Winston Churchill Quote When Stephanie asked me to guest-edit this week's Extra Mile newsletter, I spent a few weeks unsure of what to write, turning various ideas over in my head and discarding them. During last week's freezing rain and this past weekend's cool breezes, I spent each run trying to find a moment that would be worth writing about (and worth your time reading). And while those runs were full of conversation with running buddies and satisfaction at overcoming some truly miserable weather, no hill or final mile stood out from those in countless other runs.

This past week, I talked with one of the participants in our No Boundaries program who will be running her first 5k at the O'Hartford run in a few weeks. She talked about how excited she was to complete her first 5k after all the progress she made over the past months of training. This is a frequent conversation topic with No Boundaries participants, and so while I was excited for her, I did not think much of it after she left the store.

A few nights later, I was flipping through a scrapbook of old photos and race numbers from when I ran cross-country and track at Conard High School. What I found on the very first page was a photo that I had forgotten: myself at fourteen, a red and gray singlet a size too large drooping off my shoulders, nervous and excited on the starting line of one of my first 5k races ever. Looking at that picture, my mind snapped back to the No Boundaries participant as I realized that she had that exact same look of nervous excitement for her first 5k as I did for mine twelve years ago.

Whether you are training to run or walk your first 5k, complete your first half or full marathon, try track workouts for the first time, or embark on a program of health and fitness, everyone has the opportunity this year to experience that nervous excitement of starting something new and unknown.

Schuyler's Shoe Review
Schuyler With a few tweaks here and there, Saucony has spent the past few years improving the Guide series to the point where it now competes toe-to-toe (or is that heel-to-toe?) with stability stalwarts like the Asics GT-2150 and Mizuno Inspire. Originally called the Trigon Guide, it was part of the Trigon series that also featured the Trigon Ride, which many runners now know as the perennially popular Ride. The new Guide 3 breaks form the mold in that it is no longer just the Ride with a medial post; its fit is designed for the needs of moderate stability runners.

W's Guide 3Like the Ride, the Guide has a curved fit with a relatively high arch. Its moderate medial post provides stability for moderate pronation along with a substantial midfoot torsion system to keep the shoe rigid where it needs to be rigid and flexible where it needs to flex.

The few changes to the shoe make it a great shoe for a wider variety of feet than past versions. The upper features well-positioned mesh in the forefoot so that bunions will be free from irritation and rubbing. On the cushioning side, Saucony increased the SRC forefoot cushioning pad, providing a more plush forefoot than previous versions.  For many M's Guide 3runners and walkers this shoe is already an old favorite, but anyone with a moderately pronated gait can try the comfort and performance of the Pro/Grid Guide 3.

Now in the Store:
Thorlo ExperiaNew Experia Colors:  The popular Thorlo Experia sock enters its second year with new colors like orchid, hibiscus and white.  Incorporating a cushy Thorlo pad at the heel and forefoot but a thin Coolmax mesh the rest of the way around, these socks are great for cushion without the bulk

Saucony:  As Transition Topwe move into Spring, Saucony has a few tops to take us there in comfort.  The men's Transition Half-Zip is an ultra-thin, waffle-textured top that can be used as either a base layer in cooler weather or a single layer when it's just a little too cold for short sleeves.  The women's Micro Melange V-Neck tee is a slightly warmer short-sleeve tee that can be worn with arm-warmers for a variety of conditions.
