28 bones + 33 Joints + 112 Ligaments |

The other night I saw a commercial for Dr. Scholls' new Footmapping scanner that instantly recommends one of their "custom fit" orthotics to cure your achy, tired feet. The computerized scanners, which are being installed in drug stores and superstores like Wal-Mart, show your foot's pressure points and arch type. It's a fancy way of doing the "Wet Test": wet your feet and stand on a surface, like a brown paper bag, that leaves a visible footprint. The wider the band that connects your heel and ball, the lower the arch you have. Your arch type effects your biomechanics and is an important component of choosing the right shoe for your foot, but it is only part of the FIT story since about 20% of people's arches act differently than they "should". Here at Fleet Feet Sports, our FIT Process has three main components that help us define your foot and make the best shoe recommendations for you: foot morphology, biomechanical assessment and "other". Foot morphology is a fancy way of saying that we analyze your foot size, shape and arch type. This is done by visually looking at the foot statically and dynamically (important since you are in motion when you run!) and taking multiple measurements with an old-fashioned Brannock device. This helps us to choose the right size shoe and shoe brand since each shoe company fits a certain shaped foot better. That is why your friend may swear by his Asics shoes, but they cause you pain. Next, we examine your biomechanics by determining your arch flexibility and doing a gait analysis (either watching you walk barefoot or with our video gait analysis software). This tells us if you overpronate, supinate or are naturally efficient which in turn, governs what type of shoe (neutral, stability or motion control) you need, as well as the curvature of your shoe's last. Key here is arch flexibility since a rigid arch needs extra cushioning to help attenuate the shock produced when the foot hits the ground at forces of 2-4 times body weight. Whereas, a flexible arch disperses shock better, but all that flexibility in the mid and fore foot can cause overpronation which stresses and torques your feet, shins, knees, hips and back causing its own host of problems. Finally, we take other special considerations into account like your gender, weight, training surface, weekly mileage, injury status, orthotics and structural deviations in the foot like bunions and extra bones. We put all this data together and bring out 2-3 pairs of shoes that we think will fit you best. Don't be surprised if one of those first shoes feels amazing - it means that we did our job right! When you think about it, the foot is a marvelous structure. It has 28 bones (including the sesmoids), 33 joints, 112 ligaments, plus tendons, nerves and blood vessels that work in unison to support, balance and propel your body. No two feet are exactly the same nor do they always fit into a specific category. Don't cheat your feet and let a computer scan recommend an orthotic or running shoe for you. An injury is going to cost you a lot more, monetarily and mentally, than a good pair of shoes. Invest in your feet. Let our Fit Professionals teach you about your feet and help you find the perfect fit. We guaranteed it!
Be Fit!

Schuyler's Shoe Review |
Asics Nimbus 12: Few shoes carry as apt a name as the Asics Gel-Nimbus. The shoe is legendary for its soft yet responsive cushioning in the forefoot and heel. With last year's version, the fit changed dramatically from a roomy toebox to a snugger one. While it used to be a great shoe for wider feet, the Nimbus 11 was still just as plush, but for feet on the narrower side of medium. The just-released Nimbus 12 widens out a little, so while it does not return to the wide roots of the 8th, 9th and 10th versions, it fits a greater variety of feet than last year's. In addition to a fit that should work for a vast majority of neutral runners, Asics has enhanced a number of features that can help with a smooth transition. The vertical guidance line in the midsole and outsole creates a decoupling, so that the foot can move more naturally with the shoe instead of being too rigid a platform. Like many shoes this year, eyelets are increasingly discrete so that the laces do not cause the upper to buckle inward or outward during toe-off. What has not been changed is the asymmetrical lacing, which is more anatomically correct such that it takes pressure off the top of the foot. This feature is great for runners with metatarsal pain or those with a high-volume instep. The main thing that remains unchanged, of course, is the Nimbus' great cushion underfoot. |
Now in the Store: |
Mizuno Cabrakan Jacket: I used to not like wearing jackets when I ran. They felt too bulky, heavy and loud, but this jacket changed all that. Now, whether it is 10 degrees or 50, windy or raining, this is my go-to outer layer. It is wind and water resistant, SUPER lightweight - weighing just 3 ounces - and packs in its own pocket. It has great reflectivity so you can wear it day or night, a vented underarm to prevent over-heating and specially designed arms and collar that allow mobility. It is the perfect jacket for "Marathon Morning", when you need a light layer early on, but don't want to be burdened down later in the race - or if you like to go hiking (I wore it nearly every day in Costa Rica).
Asics Reflective Shirts: What is better than wearing a cute top during your workout? Wearing a cute top that's also functional! I thought this top was so neat that I ordered one for myself. It feels as soft as cotton, but it's a high performance moisture-wicking material that dries quick, offers 50+ UPF and has anti-microbial properties to control odor. The best part is that the cute swirl design is printed in reflective ink, so you light-up when a car's headlights hit you. Smart!
S! Caps: We've had a lot of requests for this product so I'm excited to finally have it in store. S! Caps by Succeed, are a salt/electrolyte tablet that alleviates muscle cramping, buffers the stomach and protects against hyponatremia. It is a very popular product among endurance athletes. The easy-to-carry capsules provide just the right amount of sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, phosphate and citrate to keep you going. It contains no fillers like sugar or maltodextrin.
TP Massage Balls: This is a magic little ball. Its secret lies in the material it is made of which has a significant denseness that changes shape when pressure is applied to it for 5-7 seconds unlike a tennis ball that will collapse when pressure is applied to it. This allows the ball to penetrate the belly of the muscle safely and effectively, much like a traditional massage. The ball is great for the neck, shoulders, back, chest, piriformis, calves, psoas - anywhere you have minor aches, pains and muscles spasms. Interested in learning more about Trigger Point Performance Therapy? We are working to host an Ultimate Six Course here in Hartford on a weekend day in May. Cost for the 8-hour course is $200 ($350 if you don't have the U6 kit which will be used in the class). Please email Steph if you are interested. |

Unlike other professional athletes, these women, have full time jobs and have to pay for their own equipment and travel. They play the sport because they love it. Watching their clip reels, you can see their dedication and talent. Sometimes I forgot that I wasn't watching an NFL highlight film. The NightMare is based in Windsor, but they will play their games in the 20,000 seat Dillon Stadium in Hartford. Their home opener is Saturday, April 24 against the Philadelphia Liberty Belles. But you can meet (and run with!) the NightMare during our Fun Run on March 14. To help raise money for the team, we will be raffling off a pair of season tickets and other great prizes.
