We Need Your Support!

West Hartford Reservoir

Back in July, I posted information about a hearing in West Hartford to help keep the MDC properties (which include all of the Reservoirs) open to the public for recreational use.  The show of support from everyone was incredible.  We packed the house and had over 100 people standing outside.  Our voice was heard and the MDC decided to keep their properties open through the winter which provided us with a safe place to run and walk when the snow drifts and icy sidewalks made our normal routes too dangerous.

Unfortunately, that was just one in a series of skirmishes during the past eight months.  The battle culminates sometime within the next two weeks when the Judiciary Committee schedules their final public hearing on Restoring Recreational Liability Protection to Municipalities.  The exact date hasn't been scheduled yet - and we may only get a 4-5 day advance notice.  But as soon as we know the date/time, we will post the information on our Facebook page and web site.

Please help to spread the word and try to change your schedule so that you can be there to either testify or just show your support.  The Judiciary Committee is where past efforts to change this law have died so the need for a large turnout is critical to showing Legislators how much we care about this issue.

In the meantime, you can review the powerful testimony that has already been presented on the Recreational Liability bills during a public hearing before the Planning and Development Committee in mid-February.  And special thanks to Charlie Beristain, Eric Hammerling, Rep. Baram and their team of tireless supporters from organizations like the CT Forest & Park Association, Sierra Club, Rivers Alliance, RRCA and REI, who have volunteered countless hours of their time to ensure a strong case to fix the loopholes in the current immunity law.  From all of us who love to walk, run and ride in the reservoirs: THANK YOU!!

Be Fit,

Steph

P.S. if you have questions or would like to get more involved, go to the Save The MDC Trails web site or contact Eric Hammerling at 860-346-2372 or email him here

P.P.S. Save the MDC Trails t-shirts are still available.  Get yours for $10 and show your support for this important cause.

Schuyler's Shoe Review

Schuyler in his Vibrams

When you pick up the New Balance RevLite 890, you'll immediately notice its sharp colors, sleek seam-free upper, and surprisingly light weight.  What you won't discover until you put it on your feet is that this weight comes without sacrificing comfort, cushion or durability.  While most lightweight trainers make sacrifices for weight, New Balance is able to strike a balance by incorporating new materials and careful attention to design.

New Balance 890/RevLiteThe new RevLite midsole foam replaces traditional EVA, providing cushion and durability at 30% lighter weight.  In order to reinforce the shoe against wear, additional steps were taken in shaping the midsole.  Shallow triangular protrusions on the midsole provide inherent stability and durability, while full midsole contact ensures that midfoot and forefoot strikers will get the same cushion out of the shoe as heel-strikers.  The heel-to-toe drop is a traditional 12mm, so this is not a minimal shoe.  Runners used to the cushion and under-foot feel of a traditional neutral trainer can enjoy the 890 without worrying about going too "minimal."

Topping off the package is a welded upper, eliminating seams that can add bulk and cause irritation, friction and blisters.  For lovers of shoes like the Mizuno Wave Rider, Brooks Ghost or Saucony Ride, the 890 just might rise above the rest.  But that's because it has less to weigh it down.

Minimus Road ShoeAs far as minimal runners are concerned, New Balance offers new and highly anticipated options in this category as well.  The new Minimus Road and Minimus Trail are probably the most-discussed new shoes of the season on Internet message boards.

Minimus TrailFor runners sticking to the roads and desiring a little more cushion in their minimal shoe, the Minimus Road is a similar shoe to the Saucony Kinvara and Nike Free.  The Minimus Trail - which can really be used on all surfaces - is the most minimal of the bunch.  While both shoes sport a low 4mm heel-to-toe drop, the Minimus Trail boasts an overall lower midsole height.  New Balance consulted with Vibram to construct the outsole of the shoe, which features a pod design for incredible flexibility and grip across a variety of terrain.  Wider forefoot shape allows the toes to splay out naturally.  Either model provides an excellent choice for minimalist running, walking or cross-training, especially those who are not yet ready for or unable to fit into a Vibram FiveFingers.

Purchase either the New Balance RevLite or the Minimus during the month of March and you'll be automatically entered to win a sweet prize pack courtesy of New Balance.

Amy Gear Corner

We have shipments of fresh, new spring apparel arriving almost daily.  Within the last two weeks, we've received great gear from Nike, Saucony, Adidas, Moving Comfort and Brooks (including apparel for men!).  Sometimes a new piece of running gear is all you need to motivate yourself to get moving!

Irish SocksSt. Patrick's Day Socks:  Get a little Irish on with these limited edition technical socks from Sock Guy (expected to arrive on Friday).  On the bottom of the Claddagh Ring Sock, it says "Love, Friendship & Loyalty" - whereas the clover sock is just plain lucky.  The perfect finishing touch to your "outfit" (both work and play) on St. Patrick's Day.

Brooks Diva CollectionBrooks Diva Print Apparel: If you are looking to add a little spice to your wardrobe, Brooks has designed the pieces for you!  Their new Diva print is bold and fun - sure to drive the winter blah's away.  The print comes in two colors black/white and pink/white and is available in a jacket, short-sleeve tee, capris and an adorable sports bra with molded cups that fits A-C cups.  Purchase any Diva print piece and get a free Brooks Diva print tech running hat - a $20 value!

Brooks EZ Tee for MenEZ-Tee:Our favorite staff shirt is a Brook's EZ tee - looks and feels like cotton (so soft!), but it is made from a moisture-wicking fabric that features anti-microbial fibers to reduce odors (it can be tough finding the perfect shoe), flatlock seams to prevent chafing and some 3M Scotchlite retroreflectivity to light you up when an automobile passes you by.  Now, Brooks has taken this shirt and given it sleeves...long sleeves...and a great heathered print: gray and blue options for the men, gray and dusty violet for the women - the women's features a fun Diva print screened inside so that it shows up as a translucent print on the back.  Very cute!

Luna BraLuna Bra:Moving Comfort makes the best sports bras in the business - and now they've introduced a bra that's perfect for all-day wear.  Now you can "run" carpool, do yoga, garden or take the steps instead of the elevator at work and be confident that your girls are well-supported and surrounded with a moisture-wicking material that is super soft.  The Luna bra does Victoria Secret's molded non-underwire bra one better by using bonded seamless contours in the cups for a smooth, no-show look under any tee or blouse.  There are adjustable straps and back closure along with front mesh zones to keep you cool and dry.  This bra is available in 32B - 38DD sizes.

All proceeds from the race and pasta dinner are donated to the Saint Vincent DePaul Society which provides shelter, food, counseling and referral services for people in our community who are in need.  Last year, thanks to the over 1,800 runners and walkers who participated, a $12,000 check was presented to the Society!

At the event, there will also be a shoe drive for Soles4Souls so bring your gently worn running shoes to the race.  If you can't make the race, you may drop off your gently used shoes at the UPS Store on 123 Farmington Ave in Bristol from March 1 to March 18.

Fleet Feet Training ProgramsGood news, the groundhog says that winter is almost over!  That means it is time to leave the stuffy indoors and head outside where the air is fresh and the Vitamin D free.  We've got a full schedule of training programs starting in mid-March and early April.  Something for everyone - including those who are just looking for running or walking buddies and don't want to join a formal training program.  Let's get movin'!

HALF MARATHONG PROGRAM:

Ivan Running Iron Horse

Go the distance at the Iron Horse Half Marathon this spring!  Whether you want to run your first half marathon or you are going for your PR, this program will accommodate everyone and will be a great time!  Participants should be able to run/walk 4 miles at an 11:00 mile pace before the first practice.

Registration fee is $125 and includes the training, a Brooks tech-tee, discounts and little surprises along the way to keep you going. The program will be led by the amazing Coach Chris McKee and his trusty assistants Sarah Miner and Tara Dillon.  They have been working hard to put together an incredible program that will keep you motivated and laughing throughout the 12 weeks.

This is a great program to help you increase your speed and endurance AND prepare you to run a half marathon in the fall.

Coach Amy Kubisek will be returning as your trusty leader with the help of experienced coaches Shannon and Randy who know just when to push you - and when you just need a little TLC on the run.

Sessions Start Sat, April 2 (West Hartford)

and Mon, April 4 (Downtown)

Info Meeting - Thurs, March 31 at 7:00pm

Have you always wanted to run or walk a 5k but didn't know how to begin training?  Maybe you are nervous or don't want to do it alone?  Maybe you have had a hard time sticking to a training program in the past.  If you answered "Yes" to any (or all!) of the above, this is the program for you!

No Boundaries Team - Mitten Run 2010

In just 10 weeks, you'll go from the couch to crossing the finish line of a local 5k (choices include the Koman Race for the Cure, Iron Horse 5k, BlumShaprio 5k at the Travelers Championship and the Celebrate! West Hartford 5k).  Our goal is to introduce you to the lifetime fitness activities of running/walking and encourage you to live a healthier lifestyle in a fun and supportive environment.  We use the "Galloway Method" which includes run/walk intervals and slowly ramps-up the time spent running and distance covered.

Our next No Boundaries programs begin the first week of April.  We will have two sessions including a Saturday morning session from the store (begins April 2 at 9am) and a Monday evening session under the Arch in Bushnell Park in downtown Hartford (begins Monday, April 4 at 5:30pm).  Both sessions will offer both beginner and advanced groups.

You can register online (Saturday mornings & Monday Evenings) or at the store.  Program fee is $95 and includes your training plan, coaching, a tech-tee, coupon booklet and lots of great tips and tricks to keep you going.

Not ready to run?  We invite walkers to join our free Saturday morning Meet-Up at the store at 8am for a 3 mile walk through the neighborhoods of West Hartford (begins March 26).  Make new friends and watch the beautiful gardens of West Hartford come alive!  Then join us for the Walk-!t 5k we are planning with the RRCA and Weight Watchers on May 22 at Riverfront Recapture.

"BARE IT ALL" Training:

Curious about the barefoot/minimalist running movement? Read Born to Run? Want to try barefoot running but don't know where to start? Our Run Bare training program is a 12-week coached group to get you ready to run the Celebrate! West Hartford 5k on Sunday, June 12 barefoot or in minimalist shoes like Vibram FiveFingers, Sacucony Kinvara, New Balance Minimus, Adidas Adios or Nike Free's.

The group will meet every Saturday at 9:00am, beginning on March 26.  Practices will last between 30-60min and will include barefoot running, drills, and education.  The program is open to anyone who has completed a 5k run, regardless of your speed.

Registration for the program is $50, which includes 12 weeks of coaching, a moisture-wicking t-shirt, weekly e-mails with your full training plan and a coupon book for great savings. It is recommended that you have three types of footwear to participate: a pair of properly fitted running shoes, a pair of minimalist trainers, and your bare feet!

Register online here or contact Schuyler for more information.

 Zoomerang Logo

Zoomerang Kids Running Programs:

Our popular Zoomerang Kids Program is back this spring, but this time we're expanding to offer a 10-week structured program to train kids to run a 5k.  We will also be offering our original non-competitive "Fun Run" program that gives kids the opportunity to experience running in a fun, friendly atmosphere where the motto is "will run for worms." Gummy worms that is!

Both programs will occur at the same time and place: Sunday afternoons from 4:30-5:30pm at the Saint Joseph College Track beginning on Sunday, April 3 and will culminate with a graduation run at either the BlumShapiro 5k at the Travelers Championship (June 11) or at Celebrate! West Hartford (June 12) - as well as be honored before the start of the Rock Cats game on June 11.  We will be partnering with the Travelers Championship to raise money for Hartford's Camp Courant and hope to have some of the disadvantaged youth who go to Camp Courant join us on the run.

The "ZoomK" 5k Training Program is designed for kids 7 years of age or older who love running and want to challenge themselves by completing the 5k distance (3.1 miles).  We will use a proven training plan and lots of wonderful coaches, to safely train your child over a 10 week period.  Just like our No Boundaries program for adults, we will use run/walk intervals and slowly increase the distance of our runs each week, as well as include running form drills, tips and games.  Kids in this program will need to run twice a week outside of practice (unless they play other sports) so parents plan on lacing up your running shoes as well!

The fee for the ZoomK Program is $75 and includes a technical t-shirt, coaching, training plan, race entry fee and $25 donation to Camp Courant (enough money to send a kid to camp for one day!).  To learn more or sign your child up, click here.

If your child is not old enough or doesn't have an interest in running that far, I encourage you to sign them up for our original Zoomerang Fun Run Program which focuses on having fun, making friends and building their strength and endurance.

The fee for this program is just $15 and includes a t-shirt and fun at the track (including a gummy worm post-run and "lap rewards").  Click here to learn more or sign-up.

(starts March 26)

Meet-Up Group logo

Beginning on Saturday, March 26, we will open our doors at 8am to runners and walkers looking to meet-up with others.  We will have a place to hold your keys and change of clothes, as well as provide a bathroom, water and a book of routes ranging from 1-18 miles for you to select from.  Our goal is to help match people of similar paces and training distances so no one has to run alone.

There is no charge to participate in the Meet-Up.  If you already have a group of friends you run with, you can still take advantage of using Fleet Feet Sports as your meeting location from anytime between 8-10am.

For more information, check our official "Meet-Up" group web site.

Time to Train

Expo & Social

Time to Train Expo & Social

Fleet Feet Sports is teaming-up with Select Physical Therapy to host an event you won't want to miss: the "Time to Train" Expo & Social on Wednesday, March 23 from 7-9pm.  The goal of this event is to help you start your spring training on the right foot - including providing tips from medical experts, information on the latest watches designed to take your training to the next level and a chance to meet and mingle with fellow runners and walkers who have like goals.

The event will take place at The Exchange (270 Farmington Ave - about 3 miles west of the store).  We will start in Select PT's clinic where we are fortunate to have three medical experts present and lead a panel discussion on "maximizing your training, while minimizing your risk of injury".

  • Dr. Karl Dauphinais (internal/sports medicine and Ironman):  recovery, nutrition and using physical cues to adjust training
  • Dr. Marc Lederman (podiatrist): foot issues (including plantar fasciitis)
  • Dr. Cliff Rios (orthopedic): knee and hip pain

Next, representatives from Garmin, Timex, Suunto and Adidas will highlight their latest watch technology before we head over to Murphy & Scarletti's (in the same building) for some of the best pizza in town (courtsey of Fleet Feet and Select PT) - and beverages.

During the social hour, we will have tables set-up for each of the watch companies so you can look at their product more closely.  Additionally, the doctors and representatives from HEAT, the Glastonbury River Runners, Team Training New England, Newington Bike and Anytime Fitness will be in attendance - and everyone will be encouraged to wear a nametag with your training pace and goal races to make it easier to find training partners and coordinate rides/hotels to out-of-town races (like the VT Marathon).  We will also use this event to kick-off our Saturday morning Meet-Up run/walk.

Plan to learn a little - and have A LOT of fun!  Isn't that what training is all about?

March is Tifosi

Sunglasses Month!

Tifosi Sunglasses

Tifosi makes great sunglasses for athletes of all types - including the ones who like to sit on the beach!  They are nearly indestructible (I've taken a hammer to my lens without scratching it and the frame is flexible so even twisting or sitting on it won't break it), look great, and at $39-89 are a bargain for the quality.

Most styles come with interchangeable lenses for different weather conditions or environment (trail, golf course, road) and some feature polarized and/or FototecTM technology that darken the lens when they are exposed to UV rays.  Many also feature slits that enhance air flow so they don't fog up when you are on the run.  Add to it an adjustable frame and nosepiece and the perfect fit is yours!  I've been wearing mine to shade my eyes from the sun's glare off the snow (plus, wearing them makes me feel like it's warmer outside)

March is Tofosi month at Fleet Feet Sports.  Everyone who buys a pair between now and March 31, 2011 is automatically entered to win a free second pair of your choice!  Of course, you can be nice and give the pair to your training partner, but we won't tell if you want to keep the spare for yourself.
