Fight Back - Learn Self-Defense |
A few weeks ago a female runner was sexually assaulted while out for her morning run. What makes the attack even scarier is that it didn't happen on an isolated trail or back road or even during the dark of night, but at 7am on a friendly residential street just a few blocks from the store - a street many of us run on because it feels safe.
Like many, my immediate reaction was to buy pepper spray to carry on my runs and when I head to my car after work. As I was holding a canister, Christine Lee from 96.5 TIC came into the store and told me that peppy spray can give women a false sense of security. She said that in a scary situation, chances are that I would panic and the peppy spray would be useless. It might even be used against me. The key to survival, she said, is proper training. I trust Christine since she was a victim of sexual assault herself.
The wheels started turning in our heads. We needed to put together a self-defense workshop like the one she hosted with her radio station last year, but gear it for runners and walkers. We sat down to work and thanks to a lot of help from our friends at Marketing on Demand, Elite Karate & Krav Maga and Hot Tomatoes, the Craig & Company Fights Back Self-Defense Workshop is on for Saturday, November 20 from 1-3pm at Hot Tomatoes in downtown Hartford!
The highly interactive class will be lead by Rich Kohler, an expert Krav Maga instructor. Krav Maga is a self defense/protection system created for Israeli Commandos and SWAT Teams. It is extremely effective and easy to learn. Rich will teach us how protect ourselves from a variety of attacks including sexual attacks and attacks with weapons and multiple attackers. We will learn how to use pepper spray and how our running/walking gear can help us escape. You do not need to be fit or athletic to participate.
If that's not reason enough to come, how about this: Donna from the Kakery is donating her delicious cupcakes, Thurston Foods is providing bottled water, Mark the Shark will be spinning tunes and the 96.5 TIC Street Team will be rockin' the room. Channel 3's Mark Dixon and FOX61's Allison Morris will be in attendance (along with Christine Lee!). And we have some incredible raffle prizes including a four-pack of tickets to the Travelers Championship, massages from Nurturing Hands, gift certificates from Hot Tomatoes and a Gibson guitar signed by the Jonas Brothers. It's going to be an amazing, empowering event!
Cost for the class is just $20 - all of which will be donated to Jane Doe No More, an organization that helps victims of sexual assault. Due to language and simulated violence, we ask that participants be 14 years or older (men are invited too). For more information or to pre-register, visit our web site. You can also register on the day of the event beginning at 12:30pm, but everyone who pre-registers will receive one free raffle ticket.
Be fit! Steph
P.S. We are hosting a new morning fun run lead by our friend Patrick "PJ" Ruddy. The 3-5 mile runs will begin/end at the store on Mon & Wed at 6am. The first run is this Wed (Nov 10). No one will be left behind or have to run alone. |
Schuyler's Shoe Review |
Winterized Shoes: Late fall brings not only cold weather and colorful leaves, but snow, ice, slush, mud, muck and other surfaces that make for less than pleasant running. Fortunately, a good pair of winterized shoes can make all the difference in turning the misery of your cold, wet run into something more like a happy childhood romp through the snow.
The Pearl Izumi isoSeek WRX is an update of last year's popular SyncroSeek WRX. Like last year's model, the shoe is built on a soft-shell upper rather than a waterproof membrane. This allows the foot to breathe and wick sweat while providing the same windproofing and water resistance of your favorite soft-shell jacket.
What has seen substantial change is the ride of the shoe. Gone is last year's plastic SyncroFrame for stability, replaced with a new 1:1 Guidance system that is made of EVA foam for a gentler ride under-foot and on hard roads. The outsole consists of a much deeper tread that can grip on icy sidewalks as easily as the rocks and roots of your favorite trail.
For runners who love the Brooks Adrenaline, the new Adrenaline ASR 7 provides the same fit and stability in a winterized, water-resistant shell. If you think of the car from James Bond that turns into a boat, you'll have a pretty good idea of how the Brooks designers transformed the shoe. Like the Pearl Izumi isoSeek WRX, the Adrenaline ASR features a water-resistant upper to allow the feet to breathe. The grippy outsole is not as textured as the Pearl Izumi model, making it a better winter road shoe than a winter trail shoe.
Whether you are tackling poorly-shoveled sidewalks or muddy, leaf-covered trails this fall and winter, the right shoe will keep you comfortable and, most importantly, vertical. If you need some extra warmth, a Darn Tough Merino wool sock (made in Vermont) can keep your feet toasty and happy when dry or, if you forget your water-resistant shoes, even when wet. |
Amy's Gear Corner |
Amy joined us late this summer after she and her husband relocated to CT from Maine. She is a high school English teacher turned triathlete (she rocked Ironman Lake Placid this summer in 11:36:41) which makes her a great wear-tester. Plus, she knows that looking good while working out and racing is part of the fun!
Asics' Cable Knit Beanie: You do not need to be a professional runner to wear this ultra cute hat, but one could not help but notice this fashionable hat on Deena Kastor, Olympic bronze medalist and American record holding marathon runner, while commentating for the NYC Marathon. It has a thick crochet cable knit, stretched fleece moisture wicking liner and is available in white or black. This beanie can be worn for many occasions, athletic and non-athletic: pre-run, during your run, post-run, during errands, around town or cheering from the sidelines.
Pearl Izumi Shine Wind Mitt: With the temperature getting colder, it is a necessity to own quality gloves. And, Pearl Izumi doesn't disappoint with their latest glove that doubles as a mitten. All you have to do is pull the wind-repelling "screaming yellow" mitt liner over your fingers and voila! You now have a high-viz mitten, allowing your fingers to stay warmer. Don't want mittens? Tuck the liner pack into its pocket and you've got a great pair of gloves. This multi-tasking mitt is definitely a fav among the staff.

Icebreaker Apparel: The staff is buzzing (baaa'ing?) about Icebreaker this year. Why is it so special? It is because Icebreaker is sophisticated, while functional. Their garments are made of merino fiber from New Zealand's durable merino sheep that can withstand extreme climates (you can trace your garment's merino back to the sheep where it originated by entering in the "Baaa Code" found on your garment). The high-quality, all-natural merino is also breathable, temperature regulating, odor resistant, soft and non-itchy.
Icebreaker comes in several weights and styles that make it perfect for layering. In addition to running in it, Icebreaker is perfect for backpacking, skiing, traveling (no wrinkles, no washing!), sleeping and looking sharp while out on the town. Staffer Mike fell in love with the product so much that he bought one of everything, earning him the nickname, Icebreaker King. As he likes to put it, "Dog may be man's best friend, Icebreaker is a runner's best friend."
Base Layer: Icebreaker's "BodyFit" line is quite possibly the perfect activewear (though, Steph says its great for sleeping too). It is stylish enough to wear solo on warmer days, but excels as a base layer because it fits close to the body (no bulk!). Designed with runners, mountain bikers, skiers and hikers, these tops and leggings for men and women provide warmth without weight and are highly breathable, not to mention odor-resistant in case you don't have time to change after a workout.
Mid-Layer: Looking for mid-weight insulation for colder conditions? Look no further than the Quantum Zip for men and women. This half-zip features a form-fitting, sharp fit combined with technical features that athletes require. Mike has worn it running and while working at the store (probably on the same day since it doesn't retain odor). It is made of Icebreaker's mid-weight merino - Icebreaker's warmest and most breathable performance base layer (though, it's great to wear on its own too). It has a zippered chest pocket, reflective trim, a drop tail for added coverage and deep venting.
Outer Layer: The picture doesn't do this hoodie justice. The Quantum Hood is probably the most beautiful piece we have ever had in the store - sophisticated, streamlined and chic. It has all the protection you need against the elements AND the technical features necessary during a workout. It is fully lined, has zippered pockets, a two-way reflective zipper, specialized ventilation, and other design details that allow for a full range of movement. It is available in black and a deep ink blue. |

The 4.74 mile race begins at 10am on Thursday, November 25. It begins and ends on Main Street in Manchester (in front of the St. James Church). The MRR has doubled the number of buses this year to help ensure that everyone gets to the Starting Line in time, but you are encouraged to arrive at the shuttle bus parking lot by 8:30am. For more information on parking and the shuttle bus system, click here.
The MRR Sports Expo will be held on Saturday, November 20 from 8:30-11:00am at Bennet Middle School in Manchester. If you have come to the Expo in past years, you know you can get some sweet pieces of apparel at amazing prices.

The inaugural Little Manchester Road Race will also be run on Saturday, November 20 at 10am. Kids 12 and under are invited to participate in this free fun run (kids can choose between ½ mile, 1 mile or 2 mile loops - parents are welcome to run with their kids) sponsored by Henkle and Fleet Feet Sports. All kids will receive a medal, sweatshirt and post-race treats.
The races will start and finish at the Bennet Academy soccer fields in Manchester - just 1/4 mile away from the Expo. Parking at and around Bennett Academy and their fields are plentiful.
Registration will be capped at 300 kids so parents are encouraged to pre-register their child to guarantee entry. Click here to download the registration form and mail it to Fleet Feet Sports (1003-B Farmington Ave, West Hartford, CT 06107). Mail-in registrations must be received by next Tuesday, Nov 16.
If spots are still available, registration will take place at the Expo beginning at 8:30am. Check the Fleet Feet Sports web site for details about open spots on Friday night.
If you have already registered your child(ren), look for a confirmation email early next week that will give you details about packet pick-up and where to meet on the 20th. |
