Running Junkie

Snowy Runs are Fun (and a workout!)I have never thought of myself as a running junkie.  I am not a "streaker" who needs to run every day - three to four days a week is plenty to satiate my endorphins.  I haven't done any crazy runs like the VT 100 or the 6-day endurance "race" across the Sahara Desert that FF Peep Spencer is currently training for - though, a run like that is intriguing.  But, like I admitted a few weeks ago, I am a sucker for running in extreme weather conditions because they make a routine run, fun and new.

Everything looks different.  It's like you are running in a strange place but without fear of getting lost.  Your attention shifts from your legs and lungs to the environment around you as you navigate drifts of snow, listen to the silence of a hibernating world and catch wafts of smoke from fireplaces that conjure up images of being warm and cozy (it's even better when the smoke smells of bacon - mmmm!).  You can't expect to PR or even go very fast so it's easy to forget about my time or distance and just enjoy the experience.

Which is why I was like a little kid last night, sleeping with my window blinds up so I could follow the progress of the storm from my cozy bed.  Yes, I know there is already a lot of snow on the ground, but there is nothing like running in FRESH snow.  I couldn't wait to gear up with my insulated tights, bright yellow jacket and Kahtoola spikes and get out there.  That is until my peaceful run was disrupted by a pick-up truck barreling up the road straight towards me.  Despite unplowed roads and a speed limit of 25mph, he was going at least 40mph.  I moved to the edge of the road and gave him the "runner's nod" as he passed.

Apparently, this did not please him because a minute later, I heard a loud, long horn and saw him speeding towards me again.  This time he stopped, rolled down his window and started cursing and yelling at me like I was some drug-addicted junkie asking, "Do you need your fix THAT badly?"  Without hesitation, I instinctively responded, "Yeah, I do" and continued running, ignoring his rant.

As I ran on, I tried to justify my being out on snow-covered roads.  I decided that I have every right to be out there, doing something that makes me healthier physically and emotionally - as long as I'm doing it safely and responsibly.  That means wearing bright clothes to make myself more visible, facing traffic and moving to the far side of the road when a car approaches.  It also reminded me that I need to make sure my sidewalk shoveled to make it easier for runners and walkers (and my mailman!) - and as a driver, to slow down in bad conditions.  You never know who you may be sharing the road with.

Don't let this snow keep you inside - but be careful out there!

Schuyler's Shoe Review - New Balance 860

Schuyler in his Vibrams

With the release of the neutral 759, New Balance redefined many runners' perception of their brand.  With a bulk-free midsole, streamlined upper, seam-free construction and fast looks, this shoe looked nothing like New Balance trainers of previous years.  Yet even with the new design the 759 was as highly-cushioned, if not more so, than many comparable shoes.

New Balance 860 - for menNow the New Balance designers have taken the 759 approach in a more stable direction.  The 860 is an update to the popular 760, but it looks more like the 760 went through a boot camp training program to emerge stronger, leaner and more fit.  For runners and walkers who love a stability shoe with a great fit, it's ready to handle the mileage you need to achieve the same goals.

New Balance 860 - for womenThe first thing you will notice about the 860 compared to its predecessor are the straight laces that replace the traditional New Balance "bubble" laces.  While the bubble laces provided a small increase in snugness, they also contributed to a bulky look.  Consider the new laces this shoe's equivalent to the snazzy new clothes it got to celebrate its new good looks.

Additionally, the shoe is almost an ounce lighter than its predecessor.  This reduction in weight comes from a thinner upper, foregoing lockdown devices and inner-sleeves for a simple, snug fit.  It also is the result of midsole foam that is 24% lighter than the standard.

With all that has changed in the move from the 760 to the 860, it is important to note what has stayed the same.  The cushion, stability, variety of widths, and excellent accommodation of orthotics have not gone anywhere.  They're just easier to find.

Moving Comfort's Juno BraJuno Sports Bra: Moving Comfort describes this powerhouse racer-back bra for larger breasted women (C-DD) as "gravity-defying and super-supportive".  It debuted last fall and quickly became one of their best sellers (selling out so quickly that we just now got our first shipment in).  The Juno features a seam-free interior with molded cups for great shape and no-show-thru.  The neckline, straps, armholes and back are all bonded (think bulk-free, chafe-free).  Both the straps and band are adjustable for a true customized fit and feature "bounce stops here" stabilizers.

Mizuno Breath Thermo GlovesMizuno Gloves:  When you run (or shovel snow) in the cold, your body moves blood away from our extremities to keep our core warm.  This can leave your hands and feet more susceptible to frostbite.  To protect your hands, treat them to an awesome pair of gloves featuring Mizuno's proprietary Breath Thermo fabric.  Breath draws moisture/sweat away from your skin onto the fabric where a harmless chemical reaction uses the moisture to generate heat.  It has been proven to raise surface body temperature by 3-4 degrees which can be the difference between running comfortably - or being miserable and clammy.   We currently have the fleece and the windshell versions in stock.

Sporti PopSporti Pops:  How many times have you gone somewhere for a run or workout and forgot to bring your sports drink?  John Davey, a local West Hartford resident, has developed the perfect solution: a lollypop comprised of minerals and electrolytes that tastes delicious - especially when you've been working out hard and need some salt to help quench your thirst.

Davey is no stranger to sport nutrition success - he was one of the researchers who discovered the powerful recovery properties of cherries for athletes and created "Cherry Pharm" juice.  He describes Sporti Pops as "functional nutrition" that is as good for the body (all natural sugars, only 48 calories) as it is for the environment (no bulky plastic bottles that release HFCS's).  They have gotten rave reviews from sports nutritionists and are currently being used by the athletes at University of Alabama and University of Tennessee.

Sporti Pops currently come in three flavors: raspberry, butterscotch and pina colada.  Best of all, they are currently FREE - just give us your feedback about them.
Featured Event:  Ride America 2011

Ride America 2011

This isn't a running event, but it's a great cross-training workout (and it is indoors!).  The Connecticut Sports Foundation is hosting its annual Ride America, an indoor cycling event to raise funds to assist local families struggling with cancer, on Saturday, February 26 beginning at 9am at Malibu Fitness in Farmington.  Working as a team, which is synonymous with the mission statement of the Foundation - "Families Helping Families", participants pedal the equivalent distance of riding across America and back in one day (6,000 miles)!

Presented by Farmington Bank, Ride America is open to solo riders and team riders who are challenged to raise $500 as individual riders or $250 as a team member. Bikes will be provided, but participants may bring their own bike or trainer if they like. Proceeds will go to support Connecticut cancer patients and their families.  This year's beneficiary is Abbie Brouker, a 4-year girl from Farmington who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at 16 months of age and continues treatment at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center.  Last year $84,000 was raised - this year the goal is $100,000.

Food and drink will be provided during the six hour event.  Plus there are great prizes being given away.  For more information or to register, please visit www.csfrideamerica.org.

"Learn to Run" - Beginner Program

Sponsored by New Balance

There was an amazing sight at our first No Boundaries practice of 2011 - over 70 hearty souls came to run despite 20 inches of snow on the ground and 0 degree temperatures.  If you google "Winter Warrior", here is the picture you'll see:

NoBoWinter2011FirstRun

It's not too late to join us and become a Winter Warrior.  Think of the stories you will be able to tell your family and co-workers after practice - they won't believe that you ran in this cold, snowy weather!

You don't need to be in good shape to do this program - but you will be in great shape once you complete the program.  We use the "Galloway Method" which includes run/walk intervals and slowly ramps-up the time spent running and distance covered.

Our next practice is this Saturday at 9:00am - we meet at the store.  If you haven't registered online, plan to arrive a the store about 15 min early so you can register.  Program fee is $95 and includes your training plan, coaching, a tech-tee, coupon booklet and lots of great tips and tricks to keep you going.

Not ready to run?  Join us for a 10-week walking program led by Charleen Meile and Barry Noonan.  Start 2011 out on the right foot and meet some fun new friends with like minded goals.  Group also meets on Saturday's at 9am.  Email Steph for more information.

The Run for Connecticut's Fallen

Run for CT's Fallen                52 Miles

                52 Lives

                52 Fallen

The Run for Connecticut's Fallen is a one-day moving tribute to the 52 service members from Connecticut who have fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is the idea of Clif Paquette who wanted to celebrate the gift of life and freedom on his 30th birthday by thanking those who gave their lives to defend it.

Clif plans to run 52 miles in one day - one mile for each fallen service member.  But he doesn't want to do it alone.  He wants to put together 52 teams - one to represent each fallen soldier.  Teams can be made of a single person or can be an entire group/club.  You do not need to be fast nor a runner.  You just need to be able to complete a mile.

In the weeks leading up to the event, they will be encouraged to raise money for the soldier's family.  On the day of the run, each team will then run their mile with Clif.  Each team will designate a flagman to carry an American flag for their mile.  At the end of the mile, Honor Guards will fold that flag and present it to the family.  The next team will then follow me for their mile.  Buglers will play Taps for each service member.

We are hoping to get as many groups and people involved.  In addition to leg-power, we need volunteers, spectators, police, EMT and donors (to help cover the expenses for this event like insurance, flags and shirts for partipants).  To volunteer, click here.

Snow Ice Cream!
Snow Ice Cream - YUM!!!Snow is a feast for the senses - sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.  By taste, I don't just mean snowflakes melting on your tongue.  No, I'm talking something better.  I'm talking Snow Ice Cream!  With all due respect, Ben & Jerry have nothing on my grandma's recipe for this tasty treat.  It's the perfect ending to a snowday (especially when topped with chocolate sauce).  You can't help but smile when you eat it!

Snow Ice Cream:
1 cup heavy cream
1-2 teaspoons vanilla (I like lots of vanilla)
1/3 cup sugar
6-7 cups fresh, clean snow

Whip the cream with a mixer until soft peaks form.  Fold in the vanilla, sugar and snow until blended.  Freeze until firm and enjoy.  Tastes best when eaten on the same day it is made.
