to ensure that the bottoms of your feet stay dry as well.  Act quickly, because while the summer heat might seem never-ending, these shoes are only available for a limited time.

Garmin Forrunner 610Garmin 610 GPS Watch: Garmin leaps ahead with this new full touchscreen running and cycling watch.  This compact package delivers quick satellite acquisition, up to four display fields at once, and connectivity with heart rate and bike speed/cadence devices.  It is easy to input and save detailed custom interval workouts (either run, bike or combine both for a "brick") on the watch for easy access in the future.

Asics Sol Shade HatAsics Sol Shade 2-in-1 Hat:  Need a cap with maximum sun protection? This cap is the one for you! It has 50+UPF rating so you will be protected in the harshest of climates. It has a back cinch, 360 degree reflectivity and wind/water resistance. The sun skirt protects the ears and neck, but can be easily snapped off. The headband is ultra soft and dries very quickly.

HVAC Diva ShortHVAC Diva Short (Women):

These shorts are super light, but they do not skimp on technology. There are pockets to tote gels, while the inner lining, wicks moisture, regulates your temperature and combats odor. These cute and popular shorts have hints of the Diva print, meaning that you will be one stylish runner or walker!

Essential 5" Short for MenEssential 5" Short (Men):

The Essential 5" Short is lightweight and will definitely keep you cool this summer! The mesh insets, woven moisture-transfer polyester shell, and 100% moisture-transfer crepe liner will keep you dry and comfortable. Also, adding to the comfort factor is the drawstring, elastic waistband. The waistband has the popular internal key/I.D. pocket, while the back of the shorts have a secure zip pocket, large enough for a slim tri-fold wallet. Simple, yet intelligent design, make this short a staple in many runners' wardrobes.

Amphipod's RunLite AirStretch Hydration BeltRunLite Airstretch Belt: It's heating-up out there - time to make sure you stay hydrated on the run with this cool new water belt from Amphipod that stretches to fit perfectly on your hips (not your waist!). This hydration belt doesn't have many of the little glitches that some other belts have. It can be so annoying when your hydration belt keeps bouncing.  The Amphipod RunLite AirStretch Belt provides bounce-free comfort, so that you can concentrate and enjoy your workout. You can even fix the bottles anywhere on the belt for personalized access and comfort! Isn't it nice when you can get to your nutrition or other essentials quickly, rather than wrestle with a zipper or the belt? This belt also meets the demand for quick fueling demand for a quick-access stretch pocket. The SnapFlasks "click" in and out with one hand so you can be reassured they are in there. The 100% leak-free 10.5 oz. bottles with hi-flow spout also can give you confidence that all your fluids will be there mid-run.

Summer Training Programs - Start Soon
Fleet Feet Training ProgramsDon't take a vacation from fitness this summer - come train with us and get faster and go further than you ever have before.  You will get in great shape, meet new friends and experience that Runner's High (OK, so maybe that feeling of elation will come after the run when you have an ice cold beverage in your hand...but it'll come!).  All programs feature at least one coach for every 10 participants so you get the instruction and encouragement you need, a cool tech-tee, training plan, weekly motivating emails, seminars, samples, discounts and some sweet treats along the way!

No Boundaries Logo

First up is our No Boundaries "Couch to 5k" Training Program sponsored by New Balance.  Our first practice is on Saturday, June 25 at 9am.  This 10-week program is designed for those who have never run as well as those who have completed a 5k and want to improve.  Our top-rate coaching staff is led by the wonderful Coach Rich and features some past No Boundaries graduates who want to give back and make you as addicted to running as they now are!  Cost is $95 and includes everything but the entry fee to our goal race: the Old Wethersfield 5k on August 28.

Register in the store or online.

10k = 6.2 MilesAlso starting on Saturday, June 25 (at 8:30am) is our 10k Training Program.  If you have recently completed a 5k in less than 40 minutes, we invite you to build your endurance and double your race distance.  Lead by veteran coach, Amy Kubisek, you will learn how to bound effortlessly up hills and add a few bursts of speed into your runs (which is especially helpful when you see a bear like the spring group did).    Cost for the 10-week program is $100 and includes everything but your entry fee to our goal race: the Old Wethersfield 10k on August 28.

Register in the store or online.

Half Marathon = 13.1 MilesIs finishing a Half Marathon on your Bucket List?  We've got two options for you this summer!

The first is the inaugural Providence Rock & Roll Half Marathon in Rhode Island on August 7.  We will be offering a condensed 8-week training program for this race beginning on Saturday, June 18.  Due to the shortened training time, you must be able to run 7 miles at a 12:00 mile pace (or faster) before the first practice.  We will help coordinate transportation and lodging for the group.  Cost is $80 - with one lucky participant winning a FREE entry into the race!

We will also offer our standard 12-week training program for our hometown race: the ING Hartford Half Marathon on October 15 (though, you can use the training to run a different fall half marathon).  This program begins at 8am on Saturday, July 30 and includes two weekly group runs and a speed workout.  This training program is best for runners who can sustain a 12:00 mile for 6 miles (run/walk intervals are fine).  The program cost is $125 and does not include your race entry fee.

26.2 = Marathon!Maybe a Marathon is in your sights?  We've got a few options for you including an informal training program (support group!) for either the ING Hartford or the Niagara Falls Marathon in October - or the Disney Marathon in January.

The Marathon Support Group is a FREE program lead by the Sole Sisters - a group of amazing women who met while training for their first 5k in Fleet Feet's No Boundaries Program in January of 2009.  Since then, they have gone the distance at the VT City Marathon, completed a triathlon and the Bermuda Challenge (where, on the flight home, the Race Director for the Niagara Falls Marathon invited them to run).  They believe in having fun on the run (and fun off the run too!).

The group has over 25 women (and a few brave men!) of all ages and abilities.  Paces range from 8:00-12:00 min/mile.  Some run the entire way, while others include run/walk intervals on their longer runs.  Their focus is on fun and laughter on the run - not pain!

Their first group run - an 8 miler - will be on Saturday, June 18 at 8:00am (meet at Fleet Feet).  If you aren't ready to go 8 miles and need to go shorter - or want to go further - you are welcome to do that as well.  Weekend long runs will alternate Saturdays and Sunday's and will be hosted at various running hotspots in the Hartford area.

For more information, email Debbie or Lisa.

Disney Marathon Training Program (begins Oct)

Run DisneyEver thought of running through Disney World?  Read on because this might be the opportunity for you!   We are teaming with Run Disney to offer a marathon training program to help train you to complete the Disney Marathon on Sunday, January 8.  Disney also hosts a 5k on the Friday before and a Half Marathon on Saturday which makes this a perfect family event - or you can choose to do the Goofy Challenge and run both the half and full marathons back-to-back (yes that's 39.3 miles in one weekend)!

Coaches Dave & DebFleet Feet staffer Deb Stroiney and her husband Dave Cilley will be coaching this program.  Deb and Dave have run the Disney Marathon for the past 2 years - with Deb conquering the Goofy Challenge this past January!   Whether you are a first time marathoner or looking to PR, Dave and Deb can help you on your way.  Dave has run a 3-hour marathon and is currently training to go sub 3-hours while Deb knows how to get the most out of your Disney experience.  Click here to view her pictures of the Goofy Challenge 2011 (yes, she stopped at every mile marker to get her photo taken with the featured Disney character).

The training program will start in October.   Participants should be able to complete a long run of 11 miles before the first practice (Deb & Dave can create a training program to get you to 11 miles this summer).  Program cost is $100 and includes your training program, coached long runs, mid-week speed workout, a cool tech team shirt, product samples, as well as Run Disney perks (discounted race entry fee and park tickets).

If you are interested and would like to learn more, please email Deb.  She and Dave will also be offering an information session on June 22 at 7:00pm (at Fleet Feet).  Hope to see you there!

The Connecticut Forest & Park Association has been instrumental in securing and maintaining land for public recreation.  In addition to maintaining 825 miles of trail each year through volunteer efforts, they have been working hard for the cause of recreational liability legislation so that trails can remain open to the public.

Their two publications, the Connecticut Walk Book East & West, were awarded National Outdoor Book Awards and are widely regarded as some of the most comprehensive trail guidebooks in the country.

Join us on Tuesday, June 21 at 7pm to learn how to explore the trails of Connecticut and how to use the Walk Books to find your next hike or trail run.

Can't make it to the workout, email Schuyler to subscribe to his Weekly Workout email.

Do you feel the need for speed?  Or maybe your workout routine needs a little spice.  Join Coach Schuyler each Thursday for a fun track workout.

Run/Walk Meet-Up Group: Every Saturday at 8am

Meet-Up Group logo

Every Saturday we will open our doors at 8am to runners and walkers looking to meet-up with others.  We will have a place to hold your keys and change of clothes, as well as provide a bathroom, water and a book of routes ranging from 1-18 miles for you to select from.  Our goal is to help match people of similar paces and training distances so no one has to run alone.

There is no charge to participate in the Meet-Up.  If you already have a group of friends you run with, you can still take advantage of using Fleet Feet Sports as your meeting location from anytime between 8-10am.

For more information, check our official "Meet-Up" group web site.

The 8 Furlongs Classic

One Mile Race & Nike High School Elite Mile

8 Furlongs Classic

Join us from 8-11am on June 19 in West Hartford Center for a one mile road race with a party atmosphere!

Eight furlongs is the equivalent to one mile - or, back in medieval days, it equated to the distance that a team of oxen could plough without resting.  The mile is one of the most exciting distances to race - but when is the last time you raced it? Which is why we partnered with Nike to bring back this celebrated distance and make it a fun event for the whole family.

Our race will take place on Father's Day with the first of 9 waves kicking off at 8am.  In addition to a family wave, men/women's master waves, men/women's open waves, there will be a special high school team competition and the Nike High School Elite Mile featuring the fastest kids in New England.  The first 1,500 people to register get a sweet Nike Dri-Fit shirt - and the winners (overall and age group) will walk away with significant cash or Fleet Feet gift certificates.  So brush off your racing flats and start training.

Join us for what promises to be THE racing event of the summer.  Click here to register.

We'll see you at the Classic!
