Sweet Rewards
Mmmmm...Hot Chocolate! This morning I met a friend at the West Hartford Reservoir.  I knew I was in trouble when she put a Gu energy gel in her back pocket and explained that we were going off the beaten path.  We started off on a nice level trail along the base of the Reservoir.  I thought to myself, "this isn't going to be so bad" until we started climbing.  Up, up, up.  Before long the quiet of the woods was filled with my gasping and wheezing.  We passed Kilkenny Rock and continued onward.  With every rolling hill, my legs burned and my stomach cramps got worse.  I remember thinking "this really isn't fun anymore".

But then, the trail ended and we found ourselves on the pavement path that courses around the Reservoir - a path that I have run many times.  Knowing that I would be able to finish the run, a little pep returned to my step.  The endorphins started to kick-in and work their magic.  Almost instantly, I felt better.  I came to the realization that if all runs were easy, then they wouldn't be so enjoyable.  They would start to feel like, well, like monotonous exercise.

My mind drifted to thoughts of why I like to run.  Many times it is for the post-run rewards: enjoying a steaming mug of hot chocolate or Schokinag's Dulche de Leche after a cold run; putting on warm, dry clothes after a run in the rain; or going to work after an early morning run knowing that you have done more that morning than your colleagues will do all day.

I also enjoy running because of the surprises along the way.  The other day, it was being treated to a spectacular view of the Farmington Valley after reaching the top of a particularly long and steep climb at Penwood State Park.  Today, it was seeing a pine tree decked out in colorful ball ornaments in the middle of the trail and running with a friend that made me laugh when I really wanted to cry (it's a good thing she was faster than me and that I didn't know where I was going or else I would have taken a short-cut and missed the fun).

Running in the dark and cold of winter is tough, but remember that the tougher the run, the sweeter the reward.

Be Fit!

Schuyler's Shoe Review
SchuylerTrack Spikes: Indoor trackmeans a lot of things, from cold, snowy runs to twelve-hour meets. One thing that goes with the territory, is whipping around the track like a centrifuge in lightning-fast track spikes. We are carrying our largest assortment ever this year, including jumping spikes (here in a few weeks) and some truly unique spikes unlike anything you've ever seen.

Saucony CresentFor those just starting out in track & field, our assortment of entry-level spikes offers a variety of options at great prices without sacrificing quality. The Adidas SprintStar and Saucony Crescent will fit the beginning sprinter, while the Adidas Arriba and Saucony Velocity will be all the freshman distance runner needs. For those in between or doing some jumping events, try a mid-distance spike like the Adidas Spider and New Balance 507.

Elite-level spikes, such as the AdiZero line from Adidas, the Saucony Endorphin and the Brooks Z3 come in at a lower weight than entry-level spikes. Typically they weigh in at under five ounces, so feather-light that you'll feel barefoot. Additionally, the spike-plates (the piece which holds the spike in and gets you up onto your toes faster) extends farther back in the shoe to help you outkick the competition.

Nike's Max Cat IIIn addition to our standard spike line-up, we've added the Nike MaxCat, one of the lightest 55m-400m shoes on the market. The flexible upper is form-fitting without being restrictive, while shark-gill-like venting allows you to intimidate the opposition, or at least think that you are.

For those distance runners who are frequently injured or just want a little more cushion and structure than a traditional distance spike provides, Adidas cooked up something special in the new AdiZero Cadence. The shoe was designed for multiple world-record holder Haile Gebrsleassie, who has a history of Achilles injuries. Building from a road racing flat, the shoe provides more cushion and stability than any other spike on the market.

For runners just starting out or those looking to trade a fraction of an ounce for a fraction of a second, this year's spike line-up just might be one of the best ever.

P.S.  Our Indoor Track Spike Night is this Wednesday from 7-9pm.  Find your perfect spike, get a discount and some sweet gifts too!
Now in the Store:
What is the perfect stocking stuffer for a runner?  Socks!  We've got some great new ones to keep your runner's toes warm and sweat-free this holiday season.

Fun Socks from Sock Guy

Holiday Socks:  Get into the holiday spirit with these cute socks from Sock Guy that are designed specifically for runners and cyclists.  We've got Santa rockin' out, snowflakes, snowmen and my favorite, the classic sock monkey.

Balega's Lesedi SockBalega Lesedi Socks:  In our opinion, Balega makes the best technical sock on the market - deliciously soft, highly durable and wicks away sweat to help keep your feet blister-free.  They are a real treat for your feet.

Buying Balega also supports the Lesedi Project - a joint partnership between Balega and Fleet Feet Sports to help handicapped children at the Ethembeni School in the Kwa-Zulu Natal region of South Africa.  This year, we're proud to offer a special limited-edition Balega Sock that includes a beaded bracelet made by the children.  Plus, $2 from every sock is donated to the Lesedi Project.  Last year, the proceeds were used to buy a bus for the school.  This year we're raising money to build them a therapeutic playground.

Injinji Toe Socks

Injinji Socks:
The patented Injinji Performance Toesock helps prevent blisters between your toes and better aligns the bones of the foot for better posture and smoothness of movement.  The socks are also great if you wear the Vibram Five Finger "shoes".

Just in are the fun stripped socks made with an eco-friendly Coolmax yarn made from recycled plastic bottles and post-industrial waste, the ultra-fine Merino wool socks that keep your feet warm in winter and cool in summer and the brand new Yoga Toe Sock featuring a non-slip bottom and eco-friendly yarn that is recommended by both podiatrists and yoga instructors.

Beginner Marathon Training Program
Vermont City Marathon logoWant to run a marathon but afraid to go it alone?  Fleet Feet Coach, Lisa Greenwood, is hosting a FREE "support group" for first time marathoners who want to do the Vermont City Marathon in Burlington VT on Sunday, May 30th.

Lisa has put together a training program designed for beginning marathoners for everyone to follow.  The plan is to run four days per week, cross-train one and rest two.  Each Sunday, the members of the group will take turns hosting the weekend long run which means choosing the location of the run and mapping out the course so everyone knows where to go.  Your first long run together will be 8 miles and average pace of the group is 10:30/mile.

To learn more information, email Lisa or check out the program's web site by clicking here.  You can also meet the group at the "Meet and Greet" run this Sunday (December 13) at Noon in Simsbury.  Of course, the run will end at Starbucks...
