Believe In Yourself

Carrie Tollefson - photo by Victah SailerLast week I went to Dallas for a conference.  In addition to morning runs in balmy 32F weather, I had the opportunity to eat dinner with Carrie Tollefson, a U.S. Olympian and 3-time national champion in middle distance events.  Like most professional runners, she was as nice as can be.  Easy to talk to, funny, enjoys a good piece of lasagna (but not the vegetables accompanying it) and is very inspirational.

She told us the story of the greatest race in her life: qualifying for the 2004 Olympics.  Up until 2004, Carrie was best known for her prowess in the 3k and 5k both on the track and cross-country.  She was expected to win the 5k during the Olympic Trials in 2004, but had an off-day and finished 6th.  She thought that her Olympic dreams were toast.

Instead of admitting defeat, she decided she was going to persevere and not give up in the 1,500m; a race no one thought she could place in, let alone win.  Even the sportscasters on the pre-race show didn't mention her name as a contender.  But Carrie ran with all of her heart.  Early on, she got out front - a position for which she had no plan since she didn't expect to be there.  Her strategy became "hang on for dear life".  Hang on she did, crossing the finish line first, securing her spot on the Olympic Team going to Athens.

Carrie said that she learned so much about herself and life that day.  She learned to believe in herself, especially in tough times.  She learned that there are no limits.  You just need to keep running.  Keep moving forward.  We are all going to have bad days.  But a bad day doesn't mean you are a failure.  You just get up the next day and keep trying your best.  Always believe in yourself.

There is something powerful about the word "believe".  The impossible happens nearly every day because someone believed something could be done.  You can do anything you set your mind to.  It may take months (even years) and a lot of hard work, but you can do it.

Our nearly 60 No Boundaries participants prove this every Saturday.  Despite the frigid temperatures, they show-up at the store every Saturday morning to run.  First they ran a mile, then 1.5 miles and now 2 miles.  They are becoming runners.  And it all started because they believed in themselves.

Live Fit,
Steph

PS  My other favorite part about meeting Carrie: she wants to be a meteorologist when she retires from running!

Schuyler's Shoe Review

SchuylerSaucony Grid Stabil CS:
January brought an enormous number of shoe updates, including many huge ones like the New Balance PL-1 last and the gender-specific fit of Mizuno shoes.  No change has been more drastic, however, than the Saucony Stabil.

Because the Stabil was not on a standard one-year product cycle, it was last in line for an upgrade from Grid to Pro/Grid cushioning technology.  With this change, the new Pro/Grid Stabil CS is a sleek, plush motion control shoe where the old Grid Stabil was considered by some to be a little clunky and stiff.  Additionally, the upgraded upper is much softer and more spacious, offering more accommodation for bunions and high-volume feet, as well as fitting a wide range of orthotics more readily.  Although it was a long time coming, this shoe is a great treat for severe pronators who love a comfortable shoe.

Saucony Grid Stabil CSSteph's Note: After wearing New Balance shoes for over 15 years, my mom reluctantly agreed to try the Saucony Stabil CS I brought home for her one day last month.  She was pleasantly surprised by the mix of plushy cushioning and solid stability, as well as its nice styling.  One of her favorite features is the super comfy insole that absorbs lots of shock with each heel strike and puts a spring into her step which means happy hips and feet - even after a long walk at the Reservoir.  As Mom told me the other day, "This shoe is a keeper!"
Now in Store...

CW-X Compression SockCW-X Compression Support Socks:  We are thrilled to be one of the first stores nationwide to carry CW-X's newest product.  These seamless, variable compression socks are made with Torex , a special four-way stretch fabric that can increase circulation in the feet and lower legs, resulting in reduced fatigue and faster recovery after strenuous activity.  The socks feature CW-X's patented webbing which supports the calf muscles, ankle joint and arch of the foot, as well as a cushioned sole and toe.  These socks are not just for athletes either - diabetics, expectant moms, frequent fliers and anyone who experiences aching legs after a long day on their feet can benefit from these socks.

CW-X 3/4 Stabilyx Tights for MenCW-X ¾ Stabilyx Tights for Men - You read right, we are now carrying "capris" for men!  ¾ tights have long been popular in Europe and have been slowly gaining popularity here in the US because they are perfect to wear on chilly mornings when a tight is too much and shorts too little.  They also work great under ski pants so you don't have too much bulk in your ski boot.  This tight has the added benefit of CW-X's patented Conditioning Web design that supports the lower back/core area, hamstrings, IT Band and knee joint - the areas that carry much of the load during running, skiing and snowboarding - so you can stay on the move longer!

Women's Mean Green Nike Tempo ShortsMen's Nike 1/2 TopNike Tops & Shorts:  The first of our spring apparel from Nike has arrived to brighten up the store.  Pieces include the super popular Tempo shorts for women and Fundamental shorts for men, along with a soft, warm (but not heavy) half-zip top for men and women that is perfect for layering or wearing to the gym.  Colors include navy, white and "mean green" (peppy enough to scare away the winter blahs).
Schuyler's Book Review

Jack Daniels DVDIn order to ensure that Fleet Feet is your one-stop shop for all of your running and fitness needs, we have recently added a wide selection of books and DVDs on a variety of topics including training, nutrition, and injury-prevention.  Among the many books available on training, Dr. Jack Daniels' Daniels Running Formula has been a mainstay of coaches and athletes since it was first published in 1998.  Now in its second edition, the book now includes more information on improving marathon performance.  Daniels draws upon over forty years of expertise working with the world's best athletes-he has worked in some capacity with almost every elite American runner from Jim Ryun to Meb Kefleghzi-to explain how exercise physiology can be applied to improve your times.

In late December a few Fleet Feet staffers were lucky enough to attend a day-long coaching seminar with Dr. Daniels.  A condensed version of his coaching and running seminar is available on the Art & Science of Running DVD.  Here, in addition to science, Daniels provides rich anecdotes from the past forty years of American distance running that he has been an integral part of.

Steph's note: In addition to his running talents and shoe knowledge, Schuyler is our resident librarian (he will finish his master's degree in library science later this year).  He has selected a great variety of books for sale at the store for beginning to experienced runners and triathletes and will choose one book to review each newsletter.  If you have a book or DVD suggestion, email him at schuyler@fleetfeethartford.com.
Product Review: Snow Traction Aids
Due North Snow & Ice Traction AidSince I haven't received a customer product review in awhile, I thought that I would share my experience with the snow and ice traction aids we carry from Due North.  I'm a little behind in my training for Boston so I couldn't skip my 10 mile run this Sunday despite the snow.  Ten miles on a treadmill did not sound like fun, so I stretched Due North's Snow Traction Aid over my shoes and took off in the snow.

Not once during the 10 miles did I slip or slide more than a few inches.  The aids worked just as well on patches of icy pavement as it did in several inches of snow.  My stride didn't change nor did I experience any extra pressure on my calves or shin which can happen with other traction devices.  My only complaint was that the slush started to build up in the crevices of my shoe and the aid during the last mile, but this was no worse than the buildup my sister experienced on her shoes earlier on in the run.  Overall I give these traction aids a big thumbs-up!

Kahtoola MICROspikesFor those of you who require a more rugged traction aid for trail, deep snow running or extremely slick surfaces, we will have Katoolah MICROSpikes in stock next week.  These traction aids have wicked spikes on them that will keep you on your feet on even the most slippery surfaces.  Like the traction aids from Due North, they fold into your pocket or car glove box so they are on hand when you need them.  Thanks to Todd for recommending that we carry this product.

Don't forget to email me your product review - a cool "Live Fit" Fleet Feet shirt is your reward!

Upcoming Seminars: Running Injuries & Nutrition
Running Injuries are no fun!
Join Eric Kopp on Wednesday, January 28 at 7:15pm for an open forum on running injuries.  You are invited to participate in a Q/A session with Eric on those injuries that keep you from running and prevent you from improving.  Special topics to be discussed are what it takes to change tissue irritability and flexibility (what it is and why it is necessary).

Eric graduated from University of Connecticut in 1995. He practiced as a traveling physical therapist all over the United States for 4 years before settling in his home state.  He has earned his CSCS from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and was inducted as a full fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Therapists.  He is currently the Regional Clinical Director for ProEx Physical Therapy and serves as a consultant for the Hartford Wanderers Rugby Team.

Better yet, join us for our Wednesday evening fun run at 6:30pm and then stay for Eric's informative talk.

On Tuesday, February 3 at 7:00pm, Coach Al will be back to talk nutrition and teach us how to fuel our engines more effectively for better performance during training and racing.  Coach Al is the creator of Runner Core and a professional coach for several of the nation's top triathletes (and average runners like you and me).

Both seminars take place at the store.  RSVP by calling the store (233-8077) or emailing Sean.
"Run Easier, Run Stronger" Workshop with Coach Al
Coach Al Lyman
Due to popular demand, Coach Al will be offering another "Run Easier, Run Faster" workshop on Sunday, February 15 at 1pm (cost is $49 - a bargain for what you will receive).  This three hour workshop is part presentation and part hands-on.  You will learn the key elements of good running form and technique, how to optimally approach your daily training for improvement, how what is happening throughout your core and legs as you run impacts how you should train and key core stability and flexibility exercises to keep you injury free.

Perhaps the coolest part of this workshop is a full gait analysis by Coach Al.  He will personally analyze your running form and gait using the latest digital video/motion analysis software and will send you a video with his audio and visual analysis within a week of the workshop.  Good stuff!

For more information, check out Coach Al's web site at
To reserve your spot at the worlshop, contact Coach Al at coachal@coach-al.com or 860-912-0818.  Space is limited so that participant one-on-one time is maximized.

Girls Incorporated

Girls Incorporated of Greater Hartford is a wonderful program that inspires girls to be strong, smart and bold.  Their initiatives work to improve math and science education, pregnancy and drug abuse prevention, media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent health, violence prevention, leadership and community action, and sports participation (a big initiative this year is to start a Girls on the Run program in Hartford - yeah!). To accomplish everything they want to do this year, they need your help.

On Wednesday, February 4from 4-6pm, they will be hosting an open house and information session to learn more about the ways you can volunteer your time and talents (men and women are invited).  Light refreshments will be served and you will have the chance to meet and greet with the girls, executive director and Girls Incorporated staff.

For more information, call Girls Incorporated at 860-543-8488.

I received a timely email from Starbucks today asking "Are You In?"  The email went on to say, "What if you gave 5 hours to help your community?  What if we all did?  Your small commitment could add up to something BIG."  Whether it is volunteering for Girls Incorporated, your local school, church, homeless shelter or other organization, I encourage you to give 5 hours this spring.  Let's see how BIG of a change we can make.
