THE EXTRA MILE |
Issue #44

Operation Inspire |
Individually, it can be hard to make a real difference. But, when you combine the power of thousands, amazing things happen. Our basement is proof of this. We have a five foot high pile of shoes that extends the entire length of our basement. Over 7,000 pairs of shoes collected for Soles4Souls. All thanks to people like you. I was moved by the efforts of so many who cleaned out their closets and held shoe drives of their own. People like Susan and Kate from South Windsor who collected over 2,500 pairs of shoes and took the time to sort and match them before dropping them off. I was touched by kids like Julia and Amelia who proudly added their shoes to the growing pile, only to pause when they got to their sparkle sneakers. You could sense that they wanted to keep them, but then they thought about how the shoes would make a young girl in Haiti very happy and lovingly put them in the pile. At a cost of $2 per pair, I was also overwhelmed by how I was going to afford to ship the shoes to Soles4Souls in Nashville. Our Bake & FF Gear Sale on Saturday raised nearly $800 (thanks to all who generously donated and to Tara, Carrie and Shirley for baking such wonderful treats) and Mizuno donated another $500 (thank you Colin!). But then Christine Lee from 96.5 FM came into the store to get a new pair of sneakers. She immediately called her co-worker, Gary Craig, who offered to talk about our predicament on their morning show. When they were unable to find someone to donate their shipping services, the Craig & Company morning show stepped-up and offered to cover all of our remaining expenses to drive the shoes to Nashville. WOW! So now, Operation Inspire (named in honor of Mizuno's Wave Inspire shoe and the good that all of these shoes will bring) is a go! This Saturday from 12-4pm, we will be loading all of the shoes into a 22 foot truck which staffer Sean and his friend Randy will drive to Soles4Souls HQ. We welcome your help matching and loading - as well as any shoes you would like to donate since Craig & Company has challenged us to collect 10,000 shoes. With peeps like you, I know we can do it!

Schuyler's Shoe Review |
Pearl Izumi Syncro Fuel: Looking for a shoe that gets you going fast while still providing excellent cushion for those long days? Bearded and multi-socked staffer Duncan Gerity refers to the new men's Pearl Izumi SyncroFuel as a "mainline injection of octane" to his running. This shoe combines fast features, Pearl's trademark cushion and some new little quirks to spice it up. To speed things up, the SyncroFuel weighs in at a sprightly 10.5 ounces, a few ounces lighter than a traditional trainer but not as minimal as a 7-8 ounce pure racing shoe. The forefoot has more "toe-spring," which in non-runner-geek terms means that it is more upturned, allowing a faster, smoother transition when running quickly. Both the forefoot and heel feature Pearl's Skydex cushioning, providing excellent protection with a firm feel of the road. While Pearl Izumi shoes have traditionally featured an open mesh upper with their 360-degree arch wrap, the SyncroFuel wraps the arch further in a 100% eco-friendly recycled polyester midfoot mesh. Because this mesh can be dye-sublimated, the traditional iP logo is sharply multi-colored without requiring any extra weight or stitching like other brands' logo overlays. Because, really, who wants to look traditional when you're in a shoe this fast? |

Bashful Bliss Necklaces: These fun necklaces have arrived just in time for Valentine's Day! Each 1"x1" glass tile is attached to a coordinating 18" ribbon cord that has an adjustable lobster clasp so you get the perfect length. We brought in over 15 different tiles including ones for runners and triathletes (it was too hard to just choose a few!). The best part is that they are only $15! Trigger Point: Trigger Point Technologies was founded by Cassidy Phillips, a highly-trained athlete who suffers from fibromyalgia. Phillips found that trigger point therapy which releases tension and increases blood flow to specific parts of the body, worked best to ease pain, but he found it difficult to work on himself. He began searching for materials that mimicked the pressure and accuracy of a thumb and found one that changes shape after 5-7 seconds which allows it to safely penetrate deep into the muscle when pressure is applied. Using that material and methodology, Phillips created five products: TP Massage Ball, Footballer, Quadballer, Baller Block and The Grid (a mini "foam" roller that is packable and environmentally-friendly). If you want to turn your "Ooooo's" into "Ahhhh's" and improve your range-of-motion, you need to come into the store and give these products a try.
Nike: A fresh shipment of Nike gear for both men and women has arrived to get you through the winter. For the women, we now have a convertible vest/jackets in a super sharp black and bright pink combination that offers great visibility, a butter-soft half-zip in black with a bright pink arm seam and compression shorts. For the men, we have fuzzy fleece half-zips and shorts (for those who workout indoors - or are crazy enough to wear shorts when the temp is in the teens).
Penguin Sport Wash: This product isn't new, but lately we've been getting lots of questions about how to get the stink out of workout gear. The answer is in this orange bottle. For 50 cents a load, your most odiferous clothes will come out smelling...well, smelling like nothing! Penguin Sport Wash is residue-free, non-allergenic, and restores factory-applied waterproofing. You invested in high-quality technical gear, why not spend a few extra pennies per load to help your gear last longer?

Featured Race: Ride America |

This isn't a running event, but it's a great cross-training workout (and it is indoors!). The Connecticut Sports Foundation is hosting Ride America, an indoor cycling event to raise funds to assist local families struggling with cancer. This second annual event will be held at Malibu Fitness in Farmington on Saturday, February 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Riders will combine to bike 6,000 miles in six hours simulating a ride from Connecticut to California and back.
Presented by Farmington Bank, Ride America is open to solo riders and team riders who are challenged to raise $500 as individual riders or $250 as a team member. Bikes will be provided, but participants may bring their own bike or trainer if they like. Proceeds will go to support Connecticut cancer patients and their families through the Connecticut Sport Foundation.
Team riders will take turns cycling during the six hours whereas individual riders can ride as long as they want (several made it all six hours last year). There is no maximum size for a Team (you can have multiple bikes), however, each Team is challenged by having no more than four riders per bike. Each team is encouraged to set their own Team Goal and get creative with their team "uniform". Food and drink will be provided during the six hour event. Plus there are great prizes being given away, and you will have the opportunity to meet Logan Byrnes and Joe Furey who are leading the charity effort for FOX 61's morning team!

Canton HS Wins Spike Week Contest! |
Congratulations to Coach Tim O'Donnell and his indoor track team at Canton High School on winning our Spike Week participation contest in December! It was another close contest with Canton HS just edging out Ellington HS and Northwest Catholic for the team with the highest percentage of the team coming to Fleet Feet Sports. For their reward, the Canton HS team received a season's supply of Gatorade Endurance to keep them hydrated and energized, as well as a visit from Todd Swenson of Saucony who gave away shirts, socks, bags, sweatbands and spikes. |
Upcoming Training Programs |
Celebrate the start of summer (yes, summer!) by running the Iron Horse Half Marathon or 10k on Sunday, June 6. Fleet Feet Sports will be offering a 12-week half marathon training program beginning on March 20 and a 10-week 10K program beginning on April 3.
We will also be starting two more No Boundaries "Couch to 5k" Programs this spring (one starts March 13 and graduates with the Bishops 5k in May and the other starts on April 3 and ends with either the Komen "Race for a Cure" 5k or the Celebrate! West Hartford 5k).
More details will be available in our next newsletter (or you can click on the logo above), so save the date and grab a friend! |
Free Injury Hotline (& Email)! |
Our friends at Select Physical Therapy have set-up a FREE injury hotline to answer your questions about prevention and treatment of common athletic injuries or conditions. You can call or email anytime to ask a licensed athletic trainer (usually my friend Eleni will answer) about your injury. Depending on the severity of your injury, you may be given instructions on how to care for your injury at home or be directed to one of Select Physical Therapy's 30 clinics in CT for a free evaluation.

Team M.A.D. - Now Accepting Applications |
Team M.A.D. (Making A Difference) is a group of Connecticut-based volunteers looking to make a difference in the lives of others. Their goal is to help support local charities by raising money through participation in endurance events like the ING Hartford Marathon. Since 2006, Team M.A.D. has raised over $100,000 for Hartford Charities like the CT Down Syndrome Congress, My Sister's Place and last year's recipient, Saint Francis Hospital Neonatal ICU, where funds were used to purchase a brainwave scanner and other potentially life-saving equipment for sick babies. Team M.A.D. is currently accepting beneficiary applications for 2010. In addition to completing the application at www.goteammad.org, qualified charities need to have the ability to work closely with Team M.A.D. throughout the training and fund raising season, be able to demonstrate a need for funds, and must have a 501(c) 3 status. For more information, go to our web site ( www.goteammad.org) or contact our Selection Committee Coordinator, Laura Hanson, at sc_coordinator@goteammad.org. Applications are due by February 19, 2010. | |
