How Loud Can You Cheer?
"The Parrothead" Cheer Zone at the Flying Pig MarathonOne of the biggest motivators to doing anything is seeing someone similar to you successfully do it.

I used to think that I could never be a good enough runner to tackle the marathon.  But one year I went to cheer on my sister at the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon.  I was amazed to see so many runners who looked just like me - and even some who appeared to be bigger and slower. I was inspired and jealous.  I wanted to taste the thrill of accomplishing the feat of running 26.2 miles using only my foot power.  I wanted to be deserving of the crowds' cheers and encouragement (especially from the Parrothead Cheer Zone)!

All the way home to DC, I couldn't get the image out of my head.  I finally decided that if they could do it, so could I.  Five months of training fueled by those images later, it was me out there on the marathon course.  Crossing the finish line of the Marine Corps Marathon is one of my favorite memories.  I had done it!

Lucy Nolan (who you can read more about below) was the same way.  Last September she joined the Fleet Feet Volunteer Crew as we helped out at the Women's Triathlon in Farmington.  Watching all the women got her excited about trying a triathlon.  She said, "Next year, I'm going to do this!"  Lucy is well on her way to making that prediction reality.  I can't wait to give her a high-five and a cup of water when she passes my water stop this year!

With this in mind, I think the ING Hartford Half and Full Marathon could see huge growth next year because of an exciting change to this year's route.  This year, seven of the 13.1 miles of the Half Marathon will be run through the neighborhoods of West Hartford!  Runners will still start and finish in Bushnell Park (and run under the Arch), but the course will now take them through Elizabeth Park and along Boulevard, Trout Brook Drive and Steele Road.

Running through West Hartford is going to be an awesome experience for both the runners and the community.  To ensure that, we hope to set-up neighborhood Cheer Zones that rival the streets of Boston (maybe even challenge the famed women of Wellesley College once we get a few years of practice!).  We will celebrate the runners and walkers who are pursuing their goal, but also inspire our neighbors to dream about completing the course for themselves one day.

Of course I'm going to need your help to do this.  I am looking for volunteers to be Fleet Feet Cheer Captains and help recruit neighbors and organizations like the scouts, soccer teams, bands, etc, to set-up cheer stations.  I'm even thinking we make a contest out of it with the runners voting on the best group?  Email me if you're interested!

Be fit and cheer loudly!
Steph

P.S.  If you want to run the half marathon this year, but don't want to train by yourself, it's not too late to join our Half Marathon Training Program.  We meet on Saturday's at 7:00am.  Click here for more information or to register.
Schuyler's Shoe Review
Schuyler
Asics Landreth: The Asics Landreth has gone through many changes in its six versions. While the shoe started out as a replacement for a discontinued lightweight trainer, it became a firmer version of the popular Cumulus or a neutral version of the 2150 stability trainer. While all five previous Landreths have been great, high-quality shoes, they were always defined in relation to other models either currently or previously released by Asics.

Women's LandrethThe Landreth 6 introduces a revolutionary exoskeletal heel clutching system. While that might sound scary, it refers to a system by which the heel is completely separated from the rest of the shoe, attaching in to the midsole to allow for a snugger fit with minimized heel slippage. The other benefit is that when toeing off, the sides of the shoe's heel will not buckle, reducing rubbing, blisters and irritation on sensitive ankle bones.

Men's LandrethAsics had to delay the Landreth 6 by a few months to perfect its fit and feel. One thing that they ensured in this time was that despite its changes in fit, the responsive neutral ride would remain unchanged for fans of the previous versions. One new group of runners may be able to run in the Landreth for the first time ever: those with strong, wide feet since for the first time ever, the Landreth now comes in widths.
Sarah A's Picks of the Week
Summer is in full swing and this heat wave just won't give. Running in breathable singlets and always carrying water with you on the run are imperative to surviving the warm weather. Here are some great products that will get you through the miles.

Stretch Hydration Belt from AmphipodNEW Amphipod Hydration Belt: This new belt still has everything you love about the original, BPA-free bottles that you can add or remove, click-in access so hydrating is easy, and a pouch to store nutrition and keys. But now Amphipod has created a 10.5oz bottle (this belt comes with two) so you can carry more liquid without the clutter of several small bottles. They have also upgraded the belt to breathable stretch elastic that allows you to let it rest on your hips (no more annoying creapage!) Carrying liquid on the run just got a little more comfortable.

(Note: this hydration belt is so great that we've already sold out.  We expect more to come in next week.  Email Steph if you'd like us to reserve one for you.)

Nike Singlet for menMen's Nike Singlet: A clean and simple design, Dri-FIT material with mesh panels along the sides and longer back make this singlet a great option for the guy who wants to feel good and look good. Running with cut off sleeves will not only show of the work you've been doing at the gym but it will help regulate your body temperature and allow more air to reach your skin and help cool your body. I say it's a win-win.  We also have some matching split shorts so you look extra fast.

Brooks for Her TankBrooks for Her Pink Ribbon Tank: Flattering for all figures this semi-fitted tank by Brooks raises the standard for apparel. It has all the elements that make for a great tank top including a good cut, moisture wicking fabric, a zip pocket on the back hip and a great color.  What stands out the most, however, is the fact that a portion of the proceeds from your purchase will go towards breast cancer research and the subtle pink ribbon sitting on the bottom right of the tank will spread the word and raise awareness.
Featured Race: Winding Trails Tri Series
Winding Trails Tri SeriesWhether you are a seasoned triathlete or just dipping your toes into the sport, you need to check out the Winding Trails Summer Tri Series which features an off-road sprint triathlon every Tuesday at 6:15pm at Winding Trails in Farmington, CT.  Now in its 10th year, this wickedly fun triathlon directed by Fleet Feet Peep, Sharon McHale, averages almost 200 triathletes of all ages and abilities.

If you're not ready to go the distance yet, there is a "Tiny Trail Tri" every Tuesday at 6:00pm that consists of a 200 yd swim, 3-mile trail ride and 1-mile trail run.  Times for this event are not recorded so the focus is on building your confidence and having fun.  Cost is $5/members and $10/non-members.

A Triathlete's Triumph!

The following story was written by (and reprinted with permission from) Susan Campbell of the Hartford Courant.  It's about an amazing woman named Lucy Nolan.

Lucy and her sister Sally joined our No Boundaries beginning running program in 2009 and haven't stopped pushing their limits since.  Lucy's first words to me after her triathlon were "I'm hooked", followed by "now I need one of the Garmin GPS watches so I can work on my running."

We're so proud of you Lucy!

******************************************

Photo Courtesy of Susan Campblell & the Hartford CourantAt 53, Lucy Nolan missed the effects of the watershed Title IX by just moments. That landmark legislation - which opened the door to sports to so many girls and young women - came just a little too late.

Nolan always swam - she grew up spending summers on a lake - but she never considered herself an athlete.

And then she hit 50, and hired a personal trainer. As executive director of End Hunger CT!, Nolan knows the importance of a good diet and exercise. Then, too, her mother and other family members have struggled with Alzheimer's, and she and her sister and cousin vowed to one another they'd exercise as much as they could.

Nolan's goal was to ski on one waterski on her 50th birthday - and she did, right up until the ski broke, flew up, and ruptured her hamstring.

No goal is without challenges. On Sunday, she completed the Massachusetts State Triathlon in Winchendon, Mass. And on Monday, she was basking in her own marvelousness - a little tired, but not sore -- and happy to be the proud possessor of the race's Athena cup, given to women above a certain weight (in this case, 150 pounds) who finish strong. Nolan calls it her "Big Girl Award," which means, on one level, she is The Big Girl.

To prepare for competition, Nolan began training with Fleet Feet, and then Team Training New England. For that last group, she'd meet every Wednesday and Saturday to run with a pack. Running with others motivated her.

"I need somebody to be my coach," Nolan said. "I'm not one of those people who can go out and do it on my own. I spent years not doing anything. I need to know that if I don't exercise and then go out on Saturday, I'll be dying and everybody else will be running."

And the best part? Her children - including the 16-year-olds - are completely impressed. How often can a mother impress a 16-year-old? Her next triathlon is in September, in Farmington.
