Keep. On. Going...
Winston Churchill QuoteSometimes running can be effortless.  Your feet feel like they hardly touch the ground, and you never get out of breath.  You felt like you can go on for miles.  Then, there are other times when it feels like you are running in wet concrete with only half a lung working at capacity.  One mile feels like ten.  Last Tuesday was one of those runs.

My friend and I got off to a good start (i.e. we both arrived at the trailhead on-time).  Instead of taking one of our usual trails, we decided to be adventurous and follow a side-trail that we had never taken before.  We figured that it would be a flat-ish run along the bottom of the ridge.  Wrong.

It was an uneven, roller-coaster trail overgrown with dormant sticker bushes that kept catching on our clothes and scraping us.  Neither of us could find a good rhythm and there were none of the incredible views we usually enjoy on this run to distract us.  The trail didn't even go anywhere.  It just abruptly ended so we had to go back the way we came.  It was not enjoyable in the least.

We hoped that our ritual post-run trip to Dunkin Donuts would salvage the run and put us in a better mood, but even that didn't help since we went to a different location where the people watching wasn't as fun nor the flatbread sandwiches as tasty.  Everything just seemed out-of-sync.  The "this is so hard" funk continued during a run with my sister on Wednesday.  I felt like I was out-of-shape and hadn't run for weeks.  So frustrating!

After taking Thursday off, I woke up on Friday dreading the thought of going for a run.  Before I could convince myself to go back to bed, I put on my favorite fleece-lined tights and top and bolted out the door.  I told myself to just take it easy and work on finding my rhythm again.  It didn't matter how slow I went.  But, when I reached the first mile, I was shocked by my quick time - and I didn't even feel winded.  I let out a loud whoop of happiness, and let that elusive Runner's High propel me to a new personal record on that course.

It was a good reminder that we all need to just keep on going - even when it seems like we're going backwards.  Eventually, our toughness and perseverance will be rewarded.

Be Fit!

Schuyler's Shoe Review
SchuylerNike LunarGlide+: While Nike has relied on Air cushioning for two decades now, you may have seen that they have a new cutting-edge cushioning technology called Lunar Foam. This change is part of an industry-wide trend away from cushioning units like encapsulated air, which can be bulky and only positioned in key parts of the shoe, and towards cushioning materials which can cushion more evenly with less bulk. We saw this in last week's review of DNA, Brooks' successor to HydroFlow encapsulated gel, and saw it a few years ago with Saucony's successful shift from Grid units to ProGrid foam.

Nike LunarGlide+ for MenLunar Foam might be incredibly cushioned and durable, but the new LunarGlide incorporates an innovative stability system as well. Traditionally, moderate stability shoes have incorporated a denser foam "medial post" to prevent uneven breakdown from pronation. The only problem with medial posting is that it is a rather blunt system: you're either off it or you're on, depending on where you are in your gait cycle. Nike has incorporated a Dynamic Support System in the LunarGlide, so that the entire midsole is made up of a denser and firmer Lunar Foam, arranged diagonally so that there is gradually more dense foam towards the inside of the shoe. This arrangement provides the same moderate stability with a gentler feel.

Nike LunarGlide+ for WomenThe men's and women's versions of the shoe are gender-specific. Women get a slightly greater heel bevel to match the Q-angle of a woman's hips, and an arch-wrap provides greater midfoot security. Both the men's and women's versions are a great fit for bunions with a mesh cut-out to prevent rubbing and discomfort. The shoe's new technology is only matched by its great looks. Featuring bold colors with a hint (or sometimes more than a hint) of neon, the shoe truly looks like it is from the moon.
Now in the Store:
Running SkirtsRunning Skirts:  These skirts are flattering and fun!  Instead of the standard boy short, they have a regular brief so you can wear them over tights or capris.  In addition to a basic black, we brought in a green plaid (perfect for Saint Patrick's Day) and a "TNT" purple plaid.  And according to this video, these skirts are not just for women anymore!  It seems that they are attracting a following of men who find them comfortable to wear during endurance events.

Adidas Half Zip for MenAdidas Short Sleeve Tee for WomenAdidas:  Adidas is known for their sharp-looking running apparel at great prices - like the colorful, lightweight half-zips for men and women that costs just $38.  They work great as an outer layer now and can be worn alone once it warms up a bit giving you almost three seasons of wear.  There are also coordinating shorts and short-sleeve tops for those looking to spice up their gym wardrobe and a sleek black jacket for men that converts easily into a vest.  If you are like me, there is no better motivation to exercise than getting to wear new gear!

New Socks from Sock Guy

Socks:  Without the right socks (i.e. NO COTTON!), your feet can be miserable thanks to the 250,000 sweat glands on the bottom of each foot that can produce up to 8oz of sweat during a one hour workout.   Keep your feet dry and blister free AND make a fashion statement with these popular socks from Sock Guy.  New designs include green turtles, a spilt glass of wine (with "tipsy" written on the bottom of the sock) and a black sheep made of merino wool.  Also, back by popular demand is the wool Sock Monkey sock and the mug of beer!
Featured Race: Give it a Tri 2010
Jocelyn's TriPut your winter training to the test while swimming, biking and running for a great cause.  Give it a TRI 2010 is an indoor triathlon organized by Fleet Feet peep, Jocelyn Pardi.  All proceeds from the event are donated to Jocelyn's newly established charity which helps Connecticut families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The event takes place at New York Sports Club in Blue Back Square and consists of a 15 minute swim, 30 minute bike on a stationary bike and a 30 minute run/walk on a treadmill.  Points are awarded for distance traveled in each leg of the event.  The best part about this triathlon (other than not having to brave the cold!), is that the event runs from 7am Saturday morning through 5pm Sunday afternoon so you can do it when it is convenient for you.

The event is open to all skill levels - especially beginners since it's a safe, supportive and non-intimidating environment.  Cost is $40 for New York Sports Club members and $50 for non-members.  Please register online and choose your start time by 11:59pm on Thursday, February 18.  For more information, click the logo above.

Coaches Wanted!
Cheering Coach! For many of us, there was someone who motivated and support us in our training.  Someone who ran beside us during the good AND bad days.  Someone who was there to give us a hug or a high-five at the finish line.

Now is your chance to be that someone!

We are currently looking for energetic people who want to share their love of running to be an assistant coach and pace group leader for our half marathon and 5k training programs.  Prior experience coaching is helpful, but not necessary.  Desire to help make a fellow runners' journey a positive memory is a must!

Please email Steph if you are interested or want to learn more.  Together we can make a difference one person at a time!.
