As I look back on 2010, I realize that for the first time in many years I didn't do any momentous races or even have a PR. I didn't do a marathon like I wanted to do, and I didn't accomplish my goal of 1,000 miles. In fact, I got so frustrated after not being able to run for several months that I stopped counting my weekly mileage. I didn't want a reminder that I was failing at my annual mileage goal even when my running was back on track.
My initial thought was that it was a pretty lackluster year, until I looked closer and realized that it was full of exciting little victories that kept me motivated and excited. I finally made it up Kilkenny Hill at the Reservoir without stopping (I even did a back-to-back ascent one day), bench pressed 90 pounds, did 40 "real" push-ups in a row and, just recently, figured out how to stand-up on a spin bike and be strong enough to make it through an entire 45 minute spin without cheating. I had fun diversifying my training. It not only kept me happy and sane, but made my comeback to running that much easier.
It was also a very fulfilling and wonderful year for our store community. Over 350 people from age 2 to 70 participated in our training programs - some completing their first race ever, others going further and faster than they ever imagined they could. Our Wednesday Fun Runs and Thursday Track Workouts grew in popularity with a peak of 77 people at the track one night. Our monthly McLadden's pub runs were a huge success, as was our Mizuno Mad Mini Marathon which featured 56 teams of two running all over West Hartford in search of clues and challenges.
Together, we collected nearly 20,000 pairs of shoes for Haiti - and, more importantly, managed to get them to Soles for Souls' headquarters thanks to the 100+ folks who volunteered in freezing temperatures to match the shoes and carry them from our basement to a rental truck donated by 96.5FM's Craig and Company Morning Show - and to Sean & Randy who drove the truck to Nashville during a snowstorm. We also raised over $7,000 for Jane Doe No More (a non-profit dedicated to helping victims of sexual assault) during an empowering self-defense workshop for women.
We have so many reasons to be proud of what we have done and the caring community we have created. Our common love of running may bring us together, but it is our different talents that allow us to have such a positive effect on our community. Runners do make the world a better place!

Schuyler's Shoe Review - Mizuno Inspire & Rider |

Mizuno has been on the rise for years. Each year, they finely tune their trainers to come in at the lowest weight on the market while providing great fit and comfort. After a refresh of their motion control shoe, the Alchemy, in 2010, they have moved their sights to the two flagship shoes of the line, the neutral Wave Rider and the stability Wave Inspire. These shoes last saw a full update two years ago, and the 2011 versions show just how far two years can take you.
Both shoes see similar updates, the main differences between the two remaining the stability level. The Mizuno WavePlate absorbs shock by deforming, similar to the human arch. By reinforcing the WavePlate on the medial arch of the foot, it can also account for increased pronation. The benefits of this system are decreased weight and a more gradual midfoot transition than in many similar shoes from other brands.
The first major change from the Wave Rider 13 and Wave Inspire 6 to the Wave Rider 14 and Wave Inspire 7 is a detached top eyelet for the laces. This eyelet is separated from the rest of the upper to allow a more natural flex with the foot's movement. A more subtle change is the Dynamotion Fit. This stretched upper material is used so that when the forefoot rolls into toe-off, the material above the forefoot will un-stretch rather than bunch up. Both of these features enhance comfort and reduce blisters and irritation.
Under the foot, these shoes are just as innovative. Both are gender engineered, providing unique midsole densities, heel strike angles and strike paths for men and women. For both, the new foam that makes up the midsole is now 30% more durable, similar to compounds employed in recent years by Asics and Brooks. And going into winter, looks count. For the first time, Mizuno has introduced a colored midsole. With a darker-colored upper, these unique colors mean that even if you've worn more Wave Riders or Wave Inspires than you can count, someone will ask you, "Hey, what's that cool new shoe you have on?"

CamelBak Pack's: Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean you don't have to hydrate on the run. In fact, you can get dehydrated faster in the cold, dry air of winter than on a warm, humid day. To keep your fluid levels topped-off, check out these cool new hydration packs:

DelaneyPlus Waist-Pack: This innovative waist-pack, named after a 23-time Boston Marathon finisher, is perfect for 1+ hour runs, walks or hikes. The reflective, highly-ventilated pack features a 24oz BPA-free water bottle, separate 5oz gel flask and a zippered pocket to hold your snacks, money and media devices.
Annadel: This classic CamelBak is designed just for women - lightweight, shaped to fit the unique contours of a women's body and has a curved suspension harness lined with soft velvetex so you can say goodbye to chafing. The reservoir holds 50oz of fluid and features an external zip pocket for keys and other essentials. It is fantastic for winter sports, hiking, biking or any other activity where you need a comfortable hydration system.
Octane 18x: This ultra-light hydration pack is ideal for 3+ hours of activity. It has a 21 liter capacity (including a 100oz reservoir) and only weighs 1lb! The low-profile shape provides stability and a "flat against your back" design, while the Quick Link™ system allows additional accessories. The pack's main compartment has a center zip expansion and the hipbelt has stash pockets for snacks and small essentials.
NEW Saucony Apparel for Women is here!

The Ethereal Jacket will help you stay motivated in this windy, cold, damp weather since its is as cute as it is functional. The jacket has a water-repellent finish, is wind resistant, features 360 degrees of reflectivity and has a USB-rechargable light on the sleeve. Best of all, it is a sweet pink color!
Artic LX SportTop & Tights: Artic means its toasty warm and built for the elements. LX is Saucony for "luxury" (think high-quality, soft fabric with lots of nice details). This matching top and tight ensemble will shield you from wind, wicks-moisture, insulates and ventilates. Despite being designed for high-performance, the top looks great casually too!
Primo WXT Long Sleeve: This top flew off the shelves when it first came in this Fall. This top is purely plush comfort and is oh so soft to touch and wear. I especially love the built-in mittens in the sleeve. So cozy!
Empress Long Sleeve: When this top arrived at the store, we couldn't stop oohing and ahhing. These wicking tops are fun with their floral and swirl designs - and the vibrant pink and green colors are fantastic! You can wear this top right now as a base-layer under your jacket or half-zip - and as a stand-along outer layer on warmer days (it has a 50 UPF rating).
Sport Wash: Did you know that traditional laundry detergents can damage your high-tech fabrics? They strip the breathability, insulation, water-repellency and moisture control by clogging the material's pores. Good running gear is expensive. Protect your investment with a special detergent like Sport Wash that can restore performance wear by washing away any residue - including the bacteria that causes odors. The $10 bottle will last for 20 wash loads and is safe for HE washers and the environment (no bleach, phosphate, fabric softener, brightener or scent). Want to try it before you buy a bottle? Ask us for a sample the next time you're in the store. |
Featured Race: Run for Refugees 5k |
Think Global & Run/Walk Local! Kick off your Super Bowl Sunday celebration by running or walking 3.1 miles to raise funds and awareness for the thousands of refugees that have settled in Connecticut. The fourth annual Run for Refugees takes place on Sunday, February 6 at 10am. You can chose to either run or walk the 5k distance. Participants are encouraged to dress in costume or wear their favorite team's jersey. The best costumed athlete will win a case of Honest Tea and a gift certificate to Archie Moore's restaurant. The race starts at New Haven's Wilbur Cross High School and goes through picturesque East Rock Park. The first half of the course is uphill; the second half is downhill. Splits will be provided at the 1 and 2 mile marks to keep you on pace. The finish line features a great INDOORS post-race party including live music and yummy food. Race proceeds go to the Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS) whose executive director, Chris George, is a Fleet Feet Peep. Over the past 25 years, IRIS has resettled over 100 refugees each year. Several of the refugees are runners who can't afford shoes, let alone a pair of running shoes. Fleet Feet Sports is proud to help these runners by providing them with gently-used running shoes donated by customers like you!
Race registration is $22 ($16 for students) if you register before February 4, otherwise it is $25. All registered runners get a t-shirt. Register online. |
Beginner 5k Program - Starts Saturday! |
"Learn to Run" - Beginner Program
Sponsored by New Balance
Sessions Start Sat, Jan 8 & Tues, Jan 12
Info Meeting - Thurs, Jan 6 at 7:00pm
Have you always wanted to run or walk a 5k but didn't know how to begin training? Maybe you are nervous or don't want to do it alone? Maybe you have had a hard time sticking to a training program in the past. If you answered "Yes" to any (or all!) of the above, this is the program for you!
In just 10 weeks, you'll go from the couch to crossing the finish line of the O'Hartford 5k. Our goal is to introduce you to the lifetime fitness activities of running/walking and encourage you to live a healthier lifestyle in a fun and supportive environment. We use the "Galloway Method" which includes run/walk intervals and slowly ramps-up the time spent running and distance covered.
Our next No Boundaries program begins this Saturday. Participants will have the option to practice on Tuesday mornings at 9:30am or Saturday mornings at 9:00am. We will offer beginner and advanced groups. Yes, it might be cold outside (and there may be some snow on the ground), but this program will give you super human strength to persevere and do what you didn't think you could do.
You can register online or at the store. Program fee is $95 and includes your training plan, coaching, a tech-tee, coupon booklet and lots of great tips and tricks to keep you going.
Not ready to run? Join us for a 10-week walking program. Start 2011 out on the right foot and meet some fun new friends with like minded goals. Group will meet on Saturday's at 9am. Email Steph for more information. |
Barefoot/Minimal Shoe 5k Training Program | Curious about the barefoot/minimalist running movement? Read Born to Run? Want to try barefoot running but don't know where to start? Our Run Bare training program is a 14-week coached group to get you ready to run the Glastonbury River Run/5k barefoot or in minimalist shoes like Vibram FiveFingers, Sacucony Kinvara, Adidas Adios or Nike Free's.
The group will meet every Saturday at 9:00am, beginning on January 15. Practices will last between 30-60min and will include barefoot running, drills, and education.
Registration for the program is $50, which includes 14 weeks of coaching, a moisture-wicking t-shirt, weekly e-mails with your full training plan and a coupon book for great savings. It is recommended that you have three types of footwear to participate: a pair of properly fitted running shoes, a pair of minimalist trainers, and your bare feet!

Good Luck Sole Sisters! |
In January of 2009, several women decided to get up off the couch and get fit. They scoffed at predictions for a cold winter and signed-up for our No Boundaries Beginning 5k training program. They didn't know each other on that first day, but by the end of the program, they were more than just friends. They were Sole Sisters.
After finishing their first 5k, they decided to up the ante and sign-up for our 10k Training Program where a few more ladies joined the sisterhood. Next, they completed our Half Marathon Training Program where even more women joined in the fun. The group surpassed 20 ladies as they created their own training group for the VT City Marathon and, later that summer, a triathlon (which was impressive because several of the women didn't even know how to swim) and mountain climbing. Through it all, they have cheered each other's victories and provided support and encouragement during the rough spots on the roads, in the water and in their personal lives.
Next weekend, they are celebrating their two year anniversary in Bermuda. Sounds warm and relaxing until you hear what they are planning to do when they get there: the Bermuda Triangle Challenge. The challenge consists of running a 1 Mile race on Friday, 10k on Saturday and then a Half Marathon on Sunday. Yeah, they are that crazy!
All of us at Fleet Feet Sports are SO proud of you and wish you safe travels, no blisters and many miles of smiles!
The Sole Sisters are always looking for new recruits. You don't have to be fast or be able to run far - just know how to laugh and want to have a good time. For more information, check out their Facebook page or email Debbie Dorman. Many of their runs start/end at the store (well, they actually end somewhere with hot coffee and mimosas...). |
Special Offer from Anytime Fitness |
As much as I love to run outside, there are times when it is necessary to head indoors - especially on my cross-training days. I love the facilities at Anytime Fitness: new, clean, safe, friendly, convenient and non-pretentious. They have everything you need to get in a solid workout including cardio-equipment with private TV's and mp3 jacks (I love the e-Spin bikes), circuit training, free weights and almost every fitness tool imaginable: kettle bells, TRX Suspension Trainer, battling ropes, foam rollers, plyo boxes, ladders, and more. I could play in there for hours...
They also have an accelerated group fitness class designed to help you lose weight, tone and increase endurance. Fit Club meets for an hour, three times a week for six weeks. It is led by Kristin, a CSCS-certified personal trainer and Fleet Feet Peep who owns more running shoes than I do! Kristen is tough and will challenge you to work harder and sweat more than you thought possible - but the results are worth it (or you get your money back). The last group lost an average of 4% body fat and saw their core strength improve by 189%. Wow!
Memberships at Anytime Fitness are very reasonable - but tell them you are a Fleet Feet Peep and they will give you your first 2 weeks free and waive the activation fee. To learn more call Andy or Jenn at 860-812-4311 or visit them online. |
